We live way beyond the standard of our parents.

Indeed. One car is now two at least, kids used to sleep at least two to a bedroom. One TV, one phone, no VCR/DVD or computer, no cable.

Food was bought as ingredients and assembled at home. Few kids were involved in after school activities that required a cash outlay and nobody belonged to a gym. Clothing was often handed down from one child to another and if your sock had a hole you mended it instead of buying a new one.

"Whoever said that you can't buy happiness forgot about puppies."

That is so true! My new baby Rat Terrier is sleeping on my collar bone right now. I'm in love.

If your radio .or your watch. or a host of other items broke or wore out, you has it repaired instead of throwing it away.

My parents have both been teachers in NC schools for over 30 years. Personally I have to say I don't think they ever seen 60K, as they are lowly teachers and not administrators ;),

That's because you're in NC. They should move to PA, where we have among the highest paid teachers in the country. In our school district, I believe the AVERAGE is currently 64,000 for teachers. Administrators get 6 figure salaries...

When it comes to income taxes, the Democratic presidential candidates keep telling us, the rich don't pay enough.

The Democrats' sense of social justice won't be satisfied until the top 5% pay all the taxes and the remaining 95% pay none.

But what better way to ensure that the wealthiest among us will have the greatest influence on the government? After all, authority always comes with responsibility (like the responsibility to pay the government's expenses). He who pays the bills will be listened to.

Liberals don't understand that taking up responsibility is liberating because it is empowering. If liberals want the average Joe to take this country back from the fat cats, then the average Joe should pay a greater share of the taxes, not less. How's that for ironic!

And yet on some level liberals do understand this. Just look at how the mid-century feminists used the language of liberation to persuade women to go to work: no longer will your husband be your unquestioned king, because now you can pay your own way. Your increase in responsibility for the family finances for will give you increased authority in the family and the marriage relationship.

Well, it's the same thing here, it seems to me, except that Democrats are on the other side of the issue. They're telling the Average Joes to just let the Fat Cats pay the bills. And if Average Joe decide this is the way to go, then he'll be moving toward the role of chattel housewife and complaining about how the fat cats are running the show.

Democrats are always being hamstrung by these sorts of ironies. I think it's because they're always going around trying to shake their fist at the natural order of things. I wouldn't be surprised if the presence of irony is a special flag or indicator that you've broken the natural law in an especially flagrant way.

Thank goodness we've got the Republicans standing in there and keeping things from going off the irrational (but well-intended) cliff. A Democrat universe would have us all suffering under its ironies.

And it was a radio or a watch.

Kids owned neither unless they built it themselves or inherited it.

A watch was something you got for a graduation present.

A watch was something you got for a graduation present. I kept the one my parents gave me for about ten years, when I could not longer find someone to repair it.

Nonsense. The top percent get more income than they pay taxes on. Why do you think graspers don't quote how much of the total income they receive when they quote how much they pay? You might like/admire them, but the worst of the rich - not all the rich - are exploiters and beneath contempt. They buy off enough corrupt pols to ensure that they never get "soaked." It's never happened. The good news is, sometimes the most egrigeous graspers - people like Fastow, Stewart, and Koslowszki - get punished.

Sure you're on the right site? Class envy is very unbecoming.

As far as the numbers go, I'll go with IRS figures as opposed to some anonymous internet poster with an apparent jealousy problem.

You cited no facts, instead preferring to spout off something I might see on DU. If you'd care to post facts, I'll be happy to refute them. Until them, I'll call it like I see it.
