It may be high time for an "auto-excerpt" feature, unfortunately.

I wasn't very clear. I meant that when someone posts an exerpt from a Krauthammer column, he or she should put the link to the non-WP source in the "URL" block on the posting page. Example:
Source: townhall.com (not Washington Post)

Source URL: http://www.townhall.com/blahblahblah (not the Washington Post URL)

That way townhall.com gets the hits on their website, not the WP.

Yes, thanks! I realize I can post them that way.

I also understand the desire to keep a record here because so many news sources archive but I note the list of objecting sites is getting longer and will probably continue to grow.

Guess, I'll just play it safe.

I agree, I'd rather see townhall get hits that WP. It's all up to how you want to do it.

Is it correct, that when we see an article which may be in another newspaper, which is not on the above list, but it's a copy of say a Washington Post article, we need to excerpt that too -- basically anything which references any of the companies listed above?

E.g. Charles Krauthammer articles appear in townhall.com, but it mentions it's from the WP, then we need to excerpt it, right, because it shows at the bottom of the article, that it's copywrited by the WP.

Yeah, but it's still better to excerpt from Townhall than WP, so that we don't have to log in when chasing the link.

Also, I've noticed on a few occasions that if a WP article is posted from the "Printer ready" version at the WP site, their anti-FR filter doesn't seem to catch the redirect, and you don't have to log in.

Instead of having the users bookmark this, perhaps you could link it as a reference from the FR homepage. That way the new users could know this information too.

It would be helpful to provide some warning in the posting template, at the block marked "Source," where it now says only: "Source -- The name of the source (example: The Washington Times)". Then we'd have a reminder of this when we're posting a new article.

Yesterday we had a thread with an article by John Lott.

It was published by the LATimes as an op-ed.

A poster found and posted a link (but not the text) to Lott's own site which contained the same material and bearing the notice/link that it had been published by LATimes as well.

Apparently, Lott retains ownership and LAT simply published it as an op-ed.

Since it was not exclusive to LATimes and Lott retains ownership, it is still proper to post an alternative link, actually the original and permanent link, to the same material, isn't it?

I don't want to increase LAT/WP ad revenue by clicking through if the material is available elsewhere. And I'd rather click through to Lott to help him instead of LATimes.

It's always seemed a little strange to me that any organization in the news business wants to cut down on the number of their readers.

They want you to read it off of their site. Traffic = dollars for them. That's reasonable.

The link to the judgement is there, but it is difficult to wade through. I was thinking that right next to it there could be a link to the list above titled "Here are the publications which must be excerpted." This would make it easy for everyone down the line to follow the rules correctly. After all only the die-hards are going to see this post on a Saturday morning!

My point exactly. Not everything that's printed in LATimes, especially op-eds, are actually owned by them.

I'll never give them a hit. If they want Mr. Lott's material exclusively, then pay him for exclusive rights!

Here is the DU guidance:

Don't post entire copyrighted articles. If you wish to reference an article, provide a brief excerpt and include a link to the original source. Generally, excerpts should not exceed three or four paragraphs.

So if we do a bit of selective excerpting in the original post, and those who reply are judicious about quoting, the gist of the article can be posted without violating the agreements 'rules'..

Thanks..

Here's a valuable resource for those interested in copyright and fair use:

Stanford University Copyright and Fair Use Overview

http://fairuse.stanford.edu/Copyright_and_Fair_Use_Overview/index.html

Many other college and university Web sites also cover copyright in order to provide guidelines for their students.

Finally, I would urge everybody to read the Free Republic Terms of Use Agreement.

My conclusion is that the only safe course is to excerpt everything except that which is obviously in the public domain.
