OK, stop.

Did you notice that the site suddenly got very unresponsive?

Yes went to heck, most responses were in the 5 second range - but then a few went into the 20 to 30 second range... then it improved all of the sudden and went to about 1 or 2 seconds.

Al-Qa'ida's 'Voice of Jihad' Magazine: Issue No. 9

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "The online magazine 'The Voice of Jihad,' which is published by Al-Qa'ida members in Saudi Arabia and describes itself as a "biweekly dealing with Jihad and the Mujahideen in the Arabian Peninsula," devoted its ninth issue to two main subjects: Osama bin Laden's most recent speech, excerpts of which were broadcast on Al-Jazeera television, and the ongoing debate in Al-Qa'ida over attacks in Saudi Arabia. The following are excerpts from this issue:"

I only had the chance to respond "Go ahead!"; I couldn't even get to first refresh because you already said to stop - it took so long to get my post in.

Thank you.

What I was just demonstrating is what happens when we have to remove a comment on a thread that has several thousands of replies.

I just removed the two replies before this post here, and that is what caused that slowdown.

Some seem to think we just locked that other thread for the fun of it. No, there is a glitch with removing replies on threads that are that big. And considering that this thread had been attracting some trolls, and attracting some returning bannees, and had some flamewars occasionally erupting, we couldn't continually bring the site to a standstill to clean things up.

That is why it was locked.

As for why the Hobbit Hole thread has not had such a fate, simply put, it hasn't required us to remove many comments. We'll probably have to lock it soon. I only hope that me explaining this will not cause some to go and post crap on it in an effort to get it locked.

Thanks for your help in the demonstration. LM

So IOW, when you are removing comments, and depending on the amount and/or size of the comment being removed, it slows the site down??

So if it happened on this small thread then what is the difference between this and a long thread ? I would seem that this would be dependent on how many posts were veiwable at once. In this case almost the max of 90+

Size of the thread, not size of the replies.

Thanks, LM

It has to do with the need for the system to end up doing a full table scan that doesn't mesh up with the index on the table.

It is a glitch, it will probably be fixed in the future, but for now it is a problem which makes it that when threads get too big we are going to have to lock them if we have to often go in and moderate them.

It is better than a few years ago, when every thread would need a "Thread 2" after a few hundred posts, though.

Thanks, LM

Hi! I should have put the source on the excerpt. Thank you. Some points of interest from the article: 1.) it sounds like AQ is planning for what we will do after we are attacked, and they are anticipating that we will go into SA and other ME countries to secure the oil. For them to be discussing our response to their (not yet launched) attack, is chilling. To me, it goes along with their "apologies" for the harm they are going to do to the world with the attack. In short, it seems like they are certain of success!

2.) The video of the attacks in SA is in the possession of a newsgroup there.

I am becoming increasingly anxious about what the remainder of this month may hold. Also, on one of Daleel's latest rants, he responds to a person who has been arguing with him on the IH site, that after the attack, the person will be blind. Maybe it is just my anxiety, but don't nuke detonations, as well as searing chemicals, cause blindness?
