Gary, Ind., leads in per capita homicides

GARY, Ind. (AP) — This northern Indiana city appeared to finish 2003 with the nation's highest per capita homicide rate for the ninth straight year, according to police statistics.

Police in Gary, population 103,000, investigated 69 suspicious deaths, 68 of which have been classified as homicides. That total was about 10 percent higher than the 62 in 2002, but down substantially from the 132 people killed in 1995, the Post-Tribune of Merrillville reported Friday.

Based on information from police in major U.S. cities, Gary was poised again to post the highest per capita homicide rate for cities with population of more than 100,000, the newspaper reported.

Chicago, Gary's larger neighbor, finished 2003 with 599 homicides, the highest unofficial total among major U.S. cities.

Police said many of the violence in Gary is done by Chicago residents who move their homes or drug operations to the nearby Indiana city.

"As Chicago tears down its high-rise public housing buildings, many of those people are moving here," said Police Chief Garnett Watson.

Pittsburgh had tied its homicide record with 118 as of 12-30-03. Here I thought the 'burgh was going to win one for a change but Gary prevailed.

Once a boom steel town. Now a busted shell. Who thinks of Gary now without also thinking "way hard up"?

Although the mills have been busted, I believe that the city administration hopes that the casinos will breathe new life into this rat-hole.

Casino's haven't helped yet. Gary needs a lot more help than what those Casino's offer. Gary needs a complete makeover.

Yep just as Prohibition gave us gang wars the WOD is doing the same thing

Over 60% of gun associated murder victims are themselves criminals

So the WOD victim statistics are used to take away our gun rights

WOD causes more dam harm than any possible good

"More fallout from the second prohibition?"

That's a joke, right?
What about the several dozen other cities in the U.S., also subject to this so-called "second prohibition" that have much lower murder rates?

Maybe they're just lucky? Or maybe your drug-induced theory is just an hallucination?

It's not a joke, but the following will explain to you why no answer is forthcoming to YOU. It has been cut and pasted from my profile page. Goodbye.

I'm interested in ideas and concepts, not the personalities of posters. Flame wars and personal attacks have become tedious. I have made the mistake in the past of returning fire. Therefore, once a commentary becomes personal I will cut and paste this message and exit the conversation in search of intelligent discourse.

LOL! When I asked a simple question I didn't expect a detailed answer! Thanks so much. As I suspected, it's a largely poor black city, with the majority of the population living in female-headed households or alone.
