ABC "This Week" host George Stephanopoulos took an unabashed detour from his moderator duties during his Sunday interview with Sen. John McCain, literally begging the Arizona Republican at one point to join the Democratic presidential ticket as Sen. John Kerry's running mate. The exchange went like this:
STEPHANOPOULOS: Sen. John Kerry was on this program and I asked him if he'd consider asking you to be his running mate . . . . Are you open to the idea?
MCCAIN: No. I'm a Republican. It's hard for me to imagine that a pro-life, free trading, defense and deficit hawk would be acceptable to the Democrat Party. It's always flattering to hear one's name mentioned but I do not intend to leave the Republican Party.
STEPHANOPOULOS: A lot of Democrats think this is a dream ticket. So, there's no chance you'll reconsider?
MCCAIN: I cannot envision a scenario, George. As I say, it's flattering. But I have no view where I could leave the Republican Party.
STEPHANOPOULOS: OK. You're not quite being General Sherman but I think you're clear. [End of Excerpt]

...a pro-life, free trading, defense and deficit hawk... McCain knows one?

I was actually happy with McCain today. He was pretty good. If he puts his support behind the FMA, I might even forgive him for CFR (okay, no forgive, but I'll overlook it). At least he is in agreement fundamentally with the importance of man/woman marriage being the foundational structure of humanity. I can sympathize with his position and hesitancy regarding a constitutional amendment. What I hope he quickly realizes is that it is likely our only alternative.
Yes, I am proudly a one issue voter this year.

I can't comprehend why McCain would be flattered that the Rats think he is one of them.

How about; "While I was a POW, Kerry was doing what?" Now that may have been a better answer.

A lot of Democrats think this is a dream ticket. So, there's no chance you'll reconsider?A dream ticket? What could they be thinking? McCain is a hawk, and the guy the so called evil neo-cons actually supported in 2000. This talk came up with Lieberman a lot, but at least Lieberman and McCain are politically much closer.

Sorry, McCain is one of the most anti-constitution, anti-billl of rights Senators there is.
He sponsored one of the worst offenses against the first amendment ever (CFR).
And he was one of only 8 Senators who voted twice in favor or extending the Clinton ugly gun ban. He also sponsored a measure to require private citizens to obtain background checks on potential purchasers before they sell their own, privately owned weapons, and then he voted twice in support of that measure. Again, he was one of only 8 Senators (I think) who voted that way twice.
Let's see here,
Anti First Amendment
Anti Second Amendment
How long before Senator McCain (R-Media) proposes to quarter troops in the homes of American citizens (Third Amendment).

I'm sure McCain would be honored to stump for that man who betrayed him and other POWs while McCain was being held in the Tiger Cages of Hanoi.

And what is the fascination with death that George has (In Memoriam at the end of each show). Is that from his time on the Arkancide squad?
To: Tumbleweed_Connection
I never understood the Democrats love of John McCain. As he told Stephie, he is a Republican and stands by those principles. I understand he is a thorn to Bush, at times, but he is a conservative. Sometimes I do not agree with him, but I could say the same thing about Bush.
To: Tumbleweed_Connection
The RINO and the Gigolo, that's the ticket!
To: All
McCain is a RINO. A RINO is more conservative in his impact than a "Democrat moderate" (DINO, DU calls them). A RINO is more conservative than a typical Democrat. A RINO is more conservative than a far left Democrat.
Why is this rocket science? McCain is more conservative than the vast majority of Democrats. Absent contortion, he is thus more preferable to them -- and he has carried the water for the RNC on a number of occasions just like this one mentioned above. Contrast him with Jeffords.

Is "STEPHANOPOULOS" still around?
To: freekitty
Unfortunatly STEPINPOOPALOTS is still around, his ratings would have to be in negative numbers before ABC would admit his biased rants had to go.

Oh I hear ya on your post #12. I'm just saying that I am personally willing to overlook all of that -- a HUGE step for me -- if he will support the FMA. That doesn't mean I don't think you are absolutely right, or that I won't still argue exactly that on those issues. But this year I have one litmus test and that's the FMA.

I can't stand McStain, but he voted AGAINST (once) the ugly gun ban as an amendment to the bill. He DID vote for the gun show ban though.
And he voted for the final bill with had the ugly gun ban on it. One of 8 to do so(Dasshole was another)

how mccain can even stand for his name to be mentioned in the same sentence with kerry is baffling to me. I know McCrazy is an olddball now, but he did survive as a POW while kerry was doing his best to get the rest of us arrested, detested and/or killed.
Every vet that comes within 10 feet of kerry should spit on him like they did us!!!!
To: Tumbleweed_Connection
Sounds like the 'Rats are look for some "gravitas" for Kerry.

How low do the ratings have to get for ABC to finally replace Snuffle-up-agus?
