What if same sex unions started happening between "hetro" singles just to get the benefits of married couples. Valid point IMO the system is open for easier abuse.

This is a tremendously important point, and one that concerns me far more than homosexual unions. By eviscerating the definition of marriage, the fringe Left is abandoning the concept to the perversion of relative perception. (What's new?) But, why not 'marry' your roomate when he loses his job and wants benefits? Why not pair up with a friend for a tax benefit?

The homosexual community abandoned a profound opportunity to demonstrate the legitimacy of their unions, and the quality of their character... both of which are in severe doubt at the moment. It was their repsonsibilitry to define themselves for the world, and to invent their own legitimate definition as citizens and families. But, what they chose to do was to behave like spoiled children, ignore civic responsibility and pilfer concepts to which they have no relevance or right. I made this point to the Oregonian in my latest LTE.... another one that will never get published.

LTE: Alternative Unions

I could support alternative unions and any benefits that can be morally defended. But, the ideal condition of marriage is the balanced unification of the male and female aspect of humanity with the express potential for natural human reproduction and an ideal family condition. The homosexual community has a tremendous opportunity to define themselves for America and the world and to legitimize their relationships with one another. By choosing a term and crafting legislation to establish same-sex unions, they can protect their own definitions from further 'radicalization' and codify the legitimacy of their emotional commitment. They have the ability to choose and make their point in the public forum. It would be a tremendous opportunity and they would have majority support in this nation - thereby helping to unify rather than divide at a time when the rift is already large and deep and full of razors. Instead, you have radical elements with an unrelated agenda, prostituting homosexuals and their passions to ram an issue, quite forcefully and undemocratically, down this nation's throat, while destroying an institution that is fundamental to this Constitutional Republic. It is both stupid, and unconscionable!
