Need some help for a bake sale

Posted on 02/10/2004 8:03:09 PM PST by Raymann

The Univ. of Rochester's College Republicans, of which I'm a member, have decided to hold an affirmative action bake sale in a few weeks. Now I support this, even more so because I'm black but what I don't want is for this to turn ugly. My usual way for dealing with confrontations with crazed liberals is to get up in their face but I'm doing the protesting this time so thats not an option unless they force it. Also, as the only Black Republican there, I'm going to get most of the attention. I can hold my own for any arguments but thats not going to matter for some people. So what can I do? Your suggestions would be appreciated.

Try to spend as much time at the table itself.

At my college, my college republicans are too scared to do it, although I keep pushing them at our meetings.

Do I understand you to be saying that you will be joining a a pro affirmative action bake sale being held by liberals? You may have confrontations with more than liberals.

Yeah, you're gonna get all the attention, as well as all the abuse. Whatever they throw at you, stay above it. You're better than they are ... but you already know that.

Those affirmative-action bake sales are the best. Are you aware that FIRE (Fndtn for Individual Rights in Education/ http://www.thefire.org ) has helped several groups who did this and ran into legal trouble/ trouble with the Administration. i think it's a hoot, and more power to you. All you have to do is use logic, it will blow all the arguments away. They'll yell at you, of course, but -- I have learned that hearts do NOT burst from your chest, no matter how scary a situation is. The Truth will set you (and them) free. Have fun.

People who get in your face and accuse and shout are trying to get you to argue (or shout back) on their terms. On their arguments. Don't fall for it.

Don't get sucked into answering their accusations or charges. You'll be playing their game on their playing-field. If they out-shout you, hold up cards that make your point. They'll have to stop and read them or knock them out of your hand (assault).

Your cards could say, Your Shouting Time Is Now Up. Or,Go Away, Take Prozac, And Put It In Writing. Or, If You Keep Screaming I will Call animal Control. Etc.

Good luck, you're going to deserve a Purple Heart after this. Report back!

First of all, congratulations on having the strength of character to stand up on this issue. You are a true blue American!

I would suggest this - to consider the core message you want to convey - and then to formulate some canned responses that convey that message. You might talk about wanting to "stand on your own two feet" or "not settling for the crumbs off the Socialist table" or maybe "I can compete with any white man here". If you project your own pride and sense of self-worth, then I think your message will be driven home. Just remember to stay positive and not stray into negativism.

Good luck!

Courageous. Like the "coming out" of conservatives at another college, which I think I read on FreeRepublic earlier this week. It's impossible to win the debate. In my opinion, taking the heat successfully and getting through it with some sort of disarming humor is the best approach. If you take the bait and there's a confrontation, you automatically lose -- at least in the eyes of the campus newspaper the next day. You succeed not by winning the debate, but by rolling with the punches and not allowing provocation to turn into a scene. Of course, I probably have no business trying to answer the question, as a fifty-year-old white lawyer who is a long way from the reality of campus life as it is today.

Both of you are apparently 100% clueless w/ regard to what an AA bake sale is.

Have somebody videotape the event from a safe vantage point, in case things go bad.

Understand going in that you'll be the main target. Be on your best behavior and don't let them bait you. There are good suggestions for signs and decorum here. Follow them. The signs will help you maintain your cool. God speed.

If they get into your face, apologize and then charge them double what you would charge a regular white guy.

Apparently you aren't familiar with the "affirmative action" bake sales.

Here is more info about what they are. Please read it, then you can apologize to Raymann.

"'Affirmative-action bake sale' restored
Around the nation, a number of similar protests by conservative campus groups have been shut down after raising the ire of school officials and some students. At Southern Methodist University in Dallas, for example, a bake sale was shut down after the Young Conservatives of Texas posted a sign saying white males had to pay $1 for a cookie. White women, on the other hand, were charged 75 cents. It was 50 cents for Hispanics and 25 cents for blacks.
http://worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=36902

The idea of an "affirmative action" bake sale is to demonstrate how unfair affirmative action is. Admitting blacks or women with lower scores to a university, is not different, than selling them the same cookie at a lower price, except more so.

These "affirmative action bake sales" are really a protest AGAINST affirmative action.

Congratulations for taking part.

I think you need to go in with a very firm frame of mind, to NOT raise your voice, no matter what the provocation, speak softly, and don't under any circumstances do any shoving, again, no matter what the provocation. Stand back, be confident, firm, but softspoken.

There will be people trying to provoke you, so they can blame you for starting a disturbance and shut you down. Don't allow them to do it.

Just ask them sweetly, do they really think that blacks, Hispanics, etc. aren't as smart as white people, because that is what affirmative action says. You are the one standing for the future of Black people, that they learn that they can indeed compete, without taking cut price cookies in life.

Good luck. Stay cool. :)

And if you need some *dough* for your cause don't be surprized if the place smells of a yeast fart for awhile.

Sometimes the cure is worse than the disease, kudos.
