Martha Stewart Issues Statement

Dear Friends:
I am obviously distressed by the jury's verdict but I continue to take comfort in knowing that I have the confidence and enduring support of my family and friends.
I will appeal the verdict and continue to fight to clear my name. I believe in the fairness of the judicial system and remain confident that I will ultimately prevail.
I can't tell you how much I appreciate all the words of encouragement I have received from thousands of supporters. It is your continued support that will keep me going until I am completely exonerated.
Sincerely,

Martha Stewart

Don't ya need a reason for appeal?
Is she arguing that the evidence was inadmissible?
To: GulliverSwift
Enron, Etoys, Tyco, etc: nobody gets convicted.
Forbes 400 Martha ruthlessly breaks law in order to make $40,000: convicted on all counts.
In the America I used to know, it was the lawbreakers who went to jail.

In the America I used to know, it was the lawbreakers who went to jail.Oh, but don't you see, Martha is a strong business women who sometimes must act like a man (bad temper) so she must be punished. If she were a man, it would just be normal behavior.
FYI, my friend told me that about two weeks ago her broker called her and suggested that a certain stock was about to go down so she should sell it. She did and it went down. I told her to watch her back cause Martha did that and look at her.
To: rogueleader
Her lawyers know that if the Bush administration can seem the bad guy in some way, the media will pick right up on it. That's why they keep saying it's "John Ashcroft's Witch Hunt."
They know that the reason why Enron was covered the most, and most enthusiastically, was because Enron gave money to the Bush campaign.

Dear Friends:
I am obviously not surprised by the jury's verdict but I continue to be shocked in knowing that those ankle bracelets don't go with a *thing* in my closet.
I will appeal the verdict and continue to fight to get me out of this orange jumpsuit (it's not even fall yet). I believe in lieing, ubstructing and decieving the judicial system and remain confident that I will ultimately prevail.
I can't tell you how much I appreciate all the words of encouragement I have received from thousands of future cell mates. It is your ability to be brainwashed by Enertainment Tonight, Access Hollywood, and Extra that will keep me going until I am completely exonerated even tho I'm guilty as sin.
Sincerely,
Martha

Why were both Martha Threads that were put up immediately put up after the announcement blocked by the FreeRepublic censors? aren't we old enough to read the truth and comment? It's pretty bad when we have to go to different sites to read the news the administrators don't think we should read.

Enron, Etoys, Tyco, etc: nobody gets convicted. Patience, grasshopper :) Those cases are a heck of a lot more complex than this no-brainer.

I wonder how many attorneys got on their cells and placed an order with their brokers to short 1K shares of MSO (Martha Stewart). Would that be considered insider trading?

I'm willing to accept the jury's decision on this one. They had all the facts and took the time to review and compare all the evidence.
IMHO - the 'big' shots are waiting in the wings. I think more prosecutions will take place and a lot of the big boys will be going to jail.

Enron, Etoys, Tyco, Worldcom
They'll be going to jail in time (not sure about Etoys... I've added Worldcom which is near and dear to my "heart"). Martha got what she deserved. It always bothered me that she and her broker were prepared to trash the young brokers assistant (who's once promising career is RUINED) and let him take the fall for them all. He cooperates and the criminals are now convicted. JMHO.
To: w1andsodidwe
Oh, but don't you see, Martha is a strong business women who sometimes must act like a man (bad temper) so she must be punished. If she were a man, it would just be normal behavior. The allegation that this is happening because she is a woman is ludicrous, and you sound like that radical marxists at colleges that whine that everything is about racism or sexism.
FYI, my friend told me that about two weeks ago her broker called her and suggested that a certain stock was about to go down so she should sell it. She did and it went down. I told her to watch her back cause Martha did that and look at her.
Non sequiter. It is not illegal for a broker to tell someone that he/she thinks a stock is going down. It is not illegal for a broker to relay that someone else thinks that a stock is going down. It is not illegal for an investor to act on that information. It is illegal for a broker to pass on inside information and for an investor to act on it.

I am not happy with the Martha Stewart verdict. I remember that Cheney left Haliburton with millions, and he got away with it. I do not think that Martha has done anything to deserve jail time. We are now in a situation where our elected and appointed officials are not even attempting to uphold the law. It is wrong to make just a few obey the law while the rest laugh. The gay marriage fiasco is an example. Why should anyone obey the law now?

Being famous in this country is like having a big red target on your forehead. She should split the country with all her money and buy an island somewhere.
To: Rodney King
Martha had only to tell the truth to the SEC investigators and all would have been forgiven. (OK, maybe she would have been forced to fork over $50-$100,000 or whatever she profited from trading on the inside information, but that's it.)
Instead she lied to the investigators and she, stupidly, told lies that were easy to prove.
What gets me is that she used to be a securities trader, so all of the regulations regarding this stuff is stuff she knows!
With all of the problems surrounding investments these days, from crooked companies like Adelphia, Enron, World Com, etc; to touts being in bed with the companies on whom they report; to folks improperly profiting off of mutual fund trades; to insider trading; to the stock market correction in 2000, the everyday investor needs some confidence, somewhere that the game is not rigged.
Martha thought she could buy and bluster her way through this. Maybe in most climates she might have been right. Not this time, though.

Martha thought she could buy and bluster her way through this. Maybe in most climates she might have been right. Not this time, though. That's right. And if she was successful, all we would be hearing about is how the rich and famous can get away with crimes.

I remember that Cheney left Haliburton with millions, and he got away with it. Huh? He got away with what? Getting paid? Are you alledging that he stole money? What are you talking about? You think he should have had money taken from him because he made too much? What law did he break?
Marth was convicted because she BROKE THE LAW, and then BROKE THE LAW BY LYING ABOUT IT. End of story.

Oh, but don't you see, Martha is a strong business women an ex-stockbroker who knew the implications,... ...so she must be punished. That was always the overwheming issue for me, she knew it looked bad, and instead of saying "mea culpa", it was the cover-up that killed her. The SEC would have liked a nice donation with no fuss through a fine.

Sorry Martha was not jo schmoe getting advice from a broker, this was a SITTING MEMBER OF THE NEW YORK STOCK EXCHANGE BOARD using what she knew to be insider information, and she knew it.
Then lied and colluded about it to investigators! This nonsense spin that Martha is a victim is crap.

IMO, you are absolutely correct. The Feds had no great desire to whack Martha. IMO she was extremely poorly served by her attorneys from the very beginning. She could have come clean when this broke as a scandal. She could have fallen on her sword and said she panicked, sold her shares, then only later realized what she had done via a vis insider trading or trading on priveleged info, whatever you want to call it. Had her stock gone to ZERO, she would have lost $250K, nothing to her. Had she come clean and volunteered either a charitable donation or a donation to an SEC enforcement fund, she could have volunteered (I think a larger amount than what you say, but the same idea applies) maybe 2-3 million, the matter would have been over on the spot. Instead, she forced the govt (the SEC, specifically, which is underfunded) to utilize its' resources pursuing her pidddly little snafu and she stubbornly wouldn't back down. There was never the slightest doubt that she had lied to the Feds, none, zero. She could have gotten past all her previous experience as a broker, all everything, if she had just come clean at the outset.
