Viacom's Porn Channel - There's a reason so many teenagers want their MTV ~ WSJ.

So the entire world has now got a taste of what passes for entertainment on MTV every day. That was our reaction to the furor over the MTV-produced Super Bowl halftime show, which network President Judy McGrath described as "exciting" and "great" and marred only by "five seconds none of us knew anything about."

The following are Viacom owned companies. A conservative parent's worst nightmare.

Remember Simon & Schuster who paid Hillary $8 million for her book & CBS did that lovely hatchet job on President Reagan with Mr. Streisand.

It all makes sense.

I wish I could find the comment by a thoughtful FReeper on one of the Super Bowl Boob threads. It pointed out the mother of all ironies. The same folks who produce this trash are generally the ones who hate W and are against the War on Terroism. At the same time, those who want us dead, want us dead because of the folks who produce this trash.

Really! This is getting out of hand.

If I want porn I'll download it from the internet or go to an adult book store.

It has no business on TV. Of course, discount the dozens of shows that revolve around soft porn and tasteless, talentless, bad writing jokes.

I'm afraid you're right. MTV USA promotes a sort of debased trash that no sane person would want in their home, either here or abroad. It's quite perverse.

But MTV produces separate regional feeds for Europe, SE Asia, and South Asia which do NOT stoop to the same carnal level as MTV USA. Entirely different formats, "DJs", music, and cultural approaches.

MTV Europe still has the semi-artsy sense of the original MTV; MTV Singapore is cutesy adolescent (the most daring thing I saw recently was an MTV Singapore host asking to be kicked in the butt in public, and everyone was wearing their clothes); MTV India is into silliness and yuk yuks.

Unfortunately, the trashiest and most perverse MTV material is reserved for American youth, by huge and inarguable margin. Along with the unique and healthy dose of gangsta rap which is not shown on any other MTV regional outlet.

Interesting. I wonder why.

In Europe, they don't like gangsta rap; in Singapore, they'd shut MTV down if it got too out of hand (and also because it serves the Malaysian and Indonesian markets); in India they like Indian-style rock, not gangsta rap.

Ever seen Indian music videos?

They have *really* good dancers, and they do a lot of really good dancing, then suddenly they'll throw in some of those ugly hip-hop moves. A jarring incongruity.

We're pretty sure the kids will survive it, but we're less sanguine about the long-term effects of the daily sex diet that Ms. McGrath is feeding poorly supervised youngsters.

I think many folks will be surprised to read the following information. It seems as if the daily sex diet is more interesting to one group of poorly supervised youngsters, than it is to other groups. What is the agenda of Ms. McGrath and VIACOM?

Yeah, its strange stuff. And the MTV DJs sometimes get dressed-up in traditional Indian garb with turbans and sometimes wierd makeup, and it's a festival of humor (I think they're somewhat mocking more traditional INdian culture, but not sure).

MTV Singapore is mostly the DJs yakking and yukking between vids, somewhat like the original MTV USA. They are pretty respectful of their audiences and culture from what I can see (in the USA you'd call them "normal" kids). Interesting, frequently the DJs are switching from English, to Bahasa Malaysia, to Bahasa Indonesia all in the same dialogue.

I am bipartisan because I have equal contempt for both parties. One reason is because of cable television. They are for all practical purposes a taxing body. I do not believe in censorship. But I do not believe in being taxed on my cable bill by paying for networks that I do not watch. I would like to subscribe to cable or satellite and pay for only the channels that I do watch. As it is, I never watch MTV or three quarters of the channels that I am forced to subscribe to, but I pay for all this trash. I would like to see some of these trashy channels survive in a free unsubsidized market. Hey, you boys and girls in the Republican Party who tow the free trade line, why don't you make cable and satellite and unsubsidized marketplace? Could it be that the babblings of Mr. Nader have some truth in them and politicians serve their corporate masters before they serve those who elect them?

They want us dead because they are uncivilized murderous barbarians. They don't respect life, not even their own. Don't forget that.

One of the IslamoFascist repeated claims is that America is the decadent Great Satan, hell bent on destroying the morals of the world, and which must be (therefore) utterly destroyed.

Thank you Viacom, for creating another million or so new IslamoFascist recruits with one fell swoop. The mad mullahs also have only to show any random 10 minutes of MTV, and there are new suicide bombers lining up to destroy America.

I hope you enjoy the ten million dollars you made on your half-time show. Oh and thanks also for your recent hatchet job on Reagan.

I totally agree with you. My husband and I pay for 100+ channels and watch about 10 regularly. Why am I forced to subsidize trash like MTV on my DishTV bill? I would be willing to change my satellite service to any carrier who would let me select the channels I want, and I would even be willing to pay more per channel to do so. Are you listening, Rupert Murdock?

To the people at work that said they had no problem with any of the half-time acts, I replied that I don't want to hear them whine about AIDS research or money for fatherless children and single moms living in the ghetto.

This is an excellent point. The children in a poorly supervised home are fed a constant barrage of this bilge and are therefore more likely to engage in dangerous practices at a young age. The human damage resulting from this is incalculable.

At what point does the media become accountable? This is an industry where Howard "fart joke" Stern is the arbiter of taste.

The public airwaves have been kidnapped by morally bankrupt individuals who have no qualms broadcasting disgusting and dispicable depravity. They have turned the public square into an open sewer. And are quite proud of themselves!

Perhaps the executives of Viacom will allow me to into their homes and wave my genitals at THEIR children.

All of the porn stuff aside for a moment, exactly what is the appeal of recording artists "grabbing" their crotches while belting out their tunes and having a bunch of half-naked dancers all around them bumping and grinding in some kind of really weird choreographed manner? I mean, think of the hours they must practice this kind of stuff. Don't they have to pay all those "dancers"? What do they add to the musical performance that makes it worth the huge amount of money it must cost to put such a production together? And what about the grabbing of the crotch by the main performer? How does that add to the music? Maybe somebody out there can explain that to me. I find it disgusting and repugnant. But others apparently think it is very entertaining. Is there anybody here who thinks that grabbing the crotch during a performance is entertaining and is there anybody here who comes away from a pop concert disappointed because the main performer didn't have scores of half-naked dancers in leather straps and buckles bumping and grinding? I really would like to know.

Speaking of MTV, I was an early fan of the "music video" back in the early 1980s when this whole thing (with videos) got started. Back then, videos were mostly fun to watch. Then, around the time of Michael Jackson's Thriller album, the videos started getting really weird, with those choreographed half-naked dancers bumping and grinding. I think it was Michael Jackson that started the "crotch-grabbing" phenomenon as well. Really weird stuff. What do people see in that?

I used to go to rock concerts when I was young. I'd see The Cars, Jackson Browne, U2 (when they were just a young Irish band and Bono was not yet trying to save the world), Molly Hatchet, REO Speedwagon - those were a few of the bands I remember seeing. All these acts had pretty good songs and they played straight ahead rock and roll. No half-naked dancers bumping and grinding. No crotch-grabbing. No kids "moshing" up front. I feel so...innocent.

Yup...this fish stinks from the head and if Redstone didn't enjoy debasing our culture he could put an immediate stop to it with just one word.....he hasn't.

I'd like to hear him give a full accounting before a congressional commitee of the infamous "Shower Rangers" bit where unsuspecting young teens were defacated on by Redstone's "entertainers".....that would be a nice start to expose just what a simeball this guy.

I'll give the Muslims a bit of respect for not wanting America to stove its "culture" down their throats under the ruse of "liberating" them.

The same folks who produce this trash are generally the ones who hate W and are against the War on Terroism. At the same time, those who want us dead, want us dead because of the folks who produce this trash.

The subculture [which is more and more prominent in the US] which hates W hates and the War, and wants our foreign policy U-turned into a globalist erasure of national boundaries and all that makes America distinctive, also wants W's tax hikes to fail and people to lose jobs so W will not be re-elected. This crowd also directs the media and the entertainment industries. Their direction is aimed at an essential part of the same agenda: undermining the sesne of masculinity in young men so that self-control and the transcendance of sensual and sexual impulses is marginalized. This is why Heffner and the playboy philosophy was always intrincsically related to the leftward tilt in politics. [This is the real reason for the assault against men meeting in private, witness the attack on the boy scouts, private clubs, etc. The whole point is to destroy masculine identity. This is why the all-boys school has been eliminated. Even the supposed champions of the blacks will not allow an all boys school in the ghetto. The left fears masculine purpose and identity above all else. This is why it tries to smear any meeting of men as potentially homosexual. The left's use of homosexuality is a large topic. ]

[ A distraction which obscures seeing this is the fact that healthy masculine sexuality, of course, involves the exercise of sensuality and sexuality. It is the loss of self and purpose in sensual excess that the playboy philosophy (and the leftist counterculture's attack on western purpose, especially transcending purposes) espouses as the new "ideal". ]

The complicated fact here is that the trend of western civilization has in recent modernity been engaged in a self-critique of its purposes, which has cut the moorings out from under much of the ordinary [institutional] cultural guidelines. This chaotic usurpation of masculine purpose appears to the Islamist as a destructive and sinful exhibition. From the simple-minded Islamist point of view, this is why the West should be destroyed. Accordingly, the West's cultural influence is the most alarming and terrible thing that could happen.

Regretfully, the West's self-critique has been subject to being appropriated and subverted by the post-modernist [leftist] fakirs who have captured the western academic structure. Nonetheless, the critical impulse of the west is its only salvation. This fact creates a terrible tension between the traditionalists [of both Islamist and Christian culture] and the critical rationalists. Largely, the traditionalists want to take the fruit of an earlier age of rationalist spiritual inquiry and solidify those fruits by a mistaken intolerance to critique. The post-modernists [essentially leftist] try to opportunistically profit off of the clash of tradition and modernity and cynically cheer chaos in all its forms. This is why the left paradoxically supports the Palestinians, the Jihadists and the totalitarians of every stripe--who would instantly wipe out the left if they had power.

This is the underlying basis for the paradox which is described in the post. The terrorists hate us for our cultural left which hates us for warring on the terrorists. The left hates this war, most of all, because it and W as its symbol, represent a restoration of masculine purpose. That purpose is of debatable depth, however, and the depth of the restoration is open to the same question. In any case, the left knows what it must fear. That is why the commercials at the super bowl, and of course more widely, continually undermine men and have these almost obligatory shots to the male crotch and references to toilet paper and other bowel functions [ these delinquents are always pushing their limits, witness the horse fart]. These aims of the left often hook up with and subvert other unrelated movements: liberalism, feminism, civil rights, legal reform, ....

There are no perfect vehicles in this world and W is certainly not perfect. However, we do need to recognize what's what and where the essential forces are. The left will use any instrument of confusion to evoke chaos. Hence the media is its most useful and most cynical weapon. The attacks are never consistent and do not need to be. A thousand cuts are its goal. Thus the left would never change course if you were to show it that the terrorists would line them up first if they were to win. Individuals, of course, are a different story than any abstration such as "the left". But individuals have many motives and rational self-critique [and thereby, self-knowledge] is usually not a very strong motive.

Crotch grabbing was a behavioral tic common to young, criminal black men living in big-city slums at least as far back as the second half of the sixties. When I was in San Francisco during that period, I used to see it a lot among such residents of the Fillmore slum.

"Interesting. I wonder why."

If you want to look at the spiritual side of it - America is/was a Christian nation. This country sends out the most missionaries to the world. This "world" hates Jesus. According to scripture, once the world has heard the gospel Satan's time is up. If you can corrupt the youth, you have the next generation of adults. "Men" were created in God's image which Satan also hates. If our sexuality becomes perverted as the norm there will be fewer adults who are still fertile due to STD's and fewer families staying intact.

It has no business on TV. Of course, discount the dozens of shows that revolve around soft porn and tasteless, talentless, bad writing jokes.

The one and only time I ever watched Sienfeld, it had a character on there who had urinated in the men's communal shower at a health club. He was confronted by another patron of the club who saw him. Sienfeld was defending him.

After about five minutes of wondering why there was a laugh track for this, I changed the channel and told Mrs. Theknow that I was just too old for network television because in my wildest imagination I couldn't picture Ricky Ricardo defending Fred Mertz or Ralph Kramden defending Ed Norton or Rob Petrie defending Buddy Sorrel or Andy defending Barney for pissing in the shower at a men's health club.

After watching the Super Bowl as we were driving home, I reminded her of this and said after seeing the halftime and some of the commercials for the game that I had not gotten any younger.
