Yes, the United States Coast Guard is a branch of the Armed Forces. They aren't under the DoD because of their federal law enforcement responsibilities and the unique nature of their missions; but they go to war like the rest.

Perhaps because of their roles and missions, the Coast Guard is a little more sensitive to certain issues then the other services. For instance, if an active duty Coastie did this but used his name only, no mention of the service, nothing would probably be said (but they would find their job taking a sudden turn for very unpleasant duties until discharge), however, by using "Coast Guard" in this the person has crossed a serious line.

FORT LEWIS, WASH. - A U.S. National Guardsman who was just days away from being sent to Iraq was arrested Thursday for allegedly trying to provide information to the al-Qaeda network through internet chat rooms.

Spc. Ryan G. Anderson was being held at Fort Lewis on Thursday "pending criminal charges of aiding the enemy by wrongfully attempting to communicate and give intelligence to the al-Qaeda terrorist network," said Lt.-Col. Stephen Barger, a spokesperson with the U.S. army.

US soldier kills comrades in grenade attack

A US soldier most likely acted out of resentment today when he threw grenades into tents at a 101st Airborne Division command centre, killing a fellow serviceman, an Army spokesman said.

Fifteen other soldiers, including the division commander, were wounded - at least three of them seriously - in the attack early today at Camp Pennsylvania, the rear base for the 101st near the Iraqi border. The 101st is based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

The dead soldier was identified today as Army Capt Christopher Scott Seifert, 27. No hometown was immediately available for Seifert, who was sleeping in his tent when the grenade attack occurred, the Defence Department said.

The soldier in custody was identified today as Sgt Asan Akbar of the 326th Engineer Battalion. Fort Campbell spokesman George Heath said Akbar had not been charged with any crime. Heath did not release Akbar's hometown or say how long he had served in the military.

Hi Doug! Good hard work! As I see it, this is a free speech issue. If these useful idiots want to ID themselves as useful idiots, they have that right. But you're absolutely right about military ID's (and IMHO) ID's of those in positions of sensitivity with regard to national security (DoD contractors, University employees with access to defense research, etc.)

Those names should be culled and forwarded to the FBI, and I suspect that they are being culled as we commune.

Exactly. I had a little over 30 and a half years in the Coast Guard when I retired in 1999; then back for a little while after 9/11.

Yep, same ranking system as the Navy but our "average" unit is commanded by a CPO or CWO and has under 30 people.

Besides size and missions of course, the biggest difference between the Coast Guard and the other services is our average unit is located in a small community. We are part of the community and behave accordingly.

No offense to the Navy folks, but we can't afford to act like a bunch of drunken sailors.
