I don't think this new law will make one bit of difference, as almost nobody in NY work for less than $10 dollars an hour, anyway. And more often than not, it's off the books, anyway. That means for a 50 hour week, they make $500 dollars a week, about $25,000 cash, no taxes, per year. Not bad for "unskilled" labor. At least in the Metro area, for sure.
There is a huge "underground" economy like this in NY. Waiters, bartenders, cooks, deli workers, and construction workers make good salaries under the table.
Even our local illegal immigrants won't work for less than $15 an hour for landscaping!
