An important detail is arrival time since al-Queda carefully times their attack. IE: If the flights were leaving now they would be on the east coast aroung 8:00 PM.

I wonder if the French concerns had anything to do with a request from the American Embassy...msnbc was saying that state and the white house had been in touch earlier today with the french govt concerning being more vigilant.

I wonder if the French concerns had anything to do with a request from the American Embassy... I bet I know how that conversation went: Listen France, might as well keep those planes on the ground because we aren't going to let them into US airspace.
One of the 747s was scheduled to land at LAX at 4pm pacific time. Someone do the math and see if it was in the air yet, or still on the ground.
(Well, actually, we don't know when the flights were canceled...)
