She was suffering from the early stages of Alzheimers Disease, and walked with a cane. She should not have been in the nursing home. Her children let her down. I cared for my grandmother until she was 96 and fell in our home and broke both her hips(pins placed in both at that time). She was placed in a nursing home after she was stabilized. She was in late dementia and I had two young children to care for as well. She lingered in the home for a little over a year and passed in her sleep. She was notorious for escaping. She somehow found the strength to walk again. I figured at this point she could not feel physical pain or forgot she was in pain. She would get out of her bed the wheelchair you name it. You are not allowed to restrain nursing home patients. You can put an alarm on them but they are famous for removing them. There is some law against it. From all we hear about nursing home care I hope to take care of my mother in law if need be to avoid such. I will hire a fulltime nurse need be to avoid a nursing home for her. This family should be ashamed that not one of them could take her in with her minimul needs.

Thamks for telling about your feisty grandmother, and I agree that Lillie Gardner's family let her down.

But consider that when a family suffers the tragic death of a member, the survivors typically are too broken up initially to talk to any journalists. By contrast, Bishop Sidney Gardner couldnt shut up. It sounds like Sidney didn't care too much about his mom until he saw the possibility in a big lawsuit. The smell of money is bringing out a love he never knew before.

She should not have been in the nursing home. Her children let her down
I take offense at this we spent the last 5 years taking caring of my in-laws both with Alzheimer's and a long list of other health issues, both eventually ended up in a nursing home after we simply could not provide the medical care they needed and deserved. We as children knew that is was the best we could do for them was to put them in a nursing facility that could provide what we could not. We researched every place in the area before being placed and visited and asked many many questions before placing them in the home. We did not abandon them once they were there someone was there every single day and talked with the nurses on duty to find out what was being done for them.
Bless you for being able to take care of someone, but with some Alzheimer's patients being just disoriented is only part of the problem add in being violent, sexual predator and paranoia and you will reach a limit to which you cannot handle without professional help

"
consider that when a family suffers the tragic death of a member, the survivors typically are too broken up initially to talk to any journalists. By contrast, Bishop Sidney Gardner couldnt shut up." What an idiot... It is clear this jerk has never had to deal with an elderly loved one who suffers from Alzheimer's or old-age dementia. The family suffers the pain of watching them slip away over such a long period that when death finally comes, there is as much relief (for them mostly) as there is grief over their loss. The family has had a long time to prepare for the death, so are not "broken up" as with a sudden, unexpected death.
"she raised her children such that they knew that it was wrong for them to have dumped her in a nursing home [so they transferred their guilt onto the nursing home]."
Not every home is suitably equipped or designed for old people who (eg) cannot climb stairs, etc, and not every person is skilled enough or physically able to attend to the needs of their elderly loved ones. There is always guilt after any type of death, and people agonize over those things they should, and should not, have done or said. WHile this famly probably does have some guilt over putting their mother in a nursing home, the person who wrote this article does not have any inside knowledge of this family's situation, feelings, thoughts, etc. What a sickening article.
