Agenda item: profits.

The board is calling in Fiorini to announce the latest plan to boost company revenues.

"Carly, you've done remarkable things . . . but we can find someone else cheaper. We have decided to outsource your job overseas. CEOs in Japan earn a fraction of your salary."

Mr Heintz makes some good points, especially about the reliance of these corporations on the economic and military strength of the USA. Too bad that neither Mr Heintz, nor apparently anyone at the SacBee knows how to spell the HP CEO's name. It's Fiorina.

Also, corporate greed does not negate the need for a serious retooling of the public education system. The achievement of US students, especially in science and math, has been trailing that of other nations for years and the gap is increasing.

Ever notice how, when the CEO goes on vacation, they do not bring in a substitute? However, if the janitor goes on vacation, they have to find a replacement.

When in doubt, blame education. Yet wasn't it that same woeful education system that trained the talent that created our tech revolution - that made offshoring possible? Blaming the school system is simply an attempt to deflect any real discussion of the long-term consequences of offshoring.

They're running out of excuses...

Yep those companies should not be allowed to spend their money as they see fit.

By the same token shoppers should not be allowed to spend their money where they see fit either.

The government will tell companies what services they will buy, and they will assign consumers to certain grocery stores, (to protect the grocery workers), and to make everyone happy - no one will be allowed to shop at Wal-Mart, or any regional shopping center that hurts a Mom and Pop business. Of course shopping on the net is out, and Autoworkers need help...

My kids want to study engineering. Trying to get them to be plumbers. Can't ship that out.

My sister in law works for HP. Fiorina is HATED in that company.

I can tell you in the twenty years I worked as an EE for Fortune 500 companies, I NEVER had trouble finding qualified engineers. Just had to pay them what the market commanded.

There IS no shortage. Despite the dumming down of public education there are MANY good people available. But if this keeps up there won't be for long.

This shortage is a MYTH and terribly destructive.

It might be a better article if Ms. Fiorina's name was spelled correctly. Making a fundamental spelling mistake twenty times tends to undermine an author's credibility.
