Catholic politicians who support abortion, assisted suicide or any other "life issues" out of step with church teachings should refrain from Holy Communion, Archbishop Alfred C. Hughes has declared.

Hughes' statement, contained in his column in this week's Clarion Herald, the archdiocesan newspaper, is in stride with a ratcheting up of nationwide pressure by Catholic bishops to enforce orthodoxy among Catholics in public life.

I didn't see Archbishop Burke's interview, Des, but in written interviews I read recently in the La Crosse Diocesan paper, he stated he is going to be consistant in his treatment of legislators in the St. Louis diocese.

The local rag should triple its ink order immediately because Archbishop Burke is a man of integrity and won't let slanted reporting keep him from saving souls and innocent lives.

several excommunications that occurred in the 1950's involving Catholic legislators who fought vehemently and voted against a decision by the Catholic Church in their diocese to desegregate their parochial schools.

Clearly, Bishop Burke's Notification cannot be said to be unprecedented, and because it is limited to "anti-life" issues (abortion and euthanasia), which one could conclude are even more important than school desegregation, excommunication appears to me to be an appopriate exercise of discretion.

If you remind me, I'll research and relate the actual number of those in attendance.

I would love to see four or five hundred thousand Catholics brave the cold to bid farewell to this man of God. :)

Okey, dokey.

This morning/afternoon at Mass (it was at noon), the schedule for Mass this week and next was announced at the Cathedral (I love that church). The official stuff:

Solemn Vespers, Sunday, January 25, 2004, 7:30 pm - all are invited.

Installation Mass, Monday, January 26, 2004 2 pm - all are invited. Reception (translation: mega party) to follow.

I'll probably go to vespers, but Mass might not be feasible. Anyway, it was also announced that all Masses on Friday will be moved to the St. Cecilia chapel in the crypt, so that all the lighting and cameras for the live broadcast can be installed. Eucharistic Adoration during the day next Saturday will not take place (this NEVER happens) all in preparation. What Father didn't say this morning was who was broadcasting this. I looked on the EWTN site and it's not scheduled. If I learn something locally, I will post it. I can't imagine that EWTN wouldn't carry it though.

My daughter just told me that Archbishop Burke's final Mass in La Crosse was today at 4pm CST. I will relay information about the ceremony when it becomes available.

Secondly, EWTN re-broadcast Archbishop Burke's interview this afternoon so I got an opportunity to see it. What a magnificent human being! I hope the courage and conviction he has shown is contagious.

By the way, next Friday, EWTN will be interviewing Mel Gibson regarding "The Passion".

Possibly. My problem is that people are using me, myself and I interchangeably and they are not. I is subjective, me is objective and myself is reflexive. Myself cannot (okay should not) be used unless either I or me is somewhere earlier in the sentence. It has to reflect. MAJOR pet peeve of mine. Don't know why.
