Girl Spanked in Front of Classmates at High School
Associated Press ^ | February 24, 2004

Posted on 02/24/2004 10:53:44 AM PST by wallcrawlr

CUDAHY, Wis. -- The Cudahy School District has changed its visitation policy for parents after a father spanked his daughter in front of other students in her high school biology class.

``The students were horrified,'' James P. Heiden, the district's director of student services, said of the incident. ``It took everybody by complete surprise.''

Both Cudahy police and the Bureau of Milwaukee Child Welfare have reviewed the case at the school district's request, and neither found basis for child abuse or neglect.

``Obviously it's unusual to have a girl spanked in front of the class, it's highly unusual, but not a police matter, not at this time from the information we received,'' said Cudahy police Sgt. Randy Scheel.

Heiden said the district visitation policy now calls for parents to meet with students only in the office, not a classroom.

The girl's mother, contacted at home Monday evening, told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel her daughter ``comes from a very loving family. There's nothing to be concerned about.''

She described the spanking as a misjudgment for which the family apologized to the school. Police said they had no record of prior contact with anyone in the family.

School officials said the girl had disrupted her biology class Feb. 11, leading assistant principal Greg DePue to notify her father when he was at school the next day addressing a situation with another child.

DePue said the father entered the classroom, called his daughter to the front and told her he would not have her disrupting class. He then told the girl to turn around, and spanked her on her bottom, the assistant principal said.

``It was so fast,'' DePue said. ``It just happened.''

This father should be praised even though the daughter is kinda old to get spanked but at least the AP framed what happened correctly....I was expecting headline, "Father Physically Abuses Daughter".

Usually if you are going to spank a child, it's best to do it right away and get it over with. But it was a mistake to do it at school. Lucky the school authorities seem to be pretty sensible.

On the other hand, this is a lot better than NOT disciplining a child at all, which is pretty common these days.

my opinion:

don't reprimand your children in front of their peers -- at least not in way that calls undue attention to them.

high school is too old for a father to physically discipline his child. she's becoming a young lady and lines must be drawn that repsect that.

it's a strikeout.

Reinforcing and promoting discipline at school should be the parents job wouldn't you agree?

To many parents leave it up to the schools to teach that.

That was just stupid. Does he expect to gain her respect by humiliating her in front of classmates? I don't care what she did to disrupt the class. There are other ways to deal effectively with it. He sounds like a real a-hole. Maybe she learns her unorthodox behavior at home.

I have teenage daughters and I would never do something like this to them. Plus, spanking at that age is not a good idea IMO.

There are plenty of other ways to discipline children like this.

The girl could have been made to write an apology letter and read it in class, or any number of other things.

I left out the part about further disciplinary action at home.

She should have been made to make some sort of ammends at school, and then handle the situation at home.

oh come on. The father spanks the daughter for disrupting the class? The father's act was far more disruptive than anything the girl could have done in the class. He should have called her out into the hall and discussed the situation with her - if a high school kid hasn't "gotten" it yet on proper behavior, a spanking certainly isn't going to do anything. Take away her car, her phone, her radio and her social life for a few weeks and see if that doesn't in fact correct her attitude.

Yes I do.

Now we have FReepers who are too PC for their own good. I fear this country is headed down the wrong path faster than I thought.

My dad would have spanked me then and again when I got home for making him do it in the first place. We need more dads like this. There is one slight caution on abuse, but that is usually the exception and not the rule and would be even less and less if the abusers were taken care of (know what I mean Vern?).

I'm not opposed to corporal punishment at all. I am, however, not in favor of the way this was handled by the father.

Such disciplinary activities should be done in private, not in front of a classroom of the girl's peers.

You're correct.

The "Amends" should have been for her to issue a personal, written apology to the teacher and class, to be hand-delivered.

As it is, here's what dear old dad accomplished:

1. He has set himself against his daughter as an enemy, and that's never good.

2. The rest of the class will sympathize with the girl, and she'll no doubt go along with them on the matter.

3. The authorities will be keeping uncomfortably close tabs on dear old dad and mom -- this incident really does suggest the possibility of child abuse at home.

precisely. I could not agree with you more.

At that age, punishment must be directed at what really matters to the kid...No IM, no cell, no car. Spanking a kid that age is, IMNSHO, ridiculous.

I don't agree that the father should be praised. I firmly believe in disciplining children, however, doing this to a teenage girl in front of a class is extremely inappropriate.

I think it depends on what she did. If her disruption of the class the day before gained her attention and the rebellious respect of her peers, it seems extremely fitting for her humiliation to be there. It is possible that the girl got exactly the kind of attention for her behavior that she needed.

I know that some parents go too far in spanking.... I had a teen friend whose father made no attempt to hide the use of a belt on her during her own slumber party. We did and do find that sad. But this may not have been that. I can think of smart alecky kids that this would have been good for!

Agreed. There is a vast difference from one whack on a misbehaving child's backside to teach them where the boundaries are, and several whacks everywhere else to make the parent feel less mad. We would be better off if society recognized the desirability of the former along the way to rightfully rejecting the latter.

Then have a talk with her in private. ....take away the car keys. .....cut the allowance. Spanking someone that age is a sure indication that the father isn't dealing with a full deck. ....And to do so in that setting is a sure indication that he's a sadistic POS.

I was a teenager when my mom tried to swat me on the butt for the last time... I was quick enough to duck out of the way and she hit the corner of the refrigerator instead in just a way to break a bone or two in the back of her hand. By the time we got her to the hospital it had become funny. The Admitting nurse asked how she had injured it, and she said "I was trying to hit my kid". LOL!
