WASHINGTON - The son of former vice president and 2000 Democratic presidential candidate Al Gore has been charged with marijuana possession.
Albert A. Gore III, 21, was arrested Friday night after he was stopped for driving a vehicle without its headlights on.
Two passengers were also arrested and charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession. They were identified as Yann V. Kumin, 21, and Marc G. Hordon, 22, both of Cambridge, Mass.
A Montgomery County, Md., police officer stopped the car, a dark-colored Cadillac, in Bethesda, a Washington suburb, around 11:30 p.m. Friday.
The officer noticed the car's windows and sunroof were open, despite cold temperatures Friday night. There was also a smell of marijuana coming from the vehicle, according to a news release from the police department.
A search of the vehicle turned up a partial marijuana cigarette, a cigarette box containing suspected marijuana, and a soft drink can that also smelled of marijuana.
All three were released pending trial.

Please see the link above - the story does indeed mention Al Gore III's other arrests for DUI and speeding at 97mph in a 55mph zone.

Washington Post refused to run story on 13 year old Albert III's prep school pot bust in 1996. Al turns on Clinton and the Washington post turns on Al.

Al III was busted for smoking pot with a friend at his prep school in 1996. His smoking buddy was expelled. Al III got a slap on the wrist.

I actually heard it on the local all-news radio station first, which is amazing in and of itself. I would imagine that many news outlets will give more "airplay" to this story since it was published in the Washington comPost.
To: Grim
I wonder if he got the munchies while being booked at the police station. I'm also wondering just how they got home from the police station, since they were released pending trial.
They're gonna blame this on an 'addiction gene'.

The fact that this story even broke this quickly and was covered by mainstream press in this country is somewhat of a "miracle", considering the media's past track record.
Media in Gore Jr. DUI Bust Cover-Up - Sept. 14, 2002
Excerpt
In August 2000, the then-Harvard bound high school senior was nabbed for speeding on a North Carolina highway - news the media held for days so as not to embarrass his father, who was in the midst of being nominated for president at the Democratic convention in Los Angeles at the time.
At the family's request, the press also declined to report young Gore's 1996 suspension from the tony Washington, D.C., prep school St. Albans after he was discovered smoking marijuana in the cafeteria.
"[Vice President] Gore called leading news organizations around Washington and asked them not to run the story, and all complied," reported Newsweek's Bill Turque in his book "Inventing Al Gore."

Al Gore is a waste of breath IMHO.
But just as I thought it ugly and unrelated to his political life and actions when Jeb Bush's adult daughter was busted for drugs, I will also not bash Gore for the actions of his son.
I have a child.
I do not think the actions of ones adult children should be held against the parent.
That smacks of maliciousness, IMHO.
Al Gore himself provides plenty of self induced targets for derision, without bringing the failings of his adult progeny into the mix.
I hope you have very few bumps on this thread.
I hope we are better than that.

I agree. A few jokes are OK, though...
To: sarasmom
On one level, I agree with you. On the other hand, the fact that this story broke in this fashion is amazing, considering the previous "cover-ups". Al Gore III is clearly in need of an intervention, especially considering he's been a user since the age of 13 (or maybe earlier......).
Maybe by this story going more public, maybe that will happen.
To: isitjustme
Al Gore III has broken the law many times. His arrest sheet is getting longer. And he's been "toking" since the age of 13. This guy needs help.
To: isitjustme
One other point, he was DUI and driving without headlights on. Would you like to have been in a head-on collision with him? This act made him a menace to society.
To: Grim
Gore is a goof- wanna jump and go BOO!!

I'm just goofin' around a little on a Sat night ;) .....But in all seriousness, it does appear that Junior needs a good talking to. I sympathize with his plight of being the son of such a train-wreck of a dad (I might be getting blasted everyday too if I were in his position), and I wish him the best. If he's just smoking pot he'll probably grow out of it on his own (like most do), but if he's doing other (harder) drugs then perhaps an intervention is necessary.
