Actually, I read something along these lines one time. The story was that Judas joined Jesus's diciples because he believed Jesus would overthrow the Romans and Herod, and expected to gain a high leadership position in Jesus's new earthly kingdom.

When Jesus explained that his kingdom was not of this earth, Judas got cheezed off. Since he was already at the bottom of the disciple pecking order, he felt unappreciated by Jesus and the others. Determined to raise his status somehow, he decided he could do better by striking a deal with the Pharasees. Instead of gaining favor in their eyes, they treated him like a whore.

All in all, a small bitter git of a man. His only claim to fame would be to go down in history as the arch-betrayer.
