During lunchtime/afternoon it literally takes me one hour to get from Westbury to Uniondale via Old Country Road *LOL* thank goodness I can now walk to my job.

From Bay Ridge to Columbus Circle (where I go to school), it takes me 50 minutes to an hour by train. By car, with rush hour traffic on the Gowanus, it would be only slighly less. When I lived in Malverne (Nassau County) the commute was only 25-30 minutes to midtown via train, with a change in Jamaica.

The funny thing about this article is that everybody in New York lies through their teeth whenever they say how long it takes them to get anywhere. If a New Yorker says he gets to work in 31 minutes, rest assured that the commute takes at least an hour. My family has made a joke about how long it takes to get from Jersey to Westchester. Somebody walks in the door, and the first question, even before "How are you?" is "How was the traffic?" We always say that it only took 15 minutes to go 45 miles, and laugh. Usually it's close to two hours, but what's the use of whining about that?

Rest assured, I was being accurate about my commute. If I get a job in Manhattan afer graduation, I am most definately moving there or Brooklyn Heights.

A great piece of advice was what an 'old-timer' told me when I was in my teens:

"Make sure you find a bathroom somewhere BEFORE you start traveling on a subway, train, bus or car."

Come to New Jersey. Now, stop laughing! There are a lot of nice commutes from New Jersey, depending on where you work in Manhattan. There are even some nice towns.

When talking about the LIRR, that's very true.

I'm not a suburbanite and I hate living among families with kids. Besides, Hoboken is SO overrated!

Never never depend on the Lincoln tunnel for your commute. It's horrendous. Whether you're on a bus, in a private car or in one of those little vans, you will either wind up getting stuck in a queue of buses trying to unload in the Port Authority or stuck in traffic trying to make the turn onto 42 St. from Dyer Avenue. And that's after sitting in the tunnel for anywhere between 15 to 30 minutes.

I would give anything to be able to afford an apt. in Manhattan. I despise New Jersey.

Back in the 60's when I was at Hofstra it took about 10 minutes to get from Hempstead to Westbury.

I used to work up by Columbus Circle and it was a 15-20 minute subway ride, depending on whether I caught the local or the express.

Now, what *might* be my next job is a 10-15 minute walk from here, in Tribeca. :)

Commuting from and driving on Lawnguyland was one of THE worst experiences of my life. Fortunately, the closest line to my dad's house is the Port Washington line, which is the only one that doesn't go through Jamaica and one of the very few that doesn't start out in Suffolk.

My first six months working in New York I commuted from Newark. Between the drunks falling asleep on top of me on the 108 (I think it was) and the guys grabbing my on the shuttle train, I couldn't wait till I got my first apartment. I didn't even know enough to turn the radiator on--froze for the first week until I mentioned how cold it was to somebody--but heaven heaven heaven.

Ah yes, the 108. I used to take it to Newark when I was going to Rutgers (another mistake.)I had to take a local bus to get to Journal Square to pick up the 108. All in all, my commute to Newark took 90 minutes each way.I did that for 2 years and then threw in the towel.

In from Westchester every single weekday. I drive about a mile to park at the train station, take the nice comfy Metro-North RR 32 minutes to Grand Central, then pleasant 10-minute midtown walk to my office. About 45-50 minutes.

And I love it. I wouldn't trade my morning train ritual of coffee, bagel & newspaper for anything. It's the only time all day no one is bugging me.

How things have changed on the once bucolic L.I. of my youth. Seriously, the LIE was a dream drive over 30 years ago and the SOB(South Oyster Bay X-Pressway was empty. When my husband and I go to Port Washington to visit relatives we usually travel out to Orient to take the ferry home to Boston. Easier than the commute back toward the city.
