[history]
Chris Loarie has waged a battle against the boarders, inventing something he calls skatestoppers (search) — metal brackets that serve as mini speed bumps and can render almost any surface unskateable.
"We've got customers that have, just here in San Diego, spent upwards of twenty, twenty-five thousand dollars replacing broken granite simply because of skating and biking," said Loarie, whose business Intellicept sells the product.

I was going to post a photo here, but apparently the manufacturers have yet to discover JPEG file compression. LOL.

Like, Yaah! Way dude. Way cool. Now if someone could just make some gnarly-fuzzy big tires to roll over those things, that would be so totally bitchin'.

Great Idea! Necessity is the mother of invention and that is the American way.
I looked a the link, and the skatestoppers are pretty neat. Now, I will know what I am looking at, whenever I see some. :-)

Each year millions of skateboarders, roller bladers, and bikers take to the streets in search of the best places to skate and ride. Even with the rapid growth of skate park facilities nationally, your property has become a practice ground for disruptive and destructive activity.
Shown here are custom bronze bars that are inserted and grouted into saw cuts in the granite substrate.
Shown here are standard parts affixed to bench edges.

My idea would probably been more along the line of those tire puncturing things they put in drive in theaters to prevent people driving in the exits.
Truthfully though, I had no idea skateboarders caused such damage. This is a nice product, but it's a shame that property owners have to go to this expense because of the lack of respect the skateboarders have for the property.

If skaters would just respect private property, there wouldn't be any problems. They damage property and have no respect for the property owners and managers.
I used to be the manager of a business that had a long curb local skaters liked to use. My only request was that they couldn't use it during business hours.
Finally, after (politely) asking a couple of kids to leave and receiving another "F--- Off A--hole," I called the cops and had them escorted off the property. Then I asked the cops to ticket anyone skating on the property at any time.
They lost another place to skate because of their own behavior.

you have some serious problems with skaters man!!
i am a skater myself, but personally i think this stuff is a good idea, hell i know my friends and i were really annoying when we were younger (am now 19) because we did deface property. This is all that people have been waiting for , its sensible and a good buisness idea, you know perhaps you could even think about putting some of the large profits you must be making towards sponsership for area's that dont have skate parks.
you arn't taking away a skaters right, your just leaving them with less opportunity.
Show the skater community that your not out to attack them by putting something back into it! if they dont like it, then thats their problem, if you put money towards a skatepark near me i would be more than happy to skate on it!

Defnintely! If you live in a house with grass nearby, I can use your property as a backstop or target for driving golf balls. That's my sport, and my right. You have no rights as a property owner, so suck it up, fix your windows, and give me back my golf balls if they land in your living room. </sarcasm>
To: Moppith
Shouldn't it be the skaters' responsibility to raise funds for a skate park? When the local high school band wants to take a trip to Washington D.C., they hold car washes, or they perform some kind of civic activity to collect donations. Wouldn't the same type of effort generate public support for a skate park?

Terrific idea! Our sons' school is only 3 years old, and we're experiencing a lot of skateboarder damage. It's expensive and very irritating to have our nice new facilities being damaged. I'll bring this new product to the attention of our school administration tomorrow!

Shouldn't it be the skaters' responsibility to raise funds for a skate park? Skate parks attract vandals, drug users, gang-bangers and other assorted pukes.
Most communities that install skate parks remove them within months. Can't say I blame them.

And even when they don't draw unsavory types the insurance bankrupts them quickly. When the sole purpose of your facility is to let people risk their fool kneck your liability profile is astronomical.

Well, he doesn't "deface" private property. And, he uses the local skate parks when they are open. Funny, our little parks don't seem to have attracted the druggies...yet. Hope they don't. As my son said, if you're a skater you can't smoke or do drugs. It makes you a lousy skater! Like that attitude.
Mmmm, so only skate parks attract the dregs, huh? Funny, we used to have more problems at the ball field, under the bleachers etc. Just a comment. As you can see, my son is a skateboarder and he knows he cannot just go anywhere that looks good. It is a responsibility issue. I am hoping our town will get a skatepark sometime so we don't have to go elsewhere.
The indoor parks are great, just far and few between. Guess where we are going for his birthday?? And, they are required to wear helmets and pads there.
OK, enough from a skatemom(NOT a soccer mom!).

"You give conservatives a bad name."
You forget this priceless quote from the object of your reply: "And we cut 65 degree angles at all smoothe locations where anyone thought a skate fag would try to surf... We drew blood in 24 hours!!!!!"
(Then again, it's probably OK, as those skate fags are probably all liberals. Right?)
To: lonewacko_dot_com
lol, funny you said that! baggyboy is my skateboarding ,Ted Nugent listening, conservative, proud to have seen Pres. Bush in person, kid!
Just a note too, that the skaters here do ask permission to skate at some of the businesses and they do follow the rules set up by the owners. A lot of skaters are good kids doing what they love to do.
Wonder what these folks do if someone playing football/baseball/frisbee/soccer lands the ball/disc in the middle of and destroys their prize rose bushes?

Heck you're too easy, my sport is large bore pistol shooting.
The house walls make a great target support. They can keep the bullets.

"You must be a regular socialist.
1. You defaced property and are not sorry for it.
2. You infer profits are bad.
3. You feel we owe you something.
4. You just signed up tonight."
1. I never said i wasn't sorry for it, infact i am sorry that i did that as i understand the responsibility of my actions.
2. I never infered that profits are bad, i was making a genuine suggestion that the guy puts some of his money towards a skate park!
3. Did i ask for anything? i dont feel i am owed anything!
4. Does it matter when i signed up, you all had to sign up at some point!
as for raising funds, someone said "school bands do car washes to they can go in trips to D.C"
hmmm, so a trip that may cost a few thousand compared to the cost of 10's of thousands, running into 100'000+ to build a decent OUTDOOR skatepark, as far as indoor ones are concerened the cost way more! and no i aint making these facts up my friends and i have looked into this before we were given estimates!
and where did i find this, dear lord man, does it matter, i thought this was free republic, what right do you have prying into my matters?

The little nylon parts that skatestoppers.com sells has saved our business complex a bunch of headaches. We tried to get the skaters to not skate during business hours, they wouldn't stop. We had some ticketed, and to our (un)amazement, we suddenly had vandalized windows.
We finally bit the bullet and installed the nylon stops along the curbs and the skater problem vanished overnight.
Great idea, highly recommended, and I wish it wasn't needed.

Nice idea (I think), but the company making these things AND the business who installed them is going to lose their shirt when pedestrians start tripping over them and breaking stuff.
