Court: N.C. must broaden its Medicaid coverage for illegal immigrants

RALEIGH (AP) — North Carolina must broaden its Medicaid coverage for illegal immigrants to allow for longer-term treatment of serious health problems, the state Court of Appeals ruled Tuesday.

The ruling could expand the kinds of medical treatment that illegal immigrants receive under the Medicaid program. For hospitals that are already treating illegal immigrants, the decision could also mean more Medicaid reimbursements.

My doctors office..Two Mexican men, one woman, one baby. No one speaks english, they cannot fill out questionaire. No money, no insurance and 'NO UNNERSTAN". Nurse gives up, takes baby in to doctor. No payment, nothing, doctor just forgets about it. They walk out, baby has medicine. This was in NC. Illegals are supposed to be thrown out of the country.

Sounds like NC is becoming the California of the East Coast. Who cares what the state government or the voters want - liberal judges have the final say. Maybe Howard Dean will carry NC if this attitude exists in beautiful NC. Chapel Hill seems to have infected the state's judicial system.

I find it insulting that, in this day of terror alerts and terrorism threats, American citizens (legals) are held under more scrutiny than an illegal. Illegal aliens have -- in many cases -- more benefits than do legal citizens. Presient Bush is making a serious mistake by granting amnesty to these people. And he is doing it purely out of political motivation. This country's priorities are completely hosed. You have to wake up, America.

IMO, Bush has messed in the nest with this proposed Amnesty.

I have always been fair in my criticism of his policies, but this time he will be going to far not to receive chastisement.

Yes, he has secured our country from attack, but the cost of that was the Patriot Act, a bill containing blatant violations of Constitutional amendments. But Hey, its war so a lot of us gave him a pass on that one.

The, he signed CFR, limiting Free Speech during elections...not supportive of the 1st Amendment. Everyone said "Oh, thats OK, the Supreme Court will rule against it, thats why he signed it, he knows it will never stand up to the court test.".....Wrong!

Then he signed the Medicaid overhaul, essentially creating the largest entitlement in the history of the country in one fell swoop.....a move toward socialism.

Now he is proposing Amnesty for Illegals, instead of enforcing the existing laws and having them rounded up and deported. He wants to use the money that you see taken out of your income go toward helping a class of people who are here illegally. Your immigrant ancestors will be rolling in the grave when they find out the hoops they had to jump through just to emigrate into this country have been eliminated, with entitlements provided to boot. This proposal is a slap in the face to everyone who went through Ellis Island.

IMO, the final straw will be Bush's refusal to let the AWB sunset. He will sign that renewal. Why should I believe he would do otherwise when I can see what he has already done.

So, on face we have a President who claims to be a conservative, yet in principle he acts like a socialist.

Maybe its the eight years of Clinton that has desensitized us to the the point that we define Conservatism as someone who keeps his pants on and goes to church, irrelevant of whatever nonsense he does in office.

Bush is a neo-con, he is not a Regan type conservative. I sense a major spit in the Republican Party if he continues as he has.

The State of North Carolina has been openly encouraging illegal aliens since long before President Bush was elected.

It maybe free to them, but it's not free to you or I. Somebody has to pay for it at some point. If they can't, the government will get the money from others.

You have outlined your list of valid grievances in a fair summary, but those facts are absent a few rejoinders..

I have been an employer in the hospitality industry for more than a few of decades, (at one point 3800 employees), and have employed more than my share of illegals. In the 60's in Chicago and throughout the Midwest, it was Greeks, Polish, and Lithuanians, even a few Russians, and Cubans. Most of these wonderful folks stayed long enough to establish a record of employment and opened their own businesses, or bought homes and learned English and blended into our lives as equals.

In the 70's it was Middle Easterners, and in the south, it was the beginning of the heavy Mexican influx. In the 80's it began the Pacific Rim invasion, Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, and more Mexicans. The 90's was more Middle Easterners, and a lot more Central American's, than Mexican. It became a joke and a pattern that we had a second shift of Muslims that would work Sundays and Holidays to keep the doors opened when everyone else wanted or just took those days off.

My jobs were in the beginning, low paying, bottom rung, entry level jobs. Jobs that were steady and dirty. Maintainance, housekeeping, kitchen, dishwashing, busboy.. I started hiring illegals as a practice in the 70's by necessity.  By then, we had changed the school calendar (shorter summer vacation making training high school kids almost useless), child labor laws, under 16 unavailable, and with few exceptions (blacks), welfare or single mom minorities, that wouldn't work longer than 26 weeks. Just long enough to qualify for extended unemployment. It was far more insidious than just quitting after 26 weeks, they would fake an injury and file suit, or claim harassment, or labor claims against our company, costing thousands and keeping a law firm, not just a lawyer on the payroll (the 4th largest line item on my P & L statement).

For the most part, we kept these employees and raised their pay as they increased their effectiveness just to prevent the turnover. They would furnish us with relatives to replace themselves as they moved up the job ladder. NOBODY applied for these positions, and paying $12 an hour, plus benefits $6 more, for a dishwasher just doesn't work. These folks worked for $8, and would take home food, and learn a trade, cook, bellboy, bartender, waiter, and move up as soon as we taught them.

I left the hassle to raise my children, but just as much to escape the government and changing attitudes of my fellow countrymen toward immigrants.. and this sort of problem we are faced with today.. Bitch all you want, but you are not allowed to be as aware as you need to be.. Today you have almost exclusively fast foods and poor motel service because of this pressure to pander to your emotions,. Now you pump your own gas, pick up your own food in a restaurant, and soon you will make your own beds, or purchase fruits and vegetables from Timbuktu, because we cut off immigration... I'm outta here.. Bash Bush, bus your own tables, and feed your kids junk.. you are winning..  Developing..
