I know the saga of the sharecropper's son. I was born a coal miner's daughter. No that was Loretta Lynn. I had a good job but woke up one morning and said, "Gee, I'd like to join the Air Force". I'm serious.

The little guy is A.J. Anderson, who is 5. The pic shows him wiping his eyes in front of a fence hung with yellow ribbons during a March 26 ceremony at Fort Story, Va., in support of troops deployed overseas for Operation Iraqi Freedom. His father, Lt. Col. Brian Anderson, commands of the 11th Transportation Battalion, which earlier deployed to Kuwait from Fort Story.

Great! Good idea to add the CIA, since they have many agents serving in the field in both Afghanistan and Iraq. God bless and keep them all.

Another terrific poem. You couldn't possibly be a "hog" when paying tribute to our guys and gals. Maybe some of them will get to read this thread. Heartfelt tributes like yours mean a lot.

Great pics; thank you. The fourth one down in the Marines section is an Air Force Pararescueman.

Pretty cool--graphix intensive.

It looks like the Army does a lot more hugging than the other branches...

That photo came from the Marine Times Photos of Valor site. Although I'm ex-Navy, my service was some time ago. I did not recognize the insignia. But it's OK. Whatever branch of service, they all deserve to be honored.

:-)

Actually, there are lots of photos on the Army, Navy, Marines, and Air Force Times "Faces of Honor" pages. If it looks like the Army does more hugging, blame me for choosing those pics to post instead of others.

I was in the army (Nat Guard now). I don't blame you--I blame all the Consideration of Others courses promoted by "Hillary's favorite general".

You, on the other hand, did a great job on this thread.

Being a Viet Nam Era (that means stateside) Vet, I am sensitive to the need to be supported by the public. The majority of the public supported us but they were silent. I will not be silent about how much I owe our troops.

Those people who say "I support the troops but not the effort in Iraq or Afghanistan or George Bush", are walking the fence. How can I support you, but not support what you do?

OK soapbox away. two more.

Veterans Day

Our country called, they answered,
They risked their lives, their all.
They fought on land, sea, and air,
They saw their buddies fall.
Yet on they fought and they prevailed,
We owe our gratitude.
So give thumbs up, to them, the Vets,
God grant them solitude.
We can’t repay all that they gave,
So show them that you care.
They fought for us, to all be free,
Be thankful they were there.

Thanksgiving 2003

As we sit in our dining rooms,
And give our thanks to Him.
Let’s say a prayer, for those abroad,
Our troops, remember them.
They fight for us and we must know,
They’d like to be home too.
To see their families and their friends,
And eat some turkey too.
So bow your head and say a prayer,
That home they soon will be.
God keep them safe, and guide their paths,
They fight to keep us free.

Pinging the Dose prayer/scripture ping list, though it is by no means a comprehensive list of FReepers who have family members in the military.

What an awesome set of pictures of an awesome group of people ... the US military! God bless them all!

Here's some 7th Cavalry officers working on their battle plan:

Here members of Delta Company, 3rd Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) go room to room, clearing the local Baath Party headquarters in Kifl, Iraq, March 30. The soldiers found documents, weapons and full grain bags hidden inside the walled compound.

Here an M1A1 Abrams tank from the 3rd Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment, rumbles north through the Iraqi desert April 1. The cavalry and the rest of the 3rd Infantry Division, making a push north, moved within 80 kilometers of Baghdad.
