[history]
Fewer young people are attracted by the idea of a government service career than in the past, according to a survey that found those interested in such careers are more drawn to helping others than to earning good pay and benefits.

I am currently in a community college program that is basically designed for me to work for the government, but I dont plan on it. Even tho the job I would be performing would be one of the few that is actually in the public interest, I just couldnt face myself in the mirror knowing that I was paid good money stolen from those who are forced to do with less because of my employer...JFK

Military service aside, I consider this a good thing. Government shrinkage is good. Hopefully, most will run their own businesses. Entrepreneurship contributes much more to the common good than most government career service jobs can.

98% of government jobs won't appeal to anyone with self-respect. Self-respecting people don't want to be parasites.

What this could most likely mean is that people with principles and ethics will avoid government work, and the dishonest and lazy will fill the void if government continues its current hiring binge. As if the dishonest and lazy werent over-represented already...JFK

98% of government jobs won't appeal to anyone with self-respect. Self-respecting people don't want to be parasites. Then all those millions of government jobs will be filled by only non-self-respecting, sub-par, incompetent bureaucrats and sub-bureaucrats drawing high-paying salaries from our tax money....and many of those jobs affect our lives in many ways and involve access to personal data, other sensitive information, classified data...................... A government, large or small, populated by idiots will not serve us very well. And if you shrink government, the most talented will likely be the first to go.

And people who find a government populated by idiots will be much less inclined to fund it and turn their lives over to it.
Also, a government of idiots will be ignored. That, combined with defunding by a dissatisfied customer base, will help to neuter the damn thing.
Starving the funding, getting Americans to ignore, revile and laugh at it - looks like a good "limited government" plan to me. Bush and Co. sure as hell aren't doing anything about that particular campaign promise.

And people who find a government populated by idiots...Not promising. It likes like most voters still are Democrats and they like big government and higher taxes.
Also, a government of idiots will be ignored. That, combined with defunding by a dissatisfied customer base, will help to neuter the damn thing.
If it didn't happen by now, I wouldn't hold my breath.

What's the next great idea?

The older I get, the better government job benefits and job security look. The pay and the upward mobility still aren't much to talk about though.
