OK, stop.

Did you notice that the site suddenly got very unresponsive?

Yes went to heck, most responses were in the 5 second range - but then a few went into the 20 to 30 second range... then it improved all of the sudden and went to about 1 or 2 seconds.

Al-Qa'ida's 'Voice of Jihad' Magazine: Issue No. 9

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "The online magazine 'The Voice of Jihad,' which is published by Al-Qa'ida members in Saudi Arabia and describes itself as a "biweekly dealing with Jihad and the Mujahideen in the Arabian Peninsula," devoted its ninth issue to two main subjects: Osama bin Laden's most recent speech, excerpts of which were broadcast on Al-Jazeera television, and the ongoing debate in Al-Qa'ida over attacks in Saudi Arabia. The following are excerpts from this issue:"

Thank you.

What I was just demonstrating is what happens when we have to remove a comment on a thread that has several thousands of replies.

I just removed the two replies before this post here, and that is what caused that slowdown.

Some seem to think we just locked that other thread for the fun of it. No, there is a glitch with removing replies on threads that are that big. And considering that this thread had been attracting some trolls, and attracting some returning bannees, and had some flamewars occasionally erupting, we couldn't continually bring the site to a standstill to clean things up.

That is why it was locked.

As for why the Hobbit Hole thread has not had such a fate, simply put, it hasn't required us to remove many comments. We'll probably have to lock it soon. I only hope that me explaining this will not cause some to go and post crap on it in an effort to get it locked.

Thanks for your help in the demonstration. LM

So IOW, when you are removing comments, and depending on the amount and/or size of the comment being removed, it slows the site down??

So if it happened on this small thread then what is the difference between this and a long thread ? I would seem that this would be dependent on how many posts were veiwable at once. In this case almost the max of 90+

It has to do with the need for the system to end up doing a full table scan that doesn't mesh up with the index on the table.

It is a glitch, it will probably be fixed in the future, but for now it is a problem which makes it that when threads get too big we are going to have to lock them if we have to often go in and moderate them.

It is better than a few years ago, when every thread would need a "Thread 2" after a few hundred posts, though.

Thanks, LM

Hi! I should have put the source on the excerpt. Thank you. Some points of interest from the article: 1.) it sounds like AQ is planning for what we will do after we are attacked, and they are anticipating that we will go into SA and other ME countries to secure the oil. For them to be discussing our response to their (not yet launched) attack, is chilling. To me, it goes along with their "apologies" for the harm they are going to do to the world with the attack. In short, it seems like they are certain of success!

2.) The video of the attacks in SA is in the possession of a newsgroup there.

I am becoming increasingly anxious about what the remainder of this month may hold. Also, on one of Daleel's latest rants, he responds to a person who has been arguing with him on the IH site, that after the attack, the person will be blind. Maybe it is just my anxiety, but don't nuke detonations, as well as searing chemicals, cause blindness?

If this has to happen again, I'll post a reply to the thread in advance of taking action.

I've been a sysadmin (mainframe business) forever and find lots of code that will lock file while only reading records - and bottleneck the system - if a specific no-lock command is not declared. Maybe in your control tables/blocks you can set it. Or you could ask your vendor to make sure the remove/change code never locks during a read, only during a delete/change.

re post no. 119 in which you said in part, "I am becoming increasingly anxious about what the remainder of this month may hold. Also, on one of Daleel's latest rants, he responds to a person who has been arguing with him on the IH site, that after the attack, the person will be blind. Maybe it is just my anxiety, but don't nuke detonations, as well as searing chemicals, cause blindness?"

===

OPINION: Someone should tell "daleel" that we may be blind, but he'll be dead, shot, or captured --- whichever comes first. Even if he's the real deal (ie low-grade AQ); he should understand that message. Simple Message to Terrorists and Wannabes: DON'T MESS WITH THE U.S.A.!

As for worrying, it doesn't accomplish anything. Don't worry, but do be concerned.

Most of the AQ/Jihadi/Islamist Extremist trash-talk is pure chicken manure. A small percentage of the internet "chatter" though is important to analyze and discuss.

So, put on those waders and keep looking is my motto.

That's very interesting! This al quada movement has been organized to the extent of period publications here in the USA. I wonder how long he had been publishing that magazine? I bet the feds know and they probably know who subscribed as well. And I wonder if any public funds went into this fiasco.

My guess is it started shortly after Clinton entered office.

New virus hitting in-boxes Last modified: January 26, 2004, 2:46 PM PST By Robert Lemos Staff Writer, CNET News.com update Antivirus firms on Monday warned of a new mass-mailing computer virus that has gained a foothold in a large number of PCs by masquerading as an e-mail error. The virus--known as MyDoom, Novarg and as a variant of the Mimail virus by different antivirus firms--arrives in an in-box with one of several different random subject lines such as "Mail Delivery System," "Test" or "Mail Transaction Failed." The body of the e-mail contains an executable file and a statement such as:...

It has to do with the need for the system to end up doing a full table scan that doesn't mesh up with the index on the table.

Thanks for the explanation. Indulge my offtopicness for a second. As I've been a database developer (Among a million other projects) for a while now(13+ years), might I offer a suggestion for the future?

Add a 1 bit boolean(Yes/No) display flag to the record layout.

The security layer allows who can view and or set the field in the table. When the range of records is displayed after a query, the "Viewable" field is simply a parameter on the SQL. Whatever parses the final output can add in "record xx removed by moderator" for all us normal schlubs where the Sequence(post) number has a gap. Admins and such can change the flag or just be allowed to view the deletes.

What's the end result? No more oddball changes in the index, causing the database to be-reindexed. It would behave just as fast as it normally does.

I ran into a similar problem on one of the commercial medical databases we had that was removing lots of records because they were superceded. We were removing them into a history table, indexing the database and refreshing the works. It wasn't a problem till we hit about 20 Million records. After the re-design, the purging was a monthly maintenance thing that queried all the "non-view" flags, moved the records into an "After 1 month" history table, deleted them from the frequently accessed table and re-indexed the table once.(I didn't design the DB from the start, I was brought in to fix it, so don't bark at me for a crappy design to begin with:) ).

One of Daleel's posts today:

daleelAlmojahid
la elaah elaa alaaah

you will hear some brainwashing news soon,
News from Iraq are saying that a One of Top All-Qaida mojahideen has been captured.

by the name of Hassan Ghul.

this information will be distreputed soon on the meida as a very important catch.

i can tell you that this guy has nothing to do with Al-Qaida he is a mojahid that came from abroad but hes not directly or indirectly linked with Al-Qaida as a group.

just thought of giving you some information before it hits the brainwashing news coz as i told you before Bush and the white house Gang are going to try in the coming few weeks to give the impression that they are wining the war against Al-Qaida for election perposes.

may god protect the mojahideen under Al-Qaida or under any other group fighting for the name of God
