Hillary Clinton- archives, comments, and opposition research
various FR links and stories and posters | 12-07-03 | The Heavy Equipment Guy

Posted on 12/07/2003 3:44:56 PM PST by backhoe

The purpose of this post is to begin providing links, tools, and tactics which we can all use to educate the public, fellow citizens, and neighbors about Hillary Clinton.

It is a work in progress- I have provided a starting point, but want others to chime in with more links, stories, and information.

It is the product of conversations with a number of other members, from which several salient tactical points emerged:

1- keep it as contemporary as possible- the old Whitewater and similar items are stale and dead to the public.
2- keep it civil, please- within the board guidelines, or better. We are trying to convert the mushy middle, and stridency puts them off. Badly.
3- source or reference everything. Authenticity is critical to such an effort.

Here's where it started:

It's identical to her stand on Social Security reform, health care, religion, politics, driver's licenses for illegals, global warming and, when it becomes fashionable again, global cooling. Hillary's for the national interest when those interests coincide with hers, and for Democrats (if it works out that way). First, she's foursquare for Hillary. Her bobbing, weaving, evading and trimming to slide through tiny loopholes that only she would attempt to slip through makes perfect sense.

Tough Enough? ... (...whiny 'feminist' plays the Estrogen Card) -- the “vote for me because I’m a woman” argument is itself sexist. After her disastrous performance during the Democratic presidential debate last week, Clinton adopted the “Loser’s Limp:” pretending to have gone through the entire thing while wounded by those big, mean men running against her and asking  questions.
But she’s in the Big Leagues now...

Video: Hillary: When I’m ‘President Again’ …

November 7, 2007 @ 2:43 pm

Slip of the tongue? Yesterday on CNN’s “The Situation Room” Hillary Clinton spoke about what she would do about licensing illegal immigrants when she is president again. Watch:

Transcript:

I think the fact that governors are being forced into this position is really unfortunate. They should not be making immigration policy. The federal government should be making immigration policy and that’s what I’m going to try to do as president again and I do not believe that in the context of federal immigration reform that that would be an issue that governors would have to contend with.

Bill Clinton Keeps Lying About Max Cleland Ad

November 7th, 2007

You have probably heard by now Mr. Clinton’s defense of his wife’s latest gaffe wherein he referenced “Swift-Boating.”

If not, here is the text, courtesy of the DNC’s Associated Press:

Well let’s look at the ad the Saxby Chambliss camp put out about Max Cleland, courtesy of YouTube:

See if you can find where Mr. Cleland was ever compared to Saddam Hussein or Bin Laden, like Mr. Clinton falsely claimed above, and as he has so often falsely claimed elsewhere.

For instance, here is Mr. Clintion propounding the same lie practically word for word three years ago, via the very prestigious William J. Clinton Foundation’s website:

Under federal "motor voter" law, anyone receiving a driver's license automatically may register to vote.

Nothing but the "honesty" of illegal aliens prevents them from breaking one more law, and voting in American elections.

And Hillary Clinton thinks we should give driver's licenses to illegal aliens.

Hillary's Hard Ceiling, Part II

USA Today reports on its latest Gallup polling that Hillary Clinton's negatives put her in the most precarious position in a general election than any other Democratic candidate. Eighty-five percent of Republicans, a majority of married men, and over a third of all women say they will never vote for the former First Lady, worse negatives than any other major contender running against her. While her strategist attempts to spin those numbers, Democrats may be getting nervous:

More than eight in 10 Republicans and more than half the married men in a new USA TODAY/Gallup Poll say they definitely wouldn't vote for Hillary Rodham Clinton for president.

The poll provides an early snapshot of who's ruling out Clinton, John Edwards and Barack Obama, the three leading candidates for the Democratic nomination.

Clinton, who tops national polls of Democrats, is strongest within her party. Only 10% of Democrats said they'd rule her out; nearly three times as many said they wouldn't vote for Edwards.

The new poll found that Clinton would defeat the leading Republican, Rudy Giuliani, in a hypothetical matchup. Still, some Democrats wonder whether she's potentially unelectable or a drag on candidates lower on the ballot, and rivals such as Edwards say they're better bets.

Mark Penn tried to shine a little positive light on the polling. He claims that Hillary shows gathering strength against Republican contenders, making her the best choice for Democrats. The shifts seem negligible; the head-to-heads have mostly remained in the margin of error, making most of these dead heats anyway. Rudy and Hillary have exchanged leads all year long.

Penn neglects to take something else into account. The head-to-head polling represents a comparison between apples and oranges. People widely expect Hillary to win the Democratic nomination, so her inclusion in these polls show that calculus. The Republican primary is much more unsettled, and some of the polling answers will include a bias among Republicans and independents that reflects the unsettled nature of the contest. That is, people may be inclined by the passions of the campaign to say, "I may as well vote for Hillary if the GOP nominates [fill in the blank]", or be inclined to say they'll support a third-party candidate instead. Once the Republicans nominate an actual candidate, those numbers will change.

Unfortunately for Hillary, those numbers have only one direction to go. She has alienated too many voters over the years to expect a popular resurgence -- and she doesn't have the campaign style to start one, anyway. She lacks the charisma and charm of her husband, and her recent attempt to soften her approach hasn't exactly won converts. If the Republicans find a candidate that can unite the base and still appeal to independents and centrists disaffected with Hillary, the Democrats will lose their opportunity to take the White House away from the Republicans despite the historical trends that point to a win in 2008.

Hillary Minions Spin Latest Waitress Stiffing

November 9th, 2007

In case you haven’t heard, the Hillary “Middle Class Express” stiffed a waitress in Iowa the other day. The incident was first reported by those notorious rightwing conspirators at National Public Radio.

The report has caused such a stir that Hillary’s latest (as of this hour) propaganda site is feverishly trying to spin (read “lie”) their way out of it.

From the hilariously named Fact Hub: Today, NPR reported that when Hillary and the campaign visited a Maid-Rite diner in Iowa, no one left a tip: Both of those claims are false. Here’s the manager of Maid-Rite:

UPDATE: NPR has updated their report. But indeed NPR have updated their report, and it would seem that the Clinton camp are still lying:

Their exegesis on this event is downright hilarious. It boils down to feigned outraged at so much media coverage for such a petty story when there is a war on.

(And of course this isn’t the first time that Hillary has neglected to tip a little person.)   4 Comments »

Clinton Campaign Confirms Planting Town Hall Question, Says It Won’t Happen Again

Friday , November 09, 2007
By Major Garrett

SIOUX CITY, Iowa — Democratic presidential frontrunner Hillary Clinton’s campaign admitted Friday that it planted a global warming question in Newton, Iowa, Tuesday during a town hall meeting to discuss clean energy.

Clinton campaign spokesman Mo Elliethee admitted that the campaign had planted the question

Funny how that works.

Now how will “Fact Hub” and “Media Matters” and her other lickspittle slavey apologists explain this? 5 Comments »

"Do we really want someone who leaves a $100 tip on a $157 meal running our country?"" It reads almost like a sitcom."

Lest We Forget - Hillary’s $100K Cattle Futures

Hillary No Tipper:

Anita Esterday, a waitress at the Maid-Rite in Toledo, Iowa, told NPR’s David Greene in a report that aired on Morning Edition Thursday that “nobody got left a tip” on Oct. 8, when Clinton sat at the lunch counter and ordered up the restaurant’s famous loose-meat sandwich.

No hypocrisy was involved, though, since she supports increasing the minimum wage.

JD, though, adds:

Dan, I read elsewhere that the Clinton group, in this particular instance, had a bill around $50, and left a $100 tip for the entire staff. I think someone shafted this waitress. I dislike Hill as much as the next, but in this instance, she should be criticized for trying to purchase votes, not for not tipping.

So, a 200% tip is pretty generous, I’d say.

MayBee chimes in, and the plot thickens:

The always fabulous clarice at JOM posts this follow up (via NPR)

A Clinton campaign staffer called on Esterday at the restaurant Thursday after the story aired. The staff member apologized to her and gave her a $20 bill, according to Esterday. The Clinton campaign confirmed that visit. The campaign also produced photocopies of receipts showing $157.46 was paid to Maid-Rite on a VISA card on Oct. 8 for meals consumed by the candidate’s entourage. The tip was supposed to have been paid in cash, and the campaign insisted such a payment was made but has declined to make available a staff member who was present at Maid-Rite and left tip money.

Maid-Rite’s manager, Brad Crawford, said Thursday that while he was not present at the restaurant on Oct. 8, he knew that a bill was paid by the campaign that day. He also said that he believed three of six servers working that day received tips from people he thought were working for or affiliated with the Clinton campaign.

Crawford said he didn’t know if campaign staffers meant “for their tips to be distributed to everybody” or whether they were meant only for individual servers.

The manager said he can’t say for sure if Esterday was tipped for serving Clinton and her guests, Christie Vilsack and Ruth Harkin. (Vilsack is the wife of former Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack and Harkin is the wife of Iowa Democratic Sen. Tom Harkin). But Crawford said he believes Esterday’s account that she received no tip.

“Where Hillary was sitting, there was no tip left,” Crawford said.

The restaurant has a lunch counter, where Clinton and her guests were seated. Esterday and several other servers were working behind that counter. There are a dozen or so other booths and tables around the restaurant, and other servers were helping diners seated there.

Esterday, speaking to NPR from home later Thursday, said the Clinton campaign staffer who visited the diner apologized to her and said a $100 tip was left on a credit card the day of Clinton’s visit. Esterday said the staff member said the money was meant to be shared.

“I explained to her that our credit card machine, you know, doesn’t add on the tip,” Esterday said. “And she said, ‘Well, then, they left a $100 bill there.’ And I said, ‘Well, it didn’t get divided up amongst us, because I had gotten nothing.’

“She just said, ‘Well, there was one left,’” Esterday said. “She just kept repeating, ‘There was one left.’

After the campaign staffer stopped at the diner Thursday, Esterday said, the $100 tip was a hot topic.

“Two others that had worked with me that day turned around and said, ‘We didn’t know about any $100 tip,’ because they both turned around and said ‘We didn’t get a part of it.’ And they didn’t. So, it’s like ‘OK, where did it go?’ That’s the mystery question: Where did it go?”

Esterday said it would surprise her if money that was intended to be split among the staff was never shared.

“The ladies that were working that day have been working there for years — some of them for 30 years, some of them for 25 years,” Esterday said. “And I’ve known a lot of these ladies most of my life living here, too. And I can’t imagine them pocketing it.”

(Emphasis supplied.)

Clarice observed:
I can’t believe that it helps Hillary more that her staff is obviously trying to peg Iowa minimum wage earners as thieves rather than accept blame for not having taken care of this properly themselves.

Holy Mother of God.  This is just so Clintonesque.  I mean, who else can make going to lunch such a grotesquerie?

It was reported on Drudge that the Hillary Clinton stiffed a waitress at a lunch stop. There was a quick press release from HRCs campaign claiming that a $100.00 tip was left. On the face of it, it's hard to tell what the truth is. But, the story linked from NPR points up this:

Esterday(the waitress), speaking to NPR from home later Thursday, said the Clinton campaign staffer who visited the diner apologized to her and said a $100 tip was left on a credit card the day of Clinton's visit. Esterday said the staff member said the money was meant to be shared.

"I explained to her that our credit card machine, you know, doesn't add on the tip," Esterday said. "And she said, 'Well, then, they left a $100 bill there.' And I said, 'Well, it didn't get divided up amongst us, because I had gotten nothing.'

"She just said, 'Well, there was one left,'" Esterday said. "She just kept repeating, 'There was one left.'

After the campaign staffer stopped at the diner Thursday, Esterday said, the $100 tip was a hot topic.

"Two others that had worked with me that day turned around and said, 'We didn't know about any $100 tip,' because they both turned around and said 'We didn't get a part of it.' And they didn't. So, it's like 'OK, where did it go?' That's the mystery question: Where did it go?"

Esterday said it would surprise her if money that was intended to be split among the staff was never shared.

"The ladies that were working that day have been working there for years — some of them for 30 years, some of them for 25 years," Esterday said. "And I've known a lot of these ladies most of my life living here, too. And I can't imagine them pocketing it."

The now familiar pattern of pathological dishonesty and inability to deal with criticism is shown in the ever shifting story of the staffer talking with the waitress. First, it was left on the credit card. But, when it is pointed out that they don't allow tips on the credit card bills, the payment is then said to have been cash, but the campaign can't name anyone who actually left the money. Then when the accuracy of this is questioned, the staffer still insists that a tip was left. Unsaid is the presumption that the waitresses are dishonest backstabbers who screwed their colleagues out of their fair share of tip money.

They've even set up a webpage to spin their denial in what seems to be "protesteth too much" moment than an attempt to set the record straight. Is that pathetic or what? Why don't just admit a mistake and correct it?

As Ben Franklin said. " The sting in a rebuke is the truth."

Hillary’s control freak campaign: The politics of planting questions

November 10, 2007 10:20 AM by Michelle Malkin

I think it’s interesting that the Edwards campaign is complaining — Elizabeth Edwards was “outed” by Air America for providing reporters with suggested questions as recently as last month.

And now that we know the real identity of Hillary’s questioner, how can we not be sympathetic? (Hint — scroll to the end)

OOPS: "For the second time in as many days, Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign has had to deal with accusations of planting questions during public appearances . . . . In a telephone interview Saturday, Geoffrey Mitchell, 32, said he was approached by Clinton campaign worker Chris Hayler to ask a question about how she was standing up to President Bush on the question on funding the Iraq war and a troop withdrawal timeline."

UPDATE: Tom Maguire: "The latest Hillarity about planted questions has me wondering what will happen to Hillary after she manages to lose the aura of inevitability."

"Second planted question story. Are her visits to restrooms scripted? I read a story yesterday where she and Obama don't hold press conferences and don't speak to their beat reporters on a daily basis as it used to be. She has been in the public areana since 1991 and she still can't risk an unscripted public encounter."

ANOTHER UPDATE: Heh: "She would have gotten away with it if it weren’t for those darn kids!"

Another plant?-- actually, I feel like an idiot for not having made the connection earlier -- but I first reported this same incident in Politico on April 3: A new New Hampshire poll has Hillary Clinton's lead cut by 11%! hillary's campaign is really coming apart at the seams.

That the story was broken by The Scarlet & Black, the Grinnell College student newspaper, says a lot about today’s journalism.

Not Good, Not Good At All

A Chinese attack submarine surfaced within torpedo range of the USS Kitty Hawk without having been detected by the American screening vessels.

When the U.S. Navy deploys a battle fleet on exercises, it takes the security of its aircraft carriers very seriously indeed.

At least a dozen warships provide a physical guard while the technical wizardry of the world's only military superpower offers an invisible shield to detect and deter any intruders.

That is the theory. Or, rather, was the theory.

American military chiefs have been left dumbstruck by an undetected Chinese submarine popping up at the heart of a recent Pacific exercise and close to the vast U.S.S. Kitty Hawk - a 1,000ft supercarrier with 4,500 personnel on board.

By the time it surfaced the 160ft Song Class diesel-electric attack submarine is understood to have sailed within viable range for launching torpedoes or missiles at the carrier.

According to senior Nato officials the incident caused consternation in the U.S. Navy.

The Americans had no idea China's fast-growing submarine fleet had reached such a level of sophistication, or that it posed such a threat.

One Nato figure said the effect was "as big a shock as the Russians launching Sputnik" - a reference to the Soviet Union's first orbiting satellite in 1957 which marked the start of the space age.

The incident, which took place in the ocean between southern Japan and Taiwan, is a major embarrassment for the Pentagon.

That classifies as a warning to America, Japan and Taiwan all at the same time. It also signifies that we have a problem. This is not as isolated an incident as it might appear. There have been multiple "surprises" in the past year. Some real, some not so much. The problem with the western left's obsession with navel gazing is that it exposes the back of the western neck to people that do not have good intentions. It really is not all about us. Other people have other agendas. Many of those agendas are not peaceful or friendly toward us.

(H/T to Fresh Bilge - who found the Crabitat last night and is now on the blogroll.)

Chinese Navy sub forces getting better, or US Navy getting worse...

Hill-Oh!-Rreah!:

How a Business Flop Became Political Force [Hsu]

Hillary’s Favorite Traveling Companion - Huma

November 11th, 2007

Probably by now you have heard mention of Mrs. Bill Clinton’s now famously mysterious personal assistant, Huma Abedin:

Whatever else the toothsome Ms. Abedin is to Hillary she is certainly her favorite traveling companion, both on the taxpayers’ dime and off.

From the very handy site, Legistorm, we find this about their privately funded trips together:

Click on images to enlarge them.

Note that Ms. Abedin traveled with Hillary more than any other staffer. (38 out of her 40 trips. $65,622 out of her $78,309 total.)

Mind you, those 38 privately funded trips are just what Legistorm happens to have on record. They don’t even touch on the junkets Mrs. Clinton and Ms. Abedin have taken together at the taxpayer’s expense.

A few of these trips are mentioned in passing in “Her Way: The Hopes and Ambitions of Hillary Rodham Clinton,” by the New York Times reporters Jeff Gerth and Don van Natta, Jr., pp 258-9:

The Club

ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT members of Hillary’s staff is Huma Abedin, a young woman who lived in Kalamazoo, Michigan, until she was two and then moved to Saudi Arabia, where she was raised by her Pakistani mother and Indian father.

Abedin is what is known in Senate parlance as a “body person,” someone who helps manage a senator’s hectic schedule and is usually at her side when she travels. “Huma keeps everything going— she’s indispensable,” a former aide said. A Senate colleague of Abedin’s described her as “always reserved a bit, a typical Hillary person, very quiet.”

Now in her early thirties, Abedin joined Hillaryland during Bill Clinton’s presidency and worked her way up to the post of Hillary’s personal assistant inside the White House. In a caption beneath a photo of Abedin in Hillary’s autobiography, she describes Abedin as “extraordinary.”

Abedin’s knowledge of the Middle East and her language skills — she is Muslim and speaks fluent Arabic — even prompted President Clinton to add her to his diplomatic team during the failed peace talks at Camp David in 2000. “She was especially effective at making the Israeli and Palestinian delegates feel at home and at ease,” Bill recalled.

Hillary’s trips to the Middle East as a senator always included Abedin (and a Secret Service detail as well). McCain, who went to Iraq with Hillary in 2005, found Abedin to be “very, very intelligent and knowledgeable about Middle Eastern affairs” and someone with a “very outgoing and pleasant personality.” To Hillary, she is more than that: She is invaluable.

Even when Bill and Hillary escape for a relaxing Caribbean vacation, Abedin is part of their entourage. When Hillary marched up New York City’s Fifth Avenue in the 2006 Columbus Day parade, Abedin was there to hold her flowing, flower-patterned coat. At Hillary’s first public event after announcing her run for president in January 2007, held at a health clinic in midtown Manhattan, Abedin was by her side. At Hillary’s first stop on her presidential campaign, at an auditorium in Des Moines, Iowa, Abedin was again with her, taking pictures for fans and passing along books for autographs.

And since she entered the Senate in January 2001, Hillary and her aide’s foreign travels have included three trips to Iraq and trips to Kuwait, Pakistan, Israel, India, Germany, Ireland, Norway, Singapore, and Estonia.’”

Hillary took one overseas trip in 2005, however, that raised some eyebrows among the handful of people inside the Senate who knew about it. The trip, approved by the chairman of the Armed Services Committee, was to Singapore, where the International Olympics Committee was preparing to choose the host city for the 2012 Olympics. New York City was one of five finalists but wound up losing to London.

Hillary initially taped a video on behalf of the Big Apple’s pitch, having planned to skip the meeting. Then, at the last minute, her plans changed; she decided to join city officials and lobby in person. Her aides quickly tried to figure out how to use public funds to pay her way, but they learned that only a Senate committee could authorize the use of public money for foreign travel.

There was another problem. Senate rules stipulated that “the primary purpose of a trip must of course be official in nature to justify the use of official funds.” Even Hillary’s spokeswoman acknowledged that she was “doing it for New York,” not the federal government or Congress. Making it even harder was the fact that the Democrats controlled no committees at the time because they were the minority party in Congress.

Senate committee chairpersons, though, have considerable latitude in determining what is “official,” and Hillary had a friend in Republican senator John Warner, the patrician Virginian who was then the chairman of the Armed Services panel. Proving that the value of personal relationships cannot be underestimated in the Senate, Warner approved the trip as official business. Hillary took along Abedin, and was also accompanied by the usual Secret Service detail. The Armed Services Committee report on the trip, required by law and signed by Warner, was filed with the Senate after the normal reporting period and went unnoticed by the public.

Hillary and Abedin’s two-day stay in Singapore cost taxpayers more than $14,000, most of it airfare.

We will leave it to others to speculate as to why Ms. Abedin is such an invaluable companion. (Though it should be noted that she started with Mrs. Clinton more than eleven years ago as a mere intern.)

But it is perhaps amusing to note what significance the name “Huma” has in mythology, via Wikipedia:

Image:Huma bird of paradise.jpgHuma

The Huma, also known as the “bird of paradise,” is a Persian mythological bird, similar to the Egyptian phoenix, which consumes itself in fire every few hundred years, only to rise anew from the ashes. It is considered to be a compassionate bird. The touch of the huma bird is said to bring great fortune.

The huma joins both the male and female natures together in one body, each sharing a wing and a leg. It avoids killing for food, rather preferring to feed on carrion. The Persians teach that great blessings come to that person on whom the huma’s shadow falls.

According to Sufi master Inayat Khan, “The word huma in the Persian language stands for a fabulous bird. There is a belief that if the huma bird sits for a moment on someone’s head it is a sign that he will become a king. Its true meaning is that when a person’s thoughts so evolve that they break all limitation, then he becomes as a king. It is the limitation of language that it can only describe the Most High as something like a king.”

Perhaps Mrs. Clinton is just superstitious.

Bill Now Says ‘Hillary-Care’ Was All His Fault

November 10th, 2007

From the Hillary machine’s favorite mouthpiece, the New York Times:

Bill Clinton Says His Wife Took the Rap on Health Care

By JEFF ZELENY

November 9, 2007

ALBIA, Iowa, Nov. 8 — Former President Bill Clinton said Thursday that he should receive more blame than his wife for the failed attempt to revamp the nation’s health care system more than a decade ago.

“You know how much she cares about this,” Mr. Clinton told an audience in Glenwood, Iowa, according to an account on MSNBC. “She has taken the rap for some of the problems we had with health care the last time that were far more my fault than hers.” …

As he campaigned here Thursday, Senator Barack Obama of Illinois said Mrs. Clinton could not claim credit for trying to overhaul health care if she did not accept any of the blame.

“All I know is that part of the record she’s running on is having worked on health care,” he said, “so it’s kind of hard to gauge if one of her claims is to have experience in this issue to then suggest that somehow she doesn’t have anything to do with the fact that it didn’t work.” …

We noted this new tactic the first time it was floated back in September.

And we ask the same question we asked then again now. If Hillary didn’t handle Healthcare, what on earth has she ever run — besides her mouth?

Oh,yeah, she also managed Bill’s bimbo eruptions. Even to the point of illegally eavesdropping on private telephone calls.

But when you think of it, wasn’t that an even more spectacular failure?

But sure, she will be a highly competent President of the United States.

After all, she has watched her husband do it.

Huma Abedin & Hillary Clinton - Abedin Family Ties to Al-Qaeda--but waaaaaayy too complicated for this housewife to make heads or tails of

In 1977, Huma Abedin was 2 years old.

Her father was an un-tenured academic, at Western Michigan University, with a newly minted PhD from the University of Pennsylvania, and was desperately in need of funding to establish his career.

He turned to the Saudi Arabian money man, Abdullah Omar Naseef, who would remain his benefactor and his confidant for the remainder of his life.

Huma Abedin's mother is BFF with the Saudi Arabian's wife, Fatima Umar Naseef, the radical feminist Wahhabi scholar, to the point that Huma Abedin's mother has translated & published her works in English.

Huma Abedin's brother has also been the beneficiary of the Saudi Arabian's largesse, in the form of a fellowship at the University of Oxford.

Finally, the Saudi Arabian in question, Abdullah Omar Naseef, is Defendant #97 in the World Trade Center lawsuit, and has figured prominently in testimony about terrorist financing before both the US House of Representatives and the US Senate.

Have The Wheels Come Off For Hillary?

For a candidate whom everyone expected to march confidently to her party's nomination, Hillary Clinton has begun stumbling and cannot seem to right herself. First came a disaster of an answer at the last presidential debate, and the breathtaking attack on Tim Russert for having the temerity to question her about an immigration issue in her home state. Next came the revelations of question planting at campaign events. Now Drudge reports that the Clinton campaign warned Wolf Blitzer not to get tough in this week's debate, or else:

CNN's Wolf Blitzer has been warned not to focus Thursday's Dem debate on Hillary. 'This campaign is about issues, not on who we can bring down and destroy,' top Clinton insider explains. 'Blitzer should not go down to the levels of character attack and pull 'a Russert.'' Blitzer is set to moderate debate from Vegas, with questions also being posed by Suzanne Malveaux...

The Clinton team has forgotten the First Rule of Holes: stop digging. No one except the most ardent of the netroots bought the explanation that Tim Russert was a right-wing plant at MS-NBC. If the Clintons expect that anyone will believe them when they hang the same jacket on Blitzer, they're not just mistaken, they're delusional.

Today, CNN also notes that the explanation given for the Grinnell University incident doesn't quite wash, either:

Gallo-Chasanoff, whose story was first reported in the campus newspaper, said what happened was really pretty simple: She says a senior Clinton staffer asked if she'd like to ask the senator a question after an energy speech the Democratic presidential hopeful gave in Newton, Iowa, on November 6.

"I sort of thought about it, and I said 'Yeah, can I ask how her energy plan compares to the other candidates' energy plans?'" Gallo-Chasanoff said Monday night.

"'I don't think that's a good idea," the staffer said, according to Gallo-Chasanoff, "because I don't know how familiar she is with their plans."

He then opened a binder to a page that, according to Gallo-Chasanoff, had about eight questions on it.

"The top one was planned specifically for a college student," she added. " It said 'college student' in brackets and then the question."

It wasn't just an overeager staffer who improvised the planted question out of excess zeal. The student noted at least seven other prepared questions, along with the profile of questioner they wanted with each question. That indicates a lot more preparation and thought than the Clinton response acknowledged. It looks like question-planting has its own process and procedure, indicating a more extensive use of it than first thought.

Gallo-Chasanoff says that she informed the campaign as a courtesy of her interview with the press. The Clinton team responded by urging her to keep silent, or to check with a campaign staffer if she had any more contact with the press. She refused to do so, wondering why the Clintons would have any problem with her speaking the truth about what happened.

A good question, indeed. Why did the Clinton campaign want her to keep quiet? A better question is why the campaign feels the need to exercise such tight control over Hillary Clinton. Is she such a bad candidate on the stump that they have to fake questions and attempt to intimidate and vilify national news reporters in order to keep people from discovering it?

Apparently they think so. And if they think she's that bad, imagine how bad she really is.

UPDATE: Jim Geraghty's on the same wavelength, noting that the threat to Blitzer isn't quite as dire as the Clinton team might imagine it.

UPDATE II: Jonah says he doesn't get how asking about an honest-to-goodness issue amounts to a "character attack". What Jonah doesn't understand is that Hillary's answer, and subsequent whining and lashing out, revealed a lot about her character than the campaign desired. We're getting close to a meltdown now.

UPDATE III: Even Chris Bowers of Open Left is "spooked", and he should be. His points about the Armstrong Williams fiasco, fake news programs, and the FEMA press conference are also well taken in this context.

UPDATE IV and BUMP: Welcome, RCP readers! How bad has this scandal become? Even The Nation has joined the chorus...

Queen Hillary's disruptive court--Everybody is afraid to tell Hillary! she is wrong. So every time the campaign makes a mistake, they are in for two weeks of tail chasing, because by definition, Hillary! is always right.

Clinton Says No to Licenses for Illegals--She was for it before she was against it. My gawd ... has this woman no shame? Does she think we are as STUPID as she is?
Isn't this her third different position?
