EWTN is the Catholic cable network. It is probably somewhere on your local basic cable. If I saw a photo of this poor man, I would probably recognize him.

Please pray for this great man of God!

Father Benedict Groeschel

CRISIS Magazine - e-Letter

January 12, 2004

Dear Friend,

I'm afraid I have some very bad news. As you may have already heard,
Fr. Benedict Groeschel, founder of the Franciscan Friars of the
Renewal in New York City and long-time friend of CRISIS, was struck
by a car last night and is now in the hospital in critical
condition.

Details are still sketchy, but sources say that Fr. Groeschel was
walking to a restaurant in Orlando when he was hit by a car near the
Orlando International Airport. He's now in intensive care at the
Orlando Regional Medical Center in critical but stable condition.

We spoke with Fr. Groeschel's assistant this morning who confirmed
the news, saying that the situation didn't look good. "We need
nothing short of a miracle," she said.

At this point, the most important thing we can do is pray. The
Eternal Word Television Network (EWTN) is broadcasting a Holy Hour
for him this morning, and Fr. Groeschel's assistant requested that we
ask for prayers from St. Francis, the founder of the order, and St.
Augustine, who has been Fr. Groeschel's favorite all his life.

Father Groeschel is one of the most powerful voices for the Church
in this country and around the world. Not only that, but he's been
absolutely selfless in his generosity to numerous Catholic
apostolates, including this one. I know you don't need any
encouragement from me to pray for this truly holy man.

I'm very sorry for the bad news, but I knew you'd want to be kept
informed. I'll let you know as soon as we learn anything new.

Best,

Deal

_______________________________________

Dear Friends (PLEASE PASS THIS REQUEST ON)

Please pray for Fr. Benedict ( Groeschel) last night (Sun) he was in a car accident in Florida. The most recent news is from 12:30 am and he has arrived at the hospital and is in critical condition (I was told it is not looking good).

I am at school but I am supposed to leave for retreat tomorrow I will try to keep you updated

In Christ,

Br. Michael C.F.R

"I don't know who he is either . . . "

He's a generally theologically conservative Catholic author and media personality. He's popular among moderatately traditional (but non-Levebvre-ite) Catholics.

Father, we pray for our dear brother. Preserve the life of this servant of yours. We ask for You to restore him, and heal him. Give skill and insight to the doctors and nurses that are caring for him. Give him life and breath for many years to come that he might continue to edify Your church, and your children.

We pray this in Jesus's name and for His sake

Amen

I have known Fr. GROESCHEL for a long time. We know him only as Fr. BEN. In 1973, he was a celebrant at our wedding Mass; we have some wonderful pictures of him.

I can only tell you that he is the most wonderful, caring Priest that I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. If GOD has decided that he must come to Heaven, then it is our great loss and Heaven's great gain.

We can and will pray for him; the wisdom of GOD will reign.

The two people who were with him last night while he was crossing the street stated that he was a hit by a car that he didn't see and obviously the driver didn't see him.

He entered the ER conscious and aware of his surroundings, then his blood pressure dropped.

Fr. Benedict is still in critical condition. Doctors are guardedly optimistic. There is every reason to hope for his return to good health. There is every need of prayer. Please keep everyone praying.

An aside, but it's proven to be a complicated and difficult one, is that many people keep calling about his health. Pray people stop calling the hospital, his friars and Trinity Retreat as all those lines have been overloaded when real communications need to be made regarding his primary doctors and those working on him.

His vital signs are good now. But they need to strengthen before his bones can be set. I believe his right arm and leg may have breaks in them.

Another report follows:

Renowned TV priest Father Benedict Groeschel, author of numerous books and popular EWTN commentator, was hit by a car near Orlando International Airport Sunday night, according to reports on the national radio program, Morning Air with Jeff Cavins.

Details remain sketchy, but reports are that he had just arrived in Orlando and was walking to a place for food when he was struck, possibly breaking a leg and arm. Latest reports indicate that he is partially conscious and awaiting surgery. We humbly ask all to pray for this fine priest.

I was with Fr. Groeschel yesterday morning at a Marian and Eucharistic Conference in Paso Robles, California. We spoke about Mel Gibson's movie, The Passion of The Christ, and the growth of Catholic radio and made plans to speak by phone again next week. After praying the rosary in the conference center, Father took the stage to encourage the audience of a thousand Catholics to develop and spread the devotion of Eucharistic Adoration. Instead of applause at the end of his powerful speech, he asked for a Marian hymn to be sung. ("I can't stand applause," he told the adoring crowd.) As the thousand faithful raised their voices in song, Father left the stage and the building to hurry to the airport to make his flight to Florida.

I am deeply saddened to hear of this accident, and ask all members of the Catholic Exchange family to please keep good Fr. Groeschel in your prayers.

Sincerely in Christ,

Tom Allen
