A Shameful Past Don't play the Vietnam card with me, John Kerry.

The Vietnamization of the 2004 presidential campaign has unfortunately begun, thanks to the likely Democratic nominee. But John Kerry's service--Vietnam, in case you haven't heard--doesn't exist in a vacuum. His 19-year Senate record is at long odds with that short naval career, just as his vote to send troops to liberate Iraq is at odds with his later vote not to fund the mission. His supporters ask us to note his heroism in combat. We have, ad nauseam. But more important, and the thing he doesn't want discussed, is the well-documented though less well-known hypocrisy of those who use his service to further their antimilitary agenda.

Mr. Kerry led the way, proud in the company of Jane Fonda and others we believed had caused the deaths of good men. This group's testimony tarnished honorable actions.

Well said.

I share much in common with this writer. I too am in Atlanta and a mother of two. I also was 8 when my dad, career Air Force, was sent to Vietnam. However, my dad came back home. My dad is also a flaming liberal (now a professor at a northeast university).

My dad has always voted Democrat. This year he says he will not vote at all. He refuses to vote for Kerry. Very telling that Kerry can't even garner the support of liberal veterans.

"I sent a reply to Opinion Journal. I don't know how many people read the responses there,..."

Just checked, they haven't posted any responses to this article yet.

Comment:
Thank you Ms Armstrong, for expressing so clearly and thoughfully what Senator Kerry's stand on military matters will mean to the future of America. He seems to want to relive the 'highlights' of his past experiences while on active duty. Yet apparently he has no insight into how his words and actions are perceived by millions of Americans who have direct connections to the war in Vietnam. Why he thinks that he can get a pass on his actual record from voters is amazing. I do not believe that Americans will want this man as Commander-in-chief.

The responses are there now. Mine was not printed. The first six replies started with "thank you" to the writer. 2 of about 10 replies were negative.
