Gang Attacks Train of Migrants in Mexico
TUXTLA GUTIERREZ, Mexico (AP) - Gang members attacked illegal immigrants from Central America on a train in southern Mexico, killing three people and wounding four in the latest in a series of violent incidents in the region, an official said Wednesday.
Witnesses said about 25 members of the Salvatrucha gang used guns and machetes in the attack Tuesday in Tuzantan, state Public Safety Secretary Horacio Schoeder said.
Police arrested 10 suspects and were searching for the others, Schoeder said.
In the past year, gangs have killed more than 70 people in the region, a transit point for immigrants from Guatemala and elsewhere who are trying to reach northern and central Mexico or the United States.
The Salvatrucha is one of the most violent gangs in the region. In less than a month, the gang has killed more than 20 people in a series of violent attacks on migrants. A man was hacked to death by machete-bearing gang members last week in a separate attack on the same train carrying about 500 illegal migrants, authorities and migrant witnesses said.
A dozen people were wounded in that attack, which involved more than three dozen gang members.
The migrants are vulnerable targets for gangs because they are usually carrying enough money to last them through the entire trip.
Maybe this will slow down illegals but I doubt it.
