Daley on gay marriage: 'no problem'
Chicago Sun-Times ^ | February 19, 2004 | Fran Spielman

Posted on 02/19/2004 5:37:36 AM PST by Rutles4Ever

Mayor Daley said Wednesday he would have "no problem" with County Clerk David Orr issuing marriage licenses to gay couples -- and Orr said he's open to a San Francisco-style protest if a consensus can be built.

"They're your doctors, your lawyers, your journalists, your politicians," the mayor said. "They're someone's son or daughter. They're someone's mother or father. . . . I've seen people of the same sex adopt children, have families. [They're] great parents.

"Some people have a difference of opinion -- that only a man and a woman can get married. But in the long run, we have to understand what they're saying. They love each other just as much as anyone else.''

A devout Catholic, Daley scoffed at the suggestion that gay marriage would somehow undermine the institution of marriage between a man and a woman.

"Marriage has been undermined by divorce, so don't tell me about marriage. You're not going to lecture me about marriage. People should look at their own life and look in their own mirror. Marriage has been undermined for a number of years if you look at the facts and figures on it. Don't blame the gay and lesbian, transgender and transsexual community. Please don't blame them for it," he said.

Daley said he has no control over marriage licenses in Cook County. But if Orr wants to take that bold step, the mayor has no problem with it.

Orr said he was "game to looking at options" provided a consensus could be built.

"I'm fed up with people being discriminated against because of their sexual orientation. We can't even pass a law that eliminates discrimination against gay couples. [But] whatever you do when it comes to challenging laws, you want it to be effective and not knee-jerk," Orr said.

The clerk noted the protest that has gay couples from around the nation lining up for hours outside San Francisco's City Hall was meticulously planned.

It wasn't just "the clerk waking up one day and deciding to marry someone," Orr said. It had the support of the entire "city apparatus" in San Francisco -- from the mayor, City Council and advocacy groups on down. That's the model that would have to be followed here, Orr said.

"Whether or not, here in Cook County, we should be considering a San Francisco or other kind of protest, that is what some of us are discussing. I'm quite interested in exploring that with key players in the city and county. I'm already discussing that with a number of advocacy and key groups. I would like to discuss it with the mayor," Orr said.

State law says same-sex marriage is contrary to public policy. It recognizes only a marriage between a man and a woman.

Daley and Orr are going farther than gay activists are willing to go on the issue of gay marriage.

Ald. Tom Tunney (44th), Chicago's first openly gay alderman, said his top legislative priority is to pass Senate Bill 101 prohibiting statewide discrimination against gays and lesbians in housing and employment.

"We're putting the cart before the horse. We have to get to that step first and then we move incrementally," Tunney said.

Rick Garcia, political director of Equality Illinois, applauded Daley for taking the lead on the explosive issue of gay marriage. "No one can accuse Mayor Daley of being some left-wing pinko. ... It means a lot. It sets a tone."

Last fall, the county board authorized Orr to issue certificates of domestic partnership that carry no legal rights. Garcia believes it's time for Orr to take it a step further and issue marriage license to gay couples. But he's not about to "initiate anything at this point" with a formal protest.

I'm sure the cardinal does not want the faithful (shaped as they are by MTV rather than the gospel) to accuse him of being "mean," so the devout-Catholic stuff will probably stand--just as it has stood for the Kennedys all these years. If it does not, of course, that would be a sign that times have changed, but I'm not holding my breath.

More and more I'm happy I live down South. We've got our nuts here too, but they're far outnumbered by decent, God-fearing, down-to-earth folks. If Memphis or Nashville or Atlanta tried this crap, the ordinary folks would be all over them like white on rice.

I really hate to say it though, but I really feel this should be a state issue and not a federal one. As with most things in our everyday life, I feel that if they're going to be regulated at all by government it should be by the local consensus and not by a dictate from D.C.

I despise the sin of homosexuality and wish to see it eliminated from the face of the earth, but the only way to remove it from our country is for ordinary Christians like me to take a stand in our own lives and spread the gospel of Christ to those who are lost in this or other sorts of sin.

Chicago is like a Caribbean dictatorship. Yes we have laws but the dictator Daley still does what he wants. Allegations of his former treasury secretary of irregular business dealings gets a big shrug from the peasants. If Fidel Daley's wife wants to own a house where Meigs field is, he sends in bulldozers at 11:00pm on Sunday to start tearing up the runways. He took some political heat for, oh maybe, 2 days for that. The city council had to sign off on that.

Now Col. Daley says gays can marry. That's as good as an edict. Next week the Chicago city hall will look alot like San Francisco's.

Yeah, don't be too quick to judge Atlanta as a city that wouldn't tolerate homosexual "marriage."

There really isn't many parts of this country that aren't wallowing in the cesspool of indecency and immorality.

This country is going straight to hell, and the South is hardly immune.

I'm not saying the South (especially Atlanta) is immune to such filth. Atlanta tolerates a lot of crap. What I'm saying is that if our elected officials tried this stuff, the local electorate in the South would have their political hides.

We're not like San Franciscans quite yet. There are still enough decent ones of us here to shut them down if they try it.

Apparently Newsom in SF forced his clerks to issue the marriage licences to the gays.

I wonder what would've happened to a clerk who refused to do because it would be illegal.

BRIGHT, the guy talks like he has a fifth grade education. Back when his father was Mayor it was cute if you were an uneducated neighborhood politician. Now ... it is not so cute anymore, except in Chicago.

Is anyone hearing this? First they demean marriage as an institution then demand that it be extended to sexual deviants. I feel like I've fallen down the rabbit hole. Only a few years ago a major elected official the publicly said such things would be run out of office.

I heard the same argument from some gay guy that just married his partner of 25 years. Something like: Marriage is a worthless institution but we want the approval of our fellow citizens for our relationships.

No marriage and no approval!

The person does make a good point, but reaches the wrong conclusion. The state of marriage is very bad, and whether or not homosexuals bear significant blame the fact remains that opening the floodgates would make the already precarious state of marriage worse.

BTW, on a vaguely related note, one thing I'd like to see churches doing is taking heed of the lesson of the prodigal son. Rather than trying to weaken church standards to avoid losing sinners, the church should instead work to make known that its standards are firm but that sinners will be welcomed back when they decide to change their ways.

I would expect that for many people, a life without God may seem fine for years or even decades, but that eventually they'll realize they need something they're not getting. The church needs to welcome such people.
