I agree, but it makes me sad that they have no 'pride'. I guess that is instilled in your upbringing!

Two points:
1. Poll Test - if you can't demonstrate a basic compehension of what is being voted on you can't vote.
2. The reason only property owners could vote in the earlier period of America's history was that those without property will happily tax those with property.

Remember the joke about four wolves and a sheep voting on what's for dinner?

These folks have no clue that THEY are the ones who have to handle the trials of owning a home.

The 'neighborhood plunger' was a pretty good indication of that.

I've worked with lower income people, accustomed to having the government always involved in their lives (food stamps, Section 8, the criminal justice system, etc.). They are truly at a loss when they have to depend on themselves, even when it comes to the normal trials of life that we handle on our own.

They should never have built all those Habitat homes in one place. It has already been shown that if you put all those poor families together, the whole place will just be dragged down. The success of Habitat had been that the poor families were place in lower to middle class family areas and had some models to follow as far as upkeep, etc. are concerened. If everyone is as poor as everyone else, where is the motivation to do better, to take care of the place? This is just Cabrini Green on a small scale!

Your story reminds me of something that happened to my mother, years ago.

She had a student who was always poorly dressed, even in a classroom of poor kids. She gathered a box of our old clothes to give to her. Well, the kid lived in the projects and my mother was a bit afraid (and this is a black woman at a black project) to go in by herself and asked the girl to have her father come down and get the box.

Dad comes down in a full length fur!!!

a very un pc cartoon was posted on the bulletin board of the sales room where i used to work back in the 70's...all us salesmen were commission only.

the cartoon was of a guy wearing a big sombrero riding on a donkey...the caption read: "to get on your feet, you must first get off your ass"

for some reason that has always stuck with me.

Ya, If the guy had stayed outside and let the kid shoot him, he wouldn't have pellet holes in his house and why don't they just tell the drug dealers to leave?

Liberals feel GREAT about it because giving money to scum creates and keeps liberal voters.

No,

I disagree, Jimmy Carter is not whittling on the front porch with a tear from Marilyn.

That is the answer, yep, it's the peanut farmers from Georgia.

The Carters left them with everything.........

Well, sort of.

I just plain do not believe in section 8.

OTOH, as a landlord, it is very profitable for me, even though I would never take a section 8 renter. Section 8 tenants keep market rents high.

Another example of the law of unintended consequences. The government takes money from the middle class and gives it to the "poor". At least a politically correct segment of the "poor".

The "poor" now compete with the middle class for desirable rentals, driving up the cost of living for the middle class. They get taxed twice and don't even know it...

Guy Camara said that didn't happen: "Habitat basically walked away after the houses were built."

If there is crime in the neighborhood, then stop bitching and start a neighborhood crime watch. Or get a good police chief who starts enforcing the law.

Habitat for humanity merely repairs and builds houses. It isn't a nanny who then holds your hand forever.

I still don't understand why this guy expected Habitat to be around to supervise. They do counseling and instruction BEFORE people move in, in order to make sure they understand about mortgage payments, maintenance, etc.

As far as I know, that is all they have ever done.

You are quite right. They should start a crime watch and work together on neighborhood problems.

It has already been shown that if you put all those poor families together, the whole place will just be dragged down

Sociologists blamed most of that on the DESIGN of the tenements, saying that the place is dragged down because there are too many common areas that no one feels responsible for, and the people don't feel invested in the area and so they don't care about it. Maybe they will eventually realize, after spending many years trying different approaches, that it's the people that make the ghetto. My parents grew up in Los Angeles, and I have pictures to prove how nice their areas were. They are ghettos now...disgusting. It's a different class of person that lives there now.

Correction: The people don't act low class. They are low class.
Alright, I admit it. I was being kind. And there ARE a few who still act with dignity.

In Memphis, the paper did expose on HRH homes. It seems there have been several recipients who have obtained home equity loans and then couldn't pay back loans. Many have lost their homes.
