CNN ^ | March 12, 2004

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- This week's deadly train bombings in Spain will not lead to a rise in the U.S. color-coded terror threat alert system, a Department of Homeland Security spokesman said Friday.

"Based on the current intelligence, we have no specific indicators that terrorist groups are considering such an attack in the U.S. in the near term," said department spokesman Brian Roehrkasse.

Americans in gun sights of Mexican army
Posted: March 13, 2004

You'd think frequent gun battles along the U.S.-Mexico border between federal agents and citizen border-monitoring groups on this side, and drug and people smugglers on the other side, would make the national headlines.

Drafts are a funny topic.

Believe it or not, you can be drafted up to age 45 for a specialized draft of professionals with needed skills in the US military. But the US Military isnt the only branch that can draft you into military service.

Some states can also draft you into the authorized state militia in case of emergency, and make you available for duty for a period of up to 2 months in either the State Defense Force ( formed under 32USC109) or the state unorganized militia or state naval militia.

Ifa super bad catastrophic disaster were to occur, I wonder how many professionals would be on tap at both levels?

Russian officials fear low turnout
Saturday, March 13, 2004 Posted: 9:22 AM EST (1422 GMT)

Opponents say Putin has failed to combat poverty and corruption.

MOSCOW, Russia (Reuters) -- Russia's top electoral official is trying to instill enthusiasm into apathetic voters amid concern a low turnout will hinder President Vladimir Putin's otherwise certain re-election this weekend.

Ok. I haven't seen an original source link disclosed yet for the letter. It may be that the graphic doc is the original scanned, who knows. Probably in the next few days some jihadi will reveal another Arabic text link. But IH does have what is supposed to be the original Arabic writing of the letter though; there is no link included because most links of this nature are not disclosed by the posters.

GEOSTRATEGY-DIRECT INTELLIGENCE BRIEF
CIA's weak Arabic led to embarrassment
Letter to bin Laden judged sign of desperation, but actually sarcasm

Posted: March 13, 2004

The Bush administration wants us to think Abu Mussib Al Zarqawi is terrified of the United States and that his suicide strikes against Shi'ites constitute the last gasp of a desperate terrorist.

The administration's proof is a 17-page letter purportedly written by Zarqawi to al-Qaida's Osama bin Laden. In this, Zarqawi warns of U.S. plans to introduce elections and consolidate democratic rule in post-Saddam Iraq.

But U.S. intelligence sources now say that Zarqawi's letter has been misinterpreted, reports Geostrategy-Direct, the global intelligence news service.

"...eyewitnesses who said they've seen Mexican military and paramilitary police assisting Mexican nationals with crossing illegally into the U.S. And witnesses have described how some Mexican army and federal police units actually provide armed cover for smugglers packing drugs into our country..."

Unfreakin' believable. More proof via eyewitness account in Jon's book.

By MIKE BARBER

Government under fire over bombings
From correspondents in Madrid
March 14, 2004
MORE than a thousand people held a protest in Madrid today to blame this week's bombs in the capital on the government's unpopular decision to support the US war on Iraq.

Shouting "The bombs on Iraq have exploded in Madrid" and "Resign", the crowd gathered in front of the ruling Popular Party's headquarters but were held back by police in riot gear.
