TX GOP Primary Alert - Beware of Liberal Democrats' Intervention in Our Primary
"Texas Republican Activists" <TexasRepublicans@netscape.net> | March 4, 2004 | Matthew Griffing, Phil Magness and Brian Bodine

Phil Magness, Project Chairman, East Gulf Coast Republican Assembly;
Brian Bodine, Chairman, University of Texas College Republicans;

March 4, 2004

Dear Fellow Republican,

It is great to be the majority party in Texas, but with this achievement comes the danger that liberal Democrats will attempt to manipulate our primary to undermine conservative Republican candidates. This danger is even greater now that leftist John Kerry has secured the presidential nomination.

We should be pleased when any remaining conservative Democrats join our party and participate in our open primary. However, we write to warn you of multiple attempts by liberal Democrats, who have no intention of voting Republican in November, to skew our primary process.

Earlier this week, Travis County Republican Party Chairman Alan Sager placed an automated call to Republican primary voters advising them that some Austin Democrats are planning to vote in the Republican primary in order to select "Uncommitted" for President solely for the purpose of embarrassing President Bush.

Second, liberal Democrat donors are contributing large sums of money to some candidates running as Republicans.

The most blatant example of this is Paul Green, who is challenging conservative Republican Texas Supreme Court Justice Steven Wayne Smith. Paul Green has received tens of thousands of dollars from wealthy Democrats who are huge donors to liberal politicians such as Ted Kennedy, Howard Dean, Hillary Clinton, John Kerry, Al Gore, and Sheila Jackson Lee.

Tonight, Richard and Ginni Mithoff, who are liberal Democrat donors to Hillary Clinton's PAC, John Edwards, and the Planned Parenthood PAC, are hosting a fundraiser at their home for Paul Green.** As one of the plaintiff's lawyers in the Texas tobacco suit, Mithoff pocketed $10 million in legal fees that would have been better used to benefit the public.

Paul Green has also raised over a thousand dollars from the law firm Smyser, Kaplan & Veselka and its individual named partners. The firm and each of its named partners are large donors to liberal Democrats like Al Gore. Smyser, Kaplan & Veselka are also the lawyers for Planned Parenthood and have donated thousands of firm dollars to support Planned Parenthood's abortion facilities.

Harry Reasoner, the lawyer who defended racial quotas at the University of Texas in the Hopwood case which he lost to Steven Wayne Smith, is now taking revenge with his wallet. Reasoner, a big donor to Tom Daschle and other liberal Democrats, has given $1,000 to Paul Green.

Even Carlos Zaffirini, lawyer for the fugitive Texas Democrat legislators, donor to John Kerry, and husband of liberal Democrat State Sen. Judith Zaffirini, has given $5,000 to Paul Green.

The website www.paulgreendemocrats.com fully documents Paul Green's extensive network of liberal Democrat donors and provides proof for all of the contributions and facts referenced above.

It is disingenuous for a candidate to raise large sums of money from liberal Democrats and then use those funds to campaign for conservative Republican primary votes.

Believe it or not, some liberal Democrats are actually running as Republicans in this primary.

Conservative Republican Ernest Garcia faces Bill Green in the primary for the Austin-based 3rd Court of Appeals. Bill Green has voted in numerous Democrat primaries and worked for a liberal Democrat state legislator. Bill Green has never had a client and has never tried a case.

In the race for the Houston-based 14th Court of Appeals, Lloyd Oliver, who ran previously as a Democrat, is challenging highly respected Republican incumbent Justice Eva Guzman.

Finally, liberal Democrats are seeking to skew our Republican primary through their dominance of the media. We would strongly encourage you to disregard virtually all newspaper endorsements.

Polls have consistently shown that 90% of journalists are Democrats. While newspapers frequently write endorsements to give the appearance that their decisions are based on the qualifications of the candidates, this is often simply a cover for selecting the more liberal Republican.

Please be sure to vote in early voting through Friday, March 5 or on election day Tuesday, March 9. Please also encourage all your fellow Republicans to go to the polls and share this message with them. This is our best and, indeed, our only defense against attempts by liberal Democrats to manipulate our primary.

Sincerely,

Matthew Griffing Vice Chairman for Legislative Affairs Young Conservatives of Texas *

Phil Magness Project Chairman East Gulf Coast Republican Assembly *

Brian Bodine, Chairman University of Texas College Republicans *

*Organizations listed for identification purposes only.

**Fundraiser for Paul Green was held tonight, March 4 from 6:00 to 7:30 pm by liberal Democrat tobacco trial lawyer Richard Mithoff at his River Oaks home in Houston. Verified by phone call to Mithoff's law office at 12:15pm Thursday, March 4. Receptionist confirmed event was for Paul Green and provided directions.

How do you find out this stuff? It is always a big struggle to figure out who is who in these primaries, and I know most people don't bother.

Would that include Michael McCaul in US CD 10? Endorsed by the liberal Austin American-Statesman and called the "moderate" of the candidates by the liberal Austin Chronicle, although they would not endorse anyone?

I think the Austin papers are endorsing McCaul because he is the only contender in any House race from Austin. I have met with McCaul several times for extended interviews. He is not a moderate or RINO. Some complain that he worked with Bush and Cornyn. While these may not be as conservative as some of us would like, they are the most conservative team available to work with.

Here is my Harris County list:

I agree that we need someone better than Woodfill for HCRP Chair, but it only took 5 minutes of hearing Schneider once to know he is not conservative.

McCaul isnt the only one from Austin. Theresa Doggett Taylor also lives here. But I dont think she is putting any money into the race like McCaul is.

"He is not a moderate or RINO. Some complain that he worked with Bush and Cornyn. While these may not be as conservative as some of us would like, they are the most conservative team available to work with."

Yes and no. McCaul picked up Cornyn's endorsement; Devine's webpage says he picked up the endorsement of Ron Paul. So you could say that McCaul is the more establishment conservative choice in a field with other more ideological conservative candidates.

Yes, I said he was the only contender from Austin.

I think more likely you could say that McCaul used to work for Cornyn and Ron Paul knows Devine from years of exposure in the Houston area. There are other reasons I don't think Devine is worthy of the position. I did tell McCaul and Streusand that I was looking for someone who will challenge Ron Paul for the "Taxpayers Best Friend" award.

"McCaul isnt the only one from Austin."
"Yes, I said he was the only *contender* from Austin."

Ouch, that's a bit too cutting to the other candidates.
So, what is the 'ante" in the campaign pot to make you a 'contender'? $100,000? $500,000?

"I did tell McCaul and Streusand that I was looking for someone who will challenge Ron Paul for the "Taxpayers Best Friend" award."

Many are called but few answer. :-)

I'm not basing my support on dollars raised or spent. I'm just looking at who is the best candidate that has a chance of making the runoff. Teresa Doggett Taylor does not have that chance (and would not make the support list even if she did.)

Just received a recorded phone call from Harris County Republican Party Chairman Jared Woodfill.

He was complaining about deceptive campaign tactics.

He only mentioned Sharon McCally (334th District Court) calling herself "The George W. Bush Republican" when Bush did not appoint her as judge.

Others have complained about McCally using a picture of Bush on her materials.

My complaint about McCally's materials is that they don't differentiate her from her opponent. It is nice to know she got her daughter a dog for her birthday.

I guess that is the problem with running a positive campaign. Everyone running on a Republican ticket claims to be "conservative", "pro life", "pro family", "George Bush", "NRA/RKBA", etc.

My decision to vote for McCally is basically a vote against Rondon, who has allied himself with Blakemore.

GOPcapitalist said on the Texas forum:
"I've heard good things about Bain and a friend recommended Munoz. I was NOT impressed with Anderson when I met her. Don't know too much about McCally but she's running against Rondon, who is a Perry appointee and Blakemore client. So are Bernal and Carter. That's reason enough for me to oppose them because (a) Perry has a TERRIBLE track record of appointing judges - he picks RINOs and rewards the "big 5" law firms by picking judges from their ranks and (b) Blakemore is a sleazy peice of garbage so any candidate who goes to him and hires him has a lot of explaining to do."

I think as a public figure, anyone can use Bush's image/name without permission. I don't agree with Woodfill's implication that calling herself a "George W. Bush Republican" implies his endorsement.

I suspect Woodfill is getting pressure from Perry to support his appointee who is in danger of being defeated.

Yes, good idea. And a good idea to ping the whole state. Get more freepers involved and ready to get signed up to be at the state convention.

What we should do is post proposed resolutions. My hotbutton issues are: Immigration, judicial imperialism, educational vouchers. Not that other issues arent important (taxes, prolife, etc.) but they seem to be covered well by the platform already.

The pro-life Legacy PAC folks have a list and wording of proposed resolutions on a website. I'll post the link to that thread.

Here's my list of people in Harris County, though I'm sure some disagree with parts of it.

Congress District 10: PAT ELLIOT
Supreme Court Place 5: STEVEN WAYNE SMITH
Railroad Commissioner: CARILLO or DEFFENBAUGH
Court of Criminal Appeals Place 2: LARRY MEYERS
Court of Criminal Appeals Place 5: PATRICIA NOBLE
Court of Criminal Appeals Place 6: MIKE KEASLER
State Board of Education Disrict 6: TERRI LEO
Justice, 14th Court of Appeals: EVA GUZMAN
District Court 177: EMILY MUNOZ

District Court 334: SHARON MCCALLY
Justice of the Peace 4: J KENT ADAMS

I'll tell you exactly what Woodfill is doing in that race and its unlikely that he's doing it at Perry's bidding. Perry probably wouldn't object to it but my guess is that Perry doesn't even know its happening - too local of a race to be on his radar.

McCally is running against Reece Rondon, a campaign client of political prostitutes Alan Blakemore and Steve Hotze. Woodfill is in bed with Dr. Hotze and Blakemore. He has been for the last two years and hired his staff directly out of their consulting operation. He also uses them for all the party's major fundraiser events, campaign advertising, and other consulting stuff. So my guess is that the good doctor simply called in a favor from Woodfill.

I suspect it even more because Woodfill has done this before. In 2002 he did an automated dial message urging voters to disregard "deceptive slates" of endorsements. In that autodial he specifically targetted one slate that was indeed being deceptive (it also endorsed against several Blakemore/Hotze clients) but remained completely silent about another equally sleazy and deceptive slate: the one Steve Hotze puts out himself. The result of the message was accordingly not to cast doubt on corrupt endorsement slate practices but only to target ONE particular commpetitor slate while giving another corrupt slate of his cronies a free ride.
