Why People Fear Guns

People fear guns. Yet, while guns make it easier for bad things to happen, they also make it easier for people to protect themselves.

With the avalanche of horrific news stories about guns over the years, it's no wonder people find it hard to believe that, according to surveys (one I conducted for 2002 for my book, "The Bias Against Guns," and three earlier academic surveys by different researchers published in such journals as the Journal of Criminal Justice) there are about two million defensive gun uses (search) each year; guns are used defensively four times more frequently than they are to commit crimes.

Exactly. The few gun control nuts I've met don't get it when I tell them as a child (12), my friends and I would have BB gun fights, actually shooting each other. We'd each take turns defending a hill in the neighborhood. But on those days we'd sneak the 22's and shotguns out of the house, we were smart enough not to turn those on each other. But we sure killed a lot of empty bottles!

Every year, Treasury puts out a report on the top 10 guns used in crime, and each report serves as the basis for dozens of news stories. But why not also provide a report--at least once--on the top 10 guns used defensively? Similarly, numerous government reports estimate the cost of injuries from guns, but none measures the number of injuries prevented when guns are used defensively.

If Tyranny and Oppression come to this land, it will be in the guise of fighting a foreign enemy." -- James Madison Gen. Franks Doubts Constitution Will Survive WMD Attack

R.J. Rummel made the following comment in a speech given to the ABA National Security Conference on "The Rule of Law in United States Foreign Policy and the New World Order. Washington, D.C., October 10-11, 1991:

Today, we can extend the idea of peace through democracy to cover freedom from government genocide and mass murder. But to do so requires overcoming incredible mass ignorance even about the megamurders for which authoritarian and totalitarian governments have been responsible. Of course, everyone knows about the Nazi genocide.

Elsewhere on his website,Freedom Virtually Ends Genocide And Mass Murder he states:

By shooting, drowning, burying alive, stabbing, torture, beating, suffocation, starvation, exposure, poison, crushing, and other countless ways that lives can be wiped out, governments have killed unarmed and helpless The Revolutionary Second Amendmentpeople. Intentionally. With forethought. This is murder. It is democide.
...democide is a government's murder of people for whatever reason; genocide is the murder of people because of their race, ethnicity, religion, nationality, or language.
Part of this reluctance to call a government or its ruler a murderer comes from the fact that to do so is a new and strange thought. Democide is a black hole in our textbooks, college teaching, and social science research. Few people know the extent to which governments murder people.
Note that at the workers' level, this was not an act of massacre by the uneducated, undisciplined masses, ordinary folk easily misled and aroused. As with the Holocaust, when Nazi killing squads were often led and composed of Ph.Ds and other professionals, the claims of the powerful and authoritative easily swayed the well educated to murder. In the Great Genocide, Hutu lawyers, teachers, professors, medical doctors, journalists, and other professionals, made their contribution to the methodical annihilation of the Tutsi or defiant Hutu.
What connects all these cases of democide is this: as a government's power is more unrestrained, as its power reaches into all the corners of culture and society, the more likely it is to kill its own citizens. As a governing elite has the power to do whatever it wants, whether to satisfy its most personal wishes, or to pursue what it believes is right and true, it may do so whatever the cost in lives. Here, power is the necessary condition for mass murder. Once an elite has full authority, other causes and conditions can operate to bring about the immediate genocide, terrorism, massacres, or whatever killing the members of an elite feel is warranted.

Fear may be justifiable if you are looking into the barrel of a weapon that is being held by someone with malevolent intentions.

Great article. Thanks for the post. Do you know where I could find this article at another website besides fox? I'd like to forward it along to some liberal/socialist folks I know but if they see its from FoxNews.Com they'll chuck it into the circular file without even reading it. They thing Fox is the most biased news source on the planet (they've had too much brainwashing by the liberal machine and CNN).

Well lets think about this...

They are going to be pointing the gun at you no matter what right?

Would you rather have a gun on you or not?

Thats your choice. Having that gun on you doesn't increase your chance of being mugged or robbed.

actually shooting each other

Im doing that now with my son, only using airsoft guns. Its a little unfair though, as my son has a fully automatic gas Ingram-80 (I think) and I still have to manually cock after each shot.

He is aslo very well trained with the real thing, btw.

From the Bureau of Justice Statistics on Violent Crime:

Not sure if a weapon used: 6%
Total Non-firearm: 17%
Total Firearm (from Saturday Night Special to Atomic Cannon) = 9%
NO WEAPON USED = 68%

Where is the concern by the media for the 68%?

God commanded us to "Love our neighbors as ourselves"

When one's neighbor is being attacked, robbed, beaten, raped ...it is love of one's neighbor that should provoke a decent person to try to save that neighbor

To go after thugs armed only with only good intentions is foolishness...you need a gun...the willingness and practiced skill to use it rightly

A person with family has the responsibility to protect that family...in this day and age it simply isn't possibly without a firearm..adequate training and practice

Criminals will always find illegal ways to get weapons including firearms and use them against their victims..its what they do

Making crime illegal hasn't stopped one single crime during from being committed...but firearms in the right hands...have stopped many...

Waiting for an armed police response to a 911 call....may not only just 'seem' like an eternity...

People fear guns becauwse they are from other cultures. Even as late as the early '50s, ninety percent of the population owned guns. America had only recently been an agricultural economy and there were relatively few immigrants. Then, with the influx of people from other countries and other cultures beginning in 1965, the percentage of the population owning guns was reduced. Of course they had no gun ownership - they all came from communist or defacto communist countries like Mexico, where guns are not allowed.

Hoplophobia?
1: a persistent, abnormal, and unwarranted fear of firearms , despite the understanding by the phobic individual and reassurance by others that there is no danger.
2: a strong fear of, dislike of, or aversion to firearms.

>>...Why People Fear Guns...<<

Based upon conversations with friends and co-workers over the years, I believe some people are afraid that if they have a gun they will somehow "lose thier mind" and kill themselves or their family with it.

Mine too. That's when we will have to resort to shorter barreled rifles and silencers. Shoot, shovel and shutup will be standard policy.

If you are going to die anyway, you might just as well fight. Guns are not magic wands. It is quite common for a person to not only survive a gunshot wound, but to be able to fire back or run away after being shot.

People fear guns.

An armed society is a polite society.

Fear that a gun will harm you makes as much sense as fear that a pencil will misspell a word.

These days a great number of people have been brainwashed into the delusion that self-defense is somehow immoral, and that only the government has the authority to protect them.

We can see that in the UK, and the same thing is occurring here.

There exists a law, not written down anywhere, but inborn in our hearts; a law which comes to us not by training or custom or reading; a law which has come to us not from theory but from practice, not by instruction but by natural intuition. I refer to the law which lays it down that, if our lives are endangered by plots or violence or armed robbers or enemies, any and every method of protecting ourselves is morally right.

I have often thought the same. Those libs who doubt if they can control themselves in a moment of passion/anger/whatever, shouldn't have guns. Unfortunately, they think we are all like them, or they think we are worse and more unstable.

I have met several looney lefties (including in my extended family) and I am glad they support gun control. Those freaks shouldn't be allowed to look at any weapons.... I know I don't let them near mine ;-)
