A heck of a read. I skimmed through a lot of it.
The author does point out some mechanisms of popular behavior unsavory as they are. Burn him at the stake as a witch anyway. Best not to take chances. :)

I know what you mean about "forbidden" thoughts -- it seems quite a lot of thoughts and posts are forbidden right here on FreeRepublic. FR used to stand for freedom, but now it's apparently run by a bunch of statists.

I think I'll wait for the Reader's Digest version of this article.

I find it interesting that lately on FR, there are a lot of threads related to todays political correctness, propaganda and the correlation to the methods used by, among others, the Nazis.
Seems that history, although updated, repeats it'self. You would think that we would learn. (sigh)

Howdy Eala! I almost stopped reading here:
We often like to think of World War II as a triumph of freedom over totalitarianism. We conveniently forget that the Soviet Union was also one of the winners.
Graham has an incredibly annoying habit of offering up these airy vacuities as if they're received truths. His "we" here doesn't include anyone over the mental age of 12 and certainly it doesn't apply to him or he wouldn't have brought the matter up. This rhetorical "we" is sloppy, inaccurate, and insulting.
I'm not entirely sure what this rather lengthy exposition was even about. If it refers to the eternal tension between convention and unorthodoxy, then great, but then this sort of argument in favor of unorthodoxy has by now assumed an orthodoxy all its own. This is the sort of non-conformism that values the difference of the idea more than the validity of the idea. In point of fact, Gallileo does not equate to the kook who insists the earth is flat despite the fact that both of them share the characteristic of standing against conventional wisdom. There's a good deal more to it than that.
As for what is archly termed "moral fashion," I'm at a bit of a loss to decide what in human endeavor is less subject to the dictates of fashion than morality. Certain aspects of it tend to wax and wane over time - an insistence on untrammeled freedom in sexual mores, for example - but I am personally dubious as to whether there is, in fact, any significant change in the underlying verities. In fact, I'll go so far as to suggest that these are among the longest-lived and least changing of all of human intellectual effort, else we should hardly be consulting the Bible, the Qur'an, or the Sutras for guidance in the matter. They've certainly outlived terracentric cosmology.
I don't know, perhaps it's just the author's breezy and presumptuous inclusion that rubs my fur the wrong way. I'll get over it, I guess...

There are lots of things I can't say here without getting banned, so I just think them VERY LOUD.

FR used to stand for freedom, but now it's apparently run by a bunch of statists. FR is owned and run by a private individual who doesn't want garbage on his website.
You are always free to start your own website, and put up with any trash you want to.

Some goofballs see Nazis behind every bush, especially if they can't fire up a dube anytime and anywhere they want to.
