We have a bit of a problem putting a bumper sticker on in NYC....this town is so weirdly left.
We are in the arts and it gets worse in that environment...we just keep our mouths shut to some degree and open when the opportunity presents itself~

Hey, it doesn't have to be a "black" thing! I live in a mostly Jewish, overwhelmingly Democrat district, and I got the same reaction yesterday. To make it worse, the young woman who was supposed to put my ballot in the box just sat there holding it while I stared at her and finally told her, "Put it in the box. Now. I know what it's like to be a Republican here, and I want to *watch* you put it in the box, okay?" She glared at me for about 10 seconds before she put it in. You don't think she was intending to trash it, do you?
Oh, and I'm in the San Fernando Valley.

I walk in, hand over my ID I missed this last night.
In California, not only do poll workers not ask for ID, they, in fact, discourage its presentation.
Not to judge the accuracy of the rest of this story, but this snippet isn't a likely scenario. Maybe an old, hard to break, habit, or maybe poetic license or maybe something by which to judge the authenticity of the whole vignette.
