News Advisory:

On Feb. 1, 2003, our nation and the world lost the seven brave and dedicated crew members of the Space Shuttle Columbia. But the Columbia seven - Rick, Willie, Dave, Mike, KC, Laurel, and Ilan -- are not the only heroes of STS-107. As we approach the first anniversary of this tragedy, their husbands and wives, sons and daughters, mothers and fathers and sisters and brothers daily bear the heavy load of this terrible loss.

In keeping with its commitment to raise funds for each of the seven Columbia families to help compensate for the current and future economic impact of the loss of their loved ones, the Columbia Shuttle Memorial Trust has created 30 second and 15 second PSAs featuring former United States President George H.W. Bush. These PSAs issue a call to all Americans to seize this opportunity to honor the crew of the Columbia by helping to ease the financial burdens of their families.

Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC), the National Football League, GenCorp/Aerojet and The Aerospace Corporation, among others, have partnered with the Trust to provide extensive support towards the Trust's fundraising goals. In addition, U.S. Newswire, a national news release wire service, has provided pro bono distribution of this meaningful PSA. However, caring for the families of fallen heroes is not just a corporate endeavor. All Americans should join this important effort. Our astronauts and their families answered the call when our nation needed them, and now we should answer their call.

The PSA will be aired on an hourly basis on NASA Television, beginning Thursday, Jan. 29. Media should record the PSA during NASA's video files at 9 a.m., noon, 3 p.m., 6 p.m., and 9 p.m. EST. NASA Television can be found on the satellite AMC 9, Transponder 9C, 85 degrees west longitude, vertical polarization downlink frequency -- 3880 MHz, Audio at 6.8 MHz.
