Makers of Astro-Turf Going Out of Business

The makers of AstroTurf have filed for Chapter Eleven bankruptcy protection and reportedly will soon go out of business.

The filing by Southwest Recreational Industries marks the climax of a long decline for the Leander, Texas-based company that once dominated the artificial turf industry.

The bankruptcy casts uncertainty over projects scheduled across the country -- including a turf replacement at the Metrodome in Minneapolis.

In its bankruptcy filing, the Austin-area company says it'll sell two small divisions that make portable sports flooring and equipment for volleyball, gymnastics and basketball.

Otherwise, S-R-I says it'll discontinue business in the next few weeks after it finishes projects already begun.

AstroTurf was developed for the Astrodome in 1966 by the Monstanto Company. S-R-I bought AstroTurf Industries in 1994 from the bankrupt Balsam Corporation in Saint Louis

Astro-turf goes the way of the buggy whip. Another icon of the 70's disappears.

Apparently demand dropped off after Bill Clinton sold his El Camino...

Oh my! What will white trash around the great American landscape use on their front porches without "Astroturf"?

I'm buying a whole bunch up now, so that I'll have it for my flocks of pink flamingoes. They will stand on nothing else.

LOL! Kerry is trying to make the statements he made about the military and veterans in the 70's to disappear, even though he still believes what he said in the 70's.

As for astro-turf, I say good riddance. Carter, astro-turf, and ABBA were the blight of the 70's.

Speaking at a General Motors plant in Shreveport, La., Clinton talked about that pickup back in Arkansas. "When I was a younger man and had a life, I owned an El Camino pickup in the '70s. It was a real sort of Southern deal. I had Astroturf in the back. You don't want to know why, but I did."

End of an era indeed.

Astroturf? You know who's responsible for that, don't you?! The Jews! Ah, the Jews hate grass. They always have, they always will.

Not that there is anything wrong with that....!

Well, great!

If it weren't for Astroturf, Pete Rose would have actually never been considered for any accolades or The Hall of Fame!

Punkely, banjo-hitter, slimeball, gambling weenie, Pete Rose had so many of his dribblers up into the outfield gaps turned from regular singles into doubles and triples because of Astroturf!

Far out!

Pete, you and Astroturf are PAST TENSE!!!!!

What a shame. Artificial turf was a nice thing for baseball, albeit not as good as the designated hitter.

Don't remind me...man, those cookie-cutter stadiums of the 70's with astro-turf were the worst...

My son and I went to PNC back 2001 and saw Tony Gwynn play, fun time there...

There are other companies that make an artificial turf playing-field surface - but not by the trade name of AstroTurf. I b'lieve the field in Tejas Stadium in Irving is made by one such company. There will always be a market for the stuff...

Not to mention leisure suits, disco, the Bee Gees, Captain and Tenille, and fondue.

"Makers of Astro-Turf Going Out of Business"

Headline should read:
Makers of Astro-Turf Going Out of Business George Bush found to be the reason. He sent the company to India and it went to HECK in a hand basket.
