What's the New "Pager" Icon About? (Vanity Request for Help)
Free Republic

Posted on 12/07/2003 4:31:44 AM PST by governsleastgovernsbest

I noticed this morning that a little speaker icon had popped up next to my screen name, and when I let the browser settle on it, the word "pager" appears. When I click on it, it just takes me to my comments, same as clicking on "New Messages."

Could someone please explain this innovation? Thanks.

Did you get a sound when I posted this to you?

Actually, in my limited experience with this stuff, certain applications do not get along when running simultaneously. You may have had something running prior that contributed to the crash.

Good point. Running java apps from different sites is perilous.

I keep the pager open in IE, and do most of my regular surfing with Safari. MLB.com has java on every page, and I go there a lot, so I do it in a different browser than the one on which I'm running the pager.

Once you get it running for you, it's a real time saver, especially if you're posting on multiple threads.

It's not the sound for New Mail Notification; I'm trying to figure out which one it is right now.

All,

Please stop clicking the icon. Everytime someone does it, my garage door opens and my microwave starts.

Thank you.

On my computer, Under Control Panel, Sounds, it's the the "Alarms" sound under "Classic Phone Tools."

Do you have that one?

Mine used to chime, but it doesn't anymore. I think it's broken.

However, it still lights up if I have new posts or mail, so I haven't thrown it away yet.

BTW, mine works fine, but the little "click" from the page refreshing every minute will drive me nuts. I'll have to go digging for the way to disable that.

You get an audible click when it refreshes?

A couple of things I've noticed. Occasionally, I get chimes for no reason. Also, sometimes the default pager page is white with gray borders, and sometimes it's a blue background with my state flag. No rhyme or reason as to when it's one or the other. I've seen both just in the time I've been on this thread. Maybe John knows.

Classic phone tools? I don't know; the coffee isn't ready yet and my eyes aren't reading fine print yet this morning. What are you doing up already anyway? ;-)

It didn't chime when it lit up for your post; it just clicked.

Look under Control Panel, Sounds, and look for Classic Phone Tools; it should be the first one under that category.

And I am up because there are people here who don't have thumbs that wanted a door opened.

I haven't thrown any sounds away....

Do you get the little java box that tells you you have a message, just not the sound, or do you just not get the little box at all?

If you don't get the box, check for popup stoppers; they will smack it down.

I think a lot of people are not actually opening the pager at all from that link because they have something blocking popups.... I use the pager all the time, and I couldn't get it to open from that link because my IE stopped the popup. So it blocked the pager from opening, and reverted to My Comments.

Those of you having trouble..... click this:
http://www.freerepublic.com/perl/notify?spoken=no

and leave that window open... I make it very small in the corner.. when a new post or mail comes in, it should turn blue and make a chiming noise....

The feature is that it automatically refreshes a couple times a minute.... notifying of new replies or mail even if you are up walking around or attempting to get a life....

Yes, but. I followed Hair of the Dog's advice and opened the link, which immediately resulted in a sound. Not sure if I would need to do that to continue to get alerts. Ain't this all confusing?

I make it my home page, and I can get to the forum from there...

But I'm still not getting sounds. Maybe my popup blocker stops them.

Ah, that's interesting. I just tested your theory, and it's true with regard to my Safari browser, which does block popups. I was able to use your other link, and have used the pager with Safari in the past, but for some reason, the link from the pager speaker is blocked. Good catch.

Good! Glad that worked... I saved that as a shortcut on my desktop... and that is how I get to the forum. I leave that window open all the time while I am FReeping or waiting for someone to respond... and get notifications.

I made little screencaps of what folk should see if it is working.... the top is when there isn't anything new... and the bottom is a notification.
