What's the New "Pager" Icon About? (Vanity Request for Help)
Free Republic

Posted on 12/07/2003 4:31:44 AM PST by governsleastgovernsbest

I noticed this morning that a little speaker icon had popped up next to my screen name, and when I let the browser settle on it, the word "pager" appears. When I click on it, it just takes me to my comments, same as clicking on "New Messages."

Could someone please explain this innovation? Thanks.

So... I guess the answer for now is, if the little speaker icon doesn't work.... use this link.... and save a shortcut or bookmark to this:

The google toolbar thing is working for me. I clicked on the popup disabler, and it now allows popups, but only on this site. I've got my little pager window open, and it self-clicks to refresh.

It makes the exact same mail chime as my IE Inbox.

Or you could dump IE and get Mozilla. It has the feature built in to the browser. No additional spyware to add to your system.

Right click somewhere in the window and choose "Create Shortcut" (in IE)

When I open it as my home page, I get 2 windows: the small pager window, and a full-size window that lets me either open a full-size pager window or return to the forum. I click the link on that one that goes to the forum.

I don't get the sound, though...I get little clicks when it refreshes, but that's all. When I first started using it, it chimed, but it doesn't now.

Hmmmm.... I am also using the Google toolbar blocker, and mine will open new windows from links here on FR.

Do you have your browser in general set to allow stuff to open in new windows? - Or when you click links here does it always open in the same window?

It's not working well in Opera 7.23, even with Javascript (not Java as many here have irrelevantly related) enabled. It goes to a redirect page, then quickly - too quickly to manually click on the link - back to the forum.

Thank God! Do NOT consider buying them a set of opposable thumbs. Otherwise, your bathroom privacy would be zilch.

I have a popup blocker running too. The speaker icon didn't work the first time I tried it and then someone mentioned the popup blocker.

With the popup blocker that I'm using, you just hold the "control" key down and then click the speaker icon and it works fine.

Try that and see if it works.

To get the sound, you probably need to enable the sound in your control panel. Scroll down in the comments and you'll see a couple people explaining how to do it. I didn't find "Classic Phone Tool" but did find a "phone" that was unchecked. I checked that and the alert starting working.

I'm using Firebird. I went to my options and set up the popup blocker so that it permitted FR popups. Works fine now.

Actually, I wonder if it isn't in your Free Republic Preferences... How do you have this set? Look under your Name, then Preferences.... Mine is set at the middle option.

Windows
Most browsers are capable of creating new browser windows. You may elect to allow the forum to create new browser windows when clicking marked links. Links which are programmed to open in another browser window will be marked with a ^.
Self Links will not be opened in new browser windows.

Blank Marked links will be opened in a new browser window.

Slave Marked links will be opened in a single "slave" browser window. This allows one to leave open a list of articles in the master window, while reading the articles in a slave window.

Which links don't let you get back to the forum? - just the ones at the bottom of the pager? - or the one that should open up your comments after a notification?

And I am up because there are people here who don't have thumbs that wanted a door opened.

I wrote this for the late great Brian, many years ago, who understood the doorknob principle purrfectly - he would get up on his back paws, put one front paw on each side of the knob, and try desperately to turn it. No traction, though - I always wondered what would have happened if I'd taped a piece of sandpaper around it. Anyhow:

He could open any door
Put a Band-Aid on a sore
If he only had a thumb.

He could play a bass guitar
Write to a movie star
If he only had a thumb.

Shuffling cards, picking flowers
Knitting sweaters by the hour
He could climb the Eiffel Tower
If he only had a thumb.

"It's good there's finally a short cut for it. I always have one window dedicated to the pager."

Same here. I find it somewhat amusing that there are so many FReepers that know nothing of this feature. Perhaps they haven't been issued their secret decoder rings yet. I agree that it is good to have the shortcut. Nevertheless, this should be amusing watching the rest of them trying to figure it out. It pages across all forums again now too. I thought John would NEVER get that fixed.

Ping is sonar jargon.... You can let someone know about an article they might like to read by 'pinging them' to an article.... type their name in and they will see it in their comments. Some people have "ping lists" of people who like to follow particular issues.

"bump" and BTTT (Back to the top) just means someone liked or agreed with the article but had nothing to say about it... So they "bumped it to the top" of the latests comments page by making a reply so that other people would see it.

Actually he hated cars so badly that when we were making that Last Trip to the vet, and he couldn't even stand (post-stroke), he tried to get out of the box. I told him if he could, we wouldn't have to go. It's been four years, and I still miss him every day.

I've wandered way off the topic - I won't be using the notify thing, because I mostly freep at work, but I was reading over Steve's shoulder & saw the "people without thumbs" comment and just had to post Brian's song.

I've never had a problem with it either and I've been using it since it was first added, more than 2 years ago. If you are using pop-up stopper, you have to hold down either the control or the shift key to allow the little window to open, or with pop-up stopper pro you can set it to not stop pop-ups on FR. That way you can open new windows and the pager without having to hold down another key. I love my FReeper Beeper. I think it is one of FR's best features.
