Clarity sought on Great Lakes (Kerry gaffe on Great Lakes diversion issue)

Front-running Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry told a Free Press reporter Tuesday that Great Lakes water diversion issues require a "delicate balancing act" to provide for "national needs."

Twenty-four hours later, his Michigan campaign spokesman, Mark Kornblau, said the Massachusetts senator's position on shipping water out of the Great Lakes is "unequivocal."

Two points --

1. Kerry himself did not amend his comments.

2. For Kerry not to realize that this is such a major issue is unbelievable.

As recently as 1998, a Canadian company won approval to send tankers full of 158 million gallons of Lake Superior water annually to drought-stricken Asian countries. When public uproar ensued on both sides of the border, the Canadian government revoked the permit.

That is about what flows down the St. Mary's river in twenty minutes. It seems to me that there is a valuable resource that could be sold in small amounts for a goodly amount of money.

If someone wants Great Lakes water, they're free to move to a Great Lakes state. Otherwise, forget it.

Exactly!! And what does that say about Keryy who doesn't understand how deeply this issue is to those who live around the Great Lakes??

The Lakes are currently down 19 inches. That is up an inch from last year but it is far to much. We are hoping with good snowfalls to see them rise another six inches but that still is over a foot below normal. Until the Lakes are back at their normal levels we should leave them alone as much as possible.

The Lakes bring in a lot of revenue just by being. And rebuilding all those docks is going to cost a bundle if the level continues to fall.

If they were at normal level or over I would agree with you

Most of the steamships on the Great Lakes are carrying short loads because of low water. The US Coast Guard granted an extension of the navigation season in January but USS Great Lakes Fleet's Edgar Speer ran aground in the St. Marys and effectively cancelled the extra days for everybody else.

It is effecting property values too. My cabin is now worth much less now. That area of the river used to be great for fishing and boating. Now it is too shallow. I have to portage in areas where I never had to before and the dock is worthless. You jump off into the mud basically

Which is why I am not complaining about the snow this year. Every flake is precious. Except for that Lake effect stuff. Totally worthless. Should stay in the Lake where it belongs!

Could be... huh!

There's enough water in Lake Tahoe to cover the entire central valley one foot deep with water!!!

That makes sense - that any sale of water would be allowed only when there was a surplus of water going down the St. Marys.

My wife and I and another couple sailed from Two Harbors to Rouge Steel several years ago aboard an Interlake steamer. I noticed the boat sort of "bumped along" when we went upriver into the Ford Works.
Where the heck is all the water going ? Is there less rainfall and drainage coming out of Boundry Waters ?

And who's going to say what normal levels are?? Great Lakes water levels change every day. There is an annual cycle of lake levels. There is NO constant average lake level. Never was one.

No way, no how -- not one drop. Let the International treaty of 1909 stand forever.

finally someone with a post that provided some understanding of what is the reason for people to complain.

if texas had as much water as michigan we would all be laughing. there is only one NATURAL LAKE in this state, so learning to live with impound water is part of our life. you are so lucky.

Kerry doesn't have a clue about the Great Lakes--especially if he thinks we're going to give up our water without a HUGE fight. He was probably all for making Lake Champlain a Great Lake, too.

My understanding is that we have had too many dry winters. We need wet air blowing up from the south and heavy snows that aren't Lake effect.

Lake Superior dropped a bit in 2003 compared with 2002, but ice cover, lower temperatures and increasing precipitation are generally bringing the Great Lakes up from low water levels.

Lake Superior started 2003 about 7 inches below the long-term normal for January and ended the year about 9 inches below normal for December. Those numbers are not out of the statistical norm and near the level listed on navigation charts.

Last fall's storms in the region and recent snowfall from storms that started outside the region -- not just lake-effect snow -- also add encouragement for coming months and a return to more normal temperatures.

Lakes Huron and Michigan began 2003 about 20 inches below normal for January and ended the year 18 inches low for December, about the same as 2002. Lakes Erie and Ontario closed the gap about 2 inches toward normal.

"There has been a significant improvement on Michigan and Huron... and that's because we had reduced evaporation," Marie Strum, chief of the watershed hydrology branch of the Corps, said Monday. "We had a very extensive ice cover last winter and that remained until early spring, which kept the water temperatures lower."

The latest decline in lake levels began about 1997, said Cynthia Sellinger, a hydrologist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Great Lakes Environmental Research lab. Sellinger said it may take years for the lakes to all return to average levels.

This is an outstanding catch - thank you for this. It's just as big an issue here in the northern part of Minnesota. Of course, just one problem with the concept of selling water has to do with much of the Great Lakes adjoining Canada. Whose water is it, anyway?

Thanks for this post. Bumping and bookmarking.

That Lake Champlain issue was met with a lot of sneers here in MI, but it certainly would add fuel to this fire.

Grahnholm's Canadian butt is in the sling. She's made it well know she's going after groundwater quality and increased enforcement of drainfield and septic tank inspections, and now this? This is an issue the voters here won't let her gloss over.

I'm bumping this back up because there's been -- guess what -- a MAJOR KERRY WAFFLE! I sent the same information along to Sean Hannity at his website.

This appeared in a 3/09/04 interview with Gov. Jennifer Granholm (D, of course):

Q: Great Lakes water diversion. Sen. Kerry's response seemed to leave doors open. What's your reaction and have you talked to his campaign?

A: Oh yes. First of all, no candidate can come into Michigan without being very strong on the issue of diversion. There's no way, no how, will any candidate come into Michigan and survive if they're interested in diverting water. John Kerry issued a statement immediately following that which said no way, no how, over my dead body will I allow diversion out of the Great Lakes, the day following, that was on a Friday I remember it very well. I was pleased to see he issued that statement.

Q: Does that settle the issue?

A: It should settle the issue because he's made very clear that he does not believe that Great Lakes water should be diverted under any circumstances. I would not be endorsing a candidate who equivocated on that.
