CNN is reporting that the dhow was carrying fifty-four 70 pound bags of hashish (I missed the street value), and that the crew members were IDed as al Qaeda members.

U.S. Seizes Boat With Links to al-Qaida

Email this Story

Dec 19, 11:14 AM (ET)

By MATT KELLEY

WASHINGTON (AP) - The U.S. Navy has seized a boat in the Persian Gulf carrying two tons of hashish and four people tied to the al-Qaida terrorist network, the military said Friday.

The guided missile destroyer USS Decatur intercepted the boat on Monday, U.S. Central Command said in a statement. On board were two tons of drugs worth an estimated $8 million to $10 million and 12 people, four of whom have suspected ties to al-Qaida, the statement said.

The boat, a wooden vessel known as a dhow, was near the Straits of Hormuz, the narrow part of the gulf between Iran and Oman, the statement said. The area is a known smuggling route used by Osama bin Laden's terrorist network, the statement said.

American forces searching the boat found 54 70-pound bags of hashish, the statement said. The investigation which followed found clear ties between the drugs and al-Qaida, the military said.

The Decatur is part of a U.S. Navy force including the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise.

CNN's take on the story (www.cnn.com):

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The U.S. Navy has intercepted a small vessel loaded with drugs in the Persian Gulf and seized 12 crew members, three of whom have "clear ties" to the al Qaeda terrorist group, Pentagon officials said Friday.

The boarding took place Monday just inside the Strait of Hormuz by a team from the USS Decatur, a guided missile destroyer on patrol in the Persian Gulf.

Found on board the 40-foot dhow, officials said, were 54 bags of hashish weighing 70 pounds each. The drugs would have a street value of between $8 million and $10 million, officials said.

No shots were fired during the boarding and seizure of the crew and the contraband, they said.

U.S. military officials would not describe the evidence leading them to conclude the links to al Qaeda. A written statement said only: "An initial investigation uncovered clear ties between the smuggling operation and al Qaeda."

The Golden Crescent has been financing the Taliban, al Qaeda, BCCI, Pakistan nukes, and the whole sordid Islamist mess for a very long time.

And in Iran as well. One of the Shah's daughters died from a heroin overdose, another was a known heroin dealer (I don't think ever prosecuted).

Drug dealing is in the background of the entire Middle Eastern problem.

And Fox News has learned that
the U.S. military recently
rounded up several Al Qaeda
(search) operatives trying to
enter Iraq.

In Friday's Baghdad raid, nine
cell members, including the
guerrilla leader, were arrested at
dawn. The gang leader was
responsible for coordinating
three different cells, according to
Lt. Col. Garry Bishop of the 1st
Armored Division (search).

The raid was based on a tip from
an informant and resulted in the
capture of rockets, anti-tank
missiles, explosives, timing
devices and six 100-pound
barrels of fertilizer.

It's thought there were enough
weapons and ammunition to
launch an attack comparable to
the October homicidetruck-bomb attack on the Red
Cross.

"The suspected attack time was
tomorrow [Saturday] night,"
Bishop told Fox News. "The
information we received, we
believe, is a fallout from
information gleaned from the
capture of Saddam, which
identified certain cell leaders
throughout the Baghdad area.

"..street value of $8 to $10 Million..."

Where? New York? Certainly not Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, or anywhere this 40 foot vessel could make it to.

That amount of hash wouldn't be worth very much in that part of the world. What "officials" come up with these numbers...ex-Enron accountants?

Steal the valuables

the verb steal should only be used in the third person. In the first person you should use the verb liberate or procure.

Nice pic, motorized dhows are prevalent in the coastal trade in the Arabian Sea, Red Sea, and along the East African coast--exactly what was used to move people & stuff from Yemen to Somalia in 93--hopefully something which is today being monitored & as necessary interdicted by our guys in Djibouti.

Be interesting to find out why they picked out this particular boat to search.
