December 15, 2003 -- A 22-year-old transvestite was in critical condition yesterday after he hacked off his penis, then lied and told cops he was the victim of a hate crime. The man, who was not identified because of the nature of the crime, was in critical condition yesterday after doctors at Harlem Hospital Center were unsuccessful in reattaching his penis. Police said the man initially claimed it was a berserk gypsy cab driver who had severed his penis in a fit of rage.

He did it because he wants hormone therapy and gender reassignment surgery to make him as close to a woman as a biomale can be. The surgery is, I believe ,very expensive.I've read that it's become increasingly rare at legitimate medical centers in the USA (I think it was Mayo that ceased performing them altogether, for example, and that's partly why we've read so many cases here lately of "quacks" who've perfornmed cut rate "sex change operations" out of their homes).I doubt too many insurers cover it unless it's being performed on a person gender dysmorphic from birth, and not someone who wants it for psychological reasons. His idea was, he'd cut off a hated part of his body, blame an evil stranger, and be given the surgery he wants out of compassion, probably funded by money sent in from people outraged at this "hate crime" from all over the country. Didn't work....But if he truly believes he's a man trapped in a woman's body, he probably does not mourn the loss of his penis. I wonder what will happen to him : If he can't get the hormone therapy and artificially constructed vagina (which BTW is formed from the patient's amputated penis...This guy may have rendered himself permanently unable to be a candidate for the surgery he wants )will they try to construct an artificial phallus for him, which is what is done for men who lose their external genitalia in accidents, war, etc? Would he refuse it if offered, even if I'm right that he can no longer be "made into a woman",and they so tell him?

What crime would that be?  The false reporting of a hate crime has no history of withholding the name of the perp.  The 'nature of the crime' seems more likely to apply to the self-performed johnsonectomy....and yet, is removing one's own appendage criminal?  Iniquitous minds want to know.
