The Cannabis Catastrophe (Pot softens brains: Stoners don't care)
The Daily Mail [UK] ^ | January 26 2003 | Melanie Phillips

Posted on 01/26/2004 2:36:49 PM PST by quidnunc

As David Blunkett contemplates the chaos and fury triggered by his decision to downgrade the law on cannabis, he could do worse than consider the case of Dominique Lansdowne.

Eleven years ago, when she was 18, the former care assistant from Swindon started smoking cannabis once a week. ‘After a couple of weeks, I found it was addictive’, she said. ‘As soon as you start you get the feeling you’re completely relaxed and calm, but then you crave it. I used it more and more until I was smoking it every day. Then I couldn’t work because I was too stoned all the time. I was so paranoid I couldn’t leave the house.

‘I haven’t worked for the past six years. I lost all my friends and nearly lost my family. I couldn’t afford to pay my mortgage, my house was repossessed, I had to live in a hostel. I was in hospital three times, and couldn’t cope at all in the community. I had no social skills left. My life was in tatters. I didn’t stop completely until two years ago.

‘I still take anti-psychotics, antidepressants and anti-anxiety drugs, and will probably have to take medication for the rest of my life. I’m positive cannabis was the cause; I became paranoid as soon as I started smoking it. I’ve known hundreds of people who smoke it; all of them have some kind of paranoia or a problem, whether they recognise it or not.’

All of which makes it truly extraordinary that this Thursday, cannabis will be downgraded from a class B to a class C drug.

The Home Secretary’s move has delighted the drug legalisers — but astonished and horrified those like Dominique, who know the truth about its effects.

Tory leader Michael Howard has boldly declared that a future Conservative government will reverse the policy. Yet Mr Blunkett’s so called ‘reform’ has already caused many people mistakenly to believe cannabis is now legal or safe to use.

Despite ministers’ desperate insistence that it remains illegal and dangerous, putting cannabis in the same category as slimming pills, painkillers, tranquillisers and anabolic steroids sends the inescapable signal that it is not very dangerous after all.

Dominique Lansdowne knows what nonsense this is. Before she used cannabis, she had not even smoked tobacco; afterwards she also tried speed, LSD and ecstasy. ‘I would never have touched hard drugs if I hadn’t taken cannabis. Reclassification is really dreadful and sad because the government is saying cannabis isn’t that bad and so people are going to take it thinking it’s not going to do them any harm.’

Just a suggestion, but if she can't "handle" smoking marijuana perhaps she should stop.

My solution, which will displease both the pro- and anti- WODers:

1. Legalize the growing of pot solely for one's personal use.*
2. Anyone selling pot once should be publicly beaten. Anyone selling a few times, death penalty.
3. As for s**t like meth, first offense public beating, second, death penalty.
4. Same as #1 for opium, same as #2 for for opium, same as #3 for heroin and other hard drugs.

*Same for alcohol, if we want to be consistent.

It won't happen, of course. But it would work. Also, if the government keeps subsidizing drug users/losers via social services, new generations of drug users/losers will keep magically appearing.

"afterwards she also tried speed, LSD and ecstasy." Maybe that had something to do with the "soft brain." She probably figured that pot was not as bad as the govt made it out to be so why not try some acid.

While Satchmo could certainly blow a mean trumpet, I never heard his referred to as one of the great thinkers of the 20th Century.

By the wat, did you know that he got his start playing in a Storeyville sportin' house in the Big Easy?

From Dickens's Pickwick Papers,, testimonials given at a meeting of the Brick Lane Branch of the United Grand Junction Ebenezer Temperance Association:

'H. Walker, tailor, wife, and two children. When in better circumstances, owns to having been in the constant habit of drinking ale and beer; says he is not certain whether he did not twice a week, for twenty years, taste "dog's nose," which your committee find upon inquiry, to be compounded of warm porter, moist sugar, gin, and nutmeg (a groan, and 'So it is!' from an elderly female). Is now out of work and penniless; thinks it must be the porter (cheers) or the loss of the use of his right hand; is not certain which, but thinks it very likely that, if he had drunk nothing but water all his life, his fellow-workman would never have stuck a rusty needle in him, and thereby occasioned his accident (tremendous cheering). Has nothing but cold water to drink, and never feels thirsty (great applause).

'Betsy Martin, widow, one child, and one eye. Goes out charing and washing, by the day; never had more than one eye, but knows her mother drank bottled stout, and shouldn't wonder if that caused it (immense cheering). Thinks it not impossible that if she had always abstained from spirits she might have had two eyes by this time (tremendous applause). Used, at every place she went to, to have eighteen-pence a day, a pint of porter, and a glass of spirits; but since she became a member of the Brick Lane Branch, has always demanded three-and-sixpence (the announcement of this most interesting fact was received with deafening enthusiasm).

'Henry Beller was for many years toast-master at various corporation dinners, during which time he drank a great deal of foreign wine; may sometimes have carried a bottle or two home with him; is not quite certain of that, but is sure if he did, that he drank the contents. Feels very low and melancholy, is very feverish, and has a constant thirst upon him; thinks it must be the wine he used to drink (cheers). Is out of employ now; and never touches a drop of foreign wine by any chance (tremendous plaudits).

'Thomas Burton is purveyor of cat's meat to the Lord Mayor and Sheriffs, and several members of the Common Council (the announcement of this gentleman's name was received with breathless interest). Has a wooden leg; finds a wooden leg expensive, going over the stones; used to wear second-hand wooden legs, and drink a glass of hot gin-and-water regularly every night--sometimes two (deep sighs). Found the second-hand wooden legs split and rot very quickly; is firmly persuaded that their constitution was undermined by the gin-and-water (prolonged cheering). Buys new wooden legs now, and drinks nothing but water and weak tea. The new legs last twice as long as the others used to do, and he attributes this solely to his temperate habits (triumphant cheers).'

The idea that potheads are friendly or peaceful is the STUPIDEST load of crap I've ever heard. I've seen too much BS in real life to prove it wrong. And society-wise too.

Don't anyone bother to tell me I'm wrong on this either, it will be ignored. Proof is already in the pudding.

When reefer gets to be completely legal, and everyone carries it around with them (no doubt in attractive packages), where will the users go to indulge? It's getting close to being illegal to smoke within one's own home.

Reminds me of Szasz: If you take a drug not prescribed by a physician and say it makes you feel better, you are an addict. But, if you take take a drug prescribed by a physician and say it makes you feel better, this is proof that you have a disease with a biochemical origin.

I have known too many regular pot smokers in my day that were also perfectly productive, intelligent people. Would they be a little sharper if they never touched the stuff? Maybe... probably. Have I known people that got "carried away" and allowed Maryjane to have a negative effect on their life? Sure. But it is hardly as destructive as this article would have you believe.

I've seen much more damage caused by alchohol. (I know, I know.. the dopers favorite argument.. But its true, at least in my experience.)

Please quote stats for that. I've read the drug problem was reduced (at that time). At the very least, less drug addicts.

If people who want to be stoned and stupid can grow their own, just no selling, it takes the gangs and criminal element out. Same for opium. It's merciful to those who insist on wasting their precious human lives, and harsh to those who want to enrich themselves in the drug traffic. I say it's a good idea.
