Border Collies are very smart but are not really family dogs. They must have a job or they are maniacs.
One can take the dog away from the sheep herding but one cannot take the sheep herding out of the dog.
They are beautiful and smart as a whip but really not for cities or families in them.

Guy in my neighborhood has a Border Collie. Bumper sticker on his truck reads:
"IF IT ISN'T A BORDER COLLIE, IT IS ONLY A DOG"

Ditto, by far.
Sadly mine got IMHA and died at 3 yrs. old.
We got a 'replacement' recently. Possibly a cockapoo. Looks more poo than cocka though.
It's a cute lovable dog but I'm always thinking, "She ain't Border Collie smart by a loooong shot"
Ours adored kids( except if on a bicycle), but was wary of some men. She was an excellent judge of character. The men she didn't like were the same ones I didn't either.
They are NOT house dogs.

Border Collie. Smartest dog I ever had. Yep, my old Border Collie would pee on command, very handy on rainy nights.
I loved that dog, she was 15 and I had to put her down a year ago, I still miss her.
Now we have a Norfolk Terrier mix, weighs 10 lbs.

I've had my border collie for 10 yrs now, and hands down, the best, smartest, most loyal dog I've ever had. She's been with me since my junior year of college. She went with me on my big post-college sabbatical out west for 8 mos. She was there when I got married (well, I had her brought to the outdoor reception!), and has now 'adopted' my now 3 yr old daughter as her own. I think more of that dog than I do alot of people. Even at 10 she's shown little sign of slowing down. About the only thing I can really tell that she doesn't do as well as she used to is go up in the air for a frisbee. I've noticed she is being much more careful about how she lands, whereas before she'd go up, get the frisbee, and worry about the landing after that. Great breed!

Border Collie. Smartest dog I ever had.How many Border Collies does it take to change a light bulb?
Answer: Just one. And I'll replace any wiring that isn't up to code while I'm at it.

EXCELLENT CHOICE. AND QUITE SO. VERY, VERY SMART.
HOWEVER, they either need kids or lots of attention or a big yard and a companion dog to play with and/or ducks or some such to rid herd over.
Herding is REALLY in their genes. And without attention and stimulation, they can chew much of a house or apt to shreds in hours or less.
And, I'm still partial to Lassie Collies. Though the fur is a real mess!

Ditto, Border collie smartest dog. When my husband got Apache, a beautiful broad chested black and white border collie from someone shipping out, he had been trained to protect. He is the only inside house dog I ever had, and so well mannered. He would get up to investigate noises at night without making a sound. He never barked, but if he thought there was a threat, he growled deep in his throat, as if inviting an intruder to come in and get torn apart. I still miss him.

Our Darren (yes, that's the dog's name) was a rescue. He looks Border Collie. He's the perfect dog if he was willing to be left alone. He's destroyed my husband's chair and his seat in his pickup when he was left alone.
The dog's temperament is flawless--wouldn't even know how to fight back. We love him. He is right now playing with his large bone throwing it in the air and trying to catch it. We're concerned he's going to throw it through the patio door.
Lately, he has decided he'll be the one to decide when we go to bed. First he has to get my husband there and then he works on me, barking until he gets us where he wants us.
We tend to go through the same thing in the am when it's time to rise. He's hilarious.

We’ve got a 1 YO Golden Retriever that’s the smartest dog I’ve ever had. And I’ve had four German Shepherds and a Border Collie before. This is the 3rd Golden we’ve had, so I’m not saying all Goldens are this smart.
This guy is scary smart.
