Why didn't this same thing happen here after 9/11? I was wondering about that too. But it should be noted that the 11 million marchers were not gathered in a single place; it was occuring around the country. Madrid had about 2.3 million marchers, Barcelona had 1.5 million.
I never saw an aggregated estimate for U.S. rallies after 9/11, but surely it must have been in the millions too.

The Spanish may show the world how to really fight terrorism again. They did it once some 14 centuries ago.
11 million take to the streets to protest terrorism. That is a loud message.

As a matter of fact, the biggest response and demonstration went down in the unlikeliest place:

Why didn't this same thing happen here after 9/11?We had faith in Bush and thought we had faith in the Democrats, too. But in Europe -- even in Spain -- it's possible that the leaders will get cold feet or try appeasement.
They also need to demonstrate their resoluteness to the rest of the EU.
To: AmishDude
And that's why Americans did not take to the streets to show a united front to the world?
Because we left it up to the Federal government?

We didn't need to demonstrate anything to the world. "The world" is how we got into that mess in the first place.
Bush said we would "get" the terrorists right away. No equivocating, no election in 4 days. Lest we forget, defense is one of the few things that the Federal government is required to do.
To: HAL9000
Over 11 million march in rallies against terrorist attack.
I just have to say "Duh." On September 11 I was the one who was weeping; my wife who earlier thought me too conservative was just angry and vengeful. Spain is entitled to a large measure of vengence.

I think it did - in bits and pieces.
If you'll recall, all across the country, folks attended memorials, rallies and vigils. For a brief time, the pink-o scum in the media didn't even dare to take a breath because the world had so totally changed and their message wasn't part of that change.
Then, like cats creeping softly, they began to complain that they were being frightened by the heightened patriotism...

What did we do?
A small group of us intentionally crashed a plane in a field in Pennsylvania, to save others.
And all air movement stopped.
The entire world stood still, for hours.
We worked,we mourned,we prayed,we lit candles,we stood together and grieved together.
Then most of us calmly and coldly aimed, pointed, and fired back.
Dont you remember?
Have you forgotten?
How can you have forgotten?

What? Were we supposed to sit there as targets? We were at war. The Spanish are treating this as a criminal act and not a declaration of war. They are setting themselves up for more of the same crap if they don't treat this with the seriousness that it deserves. Clinton and Reno made this mistake and look what it got us. No matter what the media wants you to think...many of these people are leftist scumbags. I bet you can translate this sign can't you?

So, go demonstrate. Demonstrate for hours, for days, for weeks, with your friends, with your enemies. And when you're done, you'll have sore feet, but an enormous sense of self-satisfaction.
And that's about it. But, hey, knock yourself out.

March march, but hold yer fire!
Marching does jack and $h!t against islamic terrorism. In fact, it'll just edge them on.
A good stiff Spaniard reply would work, but I guess they don't have the capability. And besides, the USA's response was anemic at best to 9/11.
Can't really blame them for marching, what else can they do? But a march is as useless as me watching a DVD at home sitting on the couch. It's utterly useless.

Or actually do anything worth a damn. And no, taliban and iraq were nothing yet. Absolutely nothing to the islamics.
A 'setback' at best. But they have a lot more women and kids to kill on our soil before we retaliate. In the hundreds of thousands next.
But we'll wait, like the 'good guys' we are. And even THEN types like you will defend islam. Sickening.

What of the millions of flags, bumper stickers, and patriotic gestures that so offended our media elites?
What of the millions and millions of dollars (billions?) that poured into the coffers of aid and relief agencies?
What of the millions of pints of blood that were given in the days and weeks following the attack?
What of the nationwide shutdown of liberal treason?
A powerfull thing happened here too, my friend.
