$100,000 to kill Rushdie

TEHRAN: An Iranian extremist Islamic group calling itself the General Staff for the Glorification of Martyrs of the Islamic World has offered a $100,000 (BD37,800) reward for the killing of British novelist Salman Rushdie, a Press report said yesterday.

According to the hardline Jomhuri Eslami newspaper, the tiny and little-known group called on "all volunteer Muslims to sign up on its Internet site... to kill Salman Rushdie."

"The reward will be paid to anyone who kills Salman Rushdie or his family," the paper said, quoting a member of the group who also pledged the organisation's facilities to help with the operation.

The novelist, born in Bombay, India, to a Muslim family, sparked fury from Muslims worldwide a decade ago because of alleged blasphemy and apostasy in his novel The Satanic Verses.

The new reward marked the anniversary of the fatwa, or religious edict, issued by Iran's revolutionary founder, the late Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, on February 14, 1989 calling for Rushdie's execution.

What truth did Rushdie write to so infuriate the members of the religion of peace?

Not again?!

Y'know, we all should've picked up on this in the eighties when they first put out their fatwahs on this guy.

Don't tell anyone. But I think we're finally on to them.

IIRC the original fatwa was for $1,000,000.back in the 80's. Maybe outsourcing is putting the old jihadis out of business /sarcasm/

Yeah. I'd like to know what this book was about also. Have to go to Amazon. This news will spark a second printing, probably.

Is there a fatwa registry? You might have one on ya and not know it.

These things are gettin to be like restraining orders...everybody's either declaring one, or having one put on them.

Mebbe it's developing into 'fatwa chic'.

Rough translation of Salman Rushdie:

'He who is in a rush to die.' [SNL/D. Miller]

Again?

Still. And with their typical ineptitude, they've had this hit going for 15 years. And now, they've finally raised $100,000 selling Allah Akbar cookies door to door and raffling off sexy burkahs to sweeten this dusty old pot. Salman'll die of old age before the wrath of Allah gets him.

Just wanted to add what little I know, for those who don't already know, and for those who would like to add to it. Singer Cat Stevens, who later became Muslim and changed his name to Yusuf Islam, has made public statements at least twice in support of this fatwa. I'm having a hard time finding a link to his statements. I keep getting Yusef Islam sponsored sites and others that put his spin on it. There are several statements by him, attempting to backpedal from his original statements. That makes it really hard to sift through everything to get the meat. This one's not bad http://www.nytimes.com/books/99/04/18/specials/rushdie-cat.html. Maybe somebody else can provide a better one.

Actually there is. One Islamofascist group took a liberal's deck of "evil conservatives" and used that as the basis for a hitlist.
