After-Action: DC Chapter FReeps Left for Exploiting War Dead and Wounded
March 15, 2004 on FR | BillF

Posted on 03/15/2004 9:22:18 AM PST by BillF

Leftists participated in a ghoulish attempt to exploit war dead and wounded for propaganda as noted in this thread: Dover to D.C. Memorial Procession [Left Blood Dance DoverAFB to Walter Reed Hospital, W House].

The Doctor of FReep conducted a spectacular one man FReep of the leftists outside Dover Air Force Base yesterday as noted in this thread: Code Pinko Medea Benjamin Flees When Confronted by Doctor Raoul at Dover AFB.

Today, the left hit a low point. Demonstrating outside Walter Reed Army Hospital, where many of our most seriously wounded Iraqi troops are, the leftists numbered about a hundred people. Religious leftists, pacifists, and a few misguided members of military families were interpersed with a couple dozen more hard core revolutionary types.

The media was out in full force with dozens of cameras and recorders for radio reporters. Instead of just getting the leftist view, 3 DC Chapter FReepers were out to offer a dissenting opinion.

The honor roll for this gathering of eagles: Kristinn, tgslTakoma, and BillF.

All of us were interviewed. Various verbal matches between us and the leftists were taped by TV and radio reporters. AP, CBS, NBC, Czech TV, local Fox 5 news, and local radio stations WTOP and WMAL were among those interviewing us. Watch your media for reports.

The CBS radio report had a story about the demontration highlighting a father and mother complaining about their son being sent to Iraq. It simply noted that a "handful of pro-war demonstrations" were at the edge of the rally.

Kristinn was his usual calm self when being interviewed. I voiced my great anger and disgust at the leftists demonstrating at a hospital with war wounded. Hope I didn't rant too harshly.

tgslT gave numerous interviews, but had an incident (nothing too serious) with a leftist. I'll let her describe it, but add my comments after hers.

The point that we kept emphasizing was that the anti-war groups are cynically using war dead and wounded to advance their propaganda.

Leftists are reassembling at White House in a couple hours. Some are walking the 6 miles to the White House in a "funeral march".

The FReep will be continued at the White House. More will be added later.

Thank you Kristinn, tgslTakoma, and BillF. The three of you have millions of voices behind you.

These bussed in professional protesters have hit a new low by having speeches in a quiet zone. Of course, you won't hear that from the media.

A gathering of eagles indeed! You guys are my heroes (and heroine!) and I've got to say I want nothing more right now than to be with you as you stand at the White House. God Bless you all, be safe, and FREEP ON, FIERCE TRIBE!!

I wish I had the guts to stand up and face the cameras like you do...I would have 10 yrs ago when I had more Oommph... My biggest thrill was being interviewed on the local radio about an event I was sponsoring....it was a controversial subject..later I had teachers saying to me, I would have never had the guts to do that. It wasn't about braveness IMHO..it was about saving our school district from criminal behaviour in the schools..

God bless you!

CNN REPORTS:

Iraq war opponents march to White House
Monday, March 15, 2004 Posted: 1:38 PM EST (1838 GMT)

Dozens of people marched Monday in Washington to protest U.S. military action in Iraq.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- More than 60 people gathered Monday in Washington for a march to the White House, calling for an end to U.S. military action in Iraq.

The protest, the second day of a two-day demonstration against the Bush administration, drew mostly peace activists, along with a few relatives of U.S. troops, organizers said.

Relatives of U.S. troops killed in Iraq gathered Monday outside Walter Reed Army Medical Center for an emotional protest.

The protesters are marching from the hospital, where many wounded troops are treated, to Lafayette Park across Washington's Pennsylvania Avenue from the White House -- a nearly six-mile trek.

There were also a few counterprotesters calling the demonstrators "traitors" and yelling, "Stop the left-wing violence."

On Sunday, several hundred protesters took part in a march from Dover, Delaware, to nearby Dover Air Force Base, where remains of U.S. troops first arrive from Iraq. The facility includes the U.S. military's main mortuary.

Some protesters complained about the Bush administration's policy of refusing the news media access to Dover, saying the White House is trying to hide the horrors of the war.

"I'm just trying to get the message out that I think this war is unnecessary from the start," said John Walker of Germantown, Maryland, whose younger brother, Army Sgt. Jeffrey Walker, 33, was killed in a helicopter crash near Fallujah on January 8.

Jeanine Walker of Germantown, Maryland, whose brother-in-law Jeffrey Walker died in Iraq, took park in Monday's protest.
"I don't want anybody else like myself who has lost a family member to have to go through this. ... I loved him very much. It's really difficult," he said.

Standing outside the hospital as the march got under way Monday, Walker said the protesters have nothing but support for the troops who are still in Iraq."We'd like for them all to come back safely."

Organizers of the anti-war march told CNN that, in addition to calling for an end to U.S. military efforts in Iraq, they wanted to honor the dead and bring attention to the plight of the nearly 2,800 wounded in action.

More than 400 other U.S. soldiers were wounded in non-hostile incidents, according to the Defense Department.

Bill you guys are the greatest. I don't know if FReepers who've never been out there in the streets with these thugs really appreciate what it takes to stand up to them and keep your cool.

Thanks for standing up for our troops!

Just want to say that I saw you folks this morning on C-SPAN2, wonderful job by each one of you!

As for that anti-war protest, I thought that was dispicable what they did at the Dover AFB.

A passersby (L) argues with Iraqi war supporters near the White House in Washington, March 15, 2004. The war against Iraq was the right action to take because Saddam Hussein posed an 'urgent' threat, U.S. officials said on Sunday, as they defended the U.S.-led invasion on its first anniversary. The Bush administration, a year after the March U.S.-led invasion, is dogged by questions of whether it exaggerated the threat from Iraq to gather support for the war, as no stockpiles of biological or chemical weapons have been found. Here is my initial after-action report from a fabulous FReep of the leftists at Lafayette Park, across from the White House.

Honor roll for the afternoon gathering of eagles: Angelwood, tgslTakoma, Kristinn, and BillF.

We first set up across a street from Layayette Park and waited for the leftists' march. When they came into the park along a route a block away, we crossed the street.

We asked a U.S. Park Police officer at the edge of the park where we could conduct our counterprotest. Even though the leftists' permit was for a small part of the park, the officer said that we had to stay at the very edge of the park, at least 300 or 400 feet from the assembly of about 200 leftists.

Several of us were interviewed by various media. Many of the late-arriving leftists walked by us and we expressed strong condemnation of their cynical use of war dead and wounded to advance their radical agenda.

The leftists were sufficiently far away that it was hard to hear them at times. However, we did hear portions when they read the names of U.S. troops who died from the Iraq War. Not to honor them, but instead it was a ghoulish, propaganda use of those who made the ultimate sacrifice to liberate Iraq and defend America.

Leftists also read names of some Iraqis, supposedly civilians killed by the U.S. As the speaker read one Iraqi name, he said that the name represented 200 dead Iraqi civilians.

The highlight for me was when Medea Benjamin, leader of Code Pink, arrived very late and walked about 25 feet from us. I just happened to see her as I turned to my side.

At the top of my lungs I chanted:
MEDEA BENJAMIN YOU CAN'T HIDE,
YOU SUPPORTED SADDAM'S GENOCIDE

SHAME, SHAME, SHAME ON YOU
USING WAR DEAD AND WOUNDED FOR PROPAGANDA.

Angelwood and tgslTakoma added their own shouts as Medea, who turned to look at us, nervously smiled and waved from about 60 feet. (Unfortunately, Kristinn had to go back to work a couple minutes before Medea arrived.)

tgslTakoma repeated the brilliant question that Doctor Raoul asked strongly pro-Castro Medea yesterday: "Are you a peace activist or are you a revolutionary?" (See this thread for Raoul's one man FReep of Medea on Sunday.)

(When the leftists had gathered outside Walter Reed Hospital this morning, one leftist woman told me that Medea was in New York. We wondered if she was just hiding somewhere.)

After Medea had passed by, tgslTakoma turned on her megaphone. A Park Police officer told tgslTakoma that she could not use her megaphone because "shouting things that make them mad is against the law as inciting a riot" (my paraphrase). She turned it off.

The officer's explanation was absurd, but the leftists had a permit. It is correct to say that we don't have the right to block their freedom of speech (nor would we want to), but we were so far away that it was NOT reasonable to believe that our expressions of disapproval would be any more than a minor annoyance. At most, failure to comply with the officer might have been "disturbing the peace," not any incitement to riot.

We had numerous verbal matches. One of the most amusing was a guy who said he was a slave because he had to work to get food, shelter and clothing. This guy, who happened to be white, said he would post a definition of facism on FR.

The leftists marched out of Lafayette Park. We packed up and left.

Walking back to my car alone, I ended up across 17th Street from about 200 leftists. They had relocated to the side of the White House, apparently trying to get the WH guards to accept mock caskets with names of dead.

When the leftists stopped chanting momentarily, I boomed out:
SADDAM NEEDS A HUG
SADDAM NEEDS A HUG

SHAME, SHAME ON YOU
USING DEAD AND WOUNDED FOR PROPAGANDA

The two hundred, now stunned and unhappy leftists just looked across the street at me. I laughed and walked back to my car just before the parking meter expired.

I'll take the liberty to incorporate tgslTakoma's post-morning FReep comments from the pre-FReep thread as follows:

I'm back home for a quick bite to eat, and then I'm off to stand against them at Lafayette Park. Kristinn, me and BillF stood on Georgia Avenue, first at the entrance to Walter Reed - across the driveway from a clutch of leftist-supporters wearing black and flaunting black wreaths.

And of course, the media was out there in droves, to cover the leftist blood dance.

The leftist photo-op was being set up halfway down the block - they set up a podium with amplified sound, in a hospital zone where our soldiers are trying to heal wounds.

The three of us walked silently down the sidewalk to the back of their gathering, and then we stood away from them, in the street between parked cars, and we held our signs in silent witness to their exploitation of our wounded and dead soldiers.

Kristinn's two-sided sign sign read: s1) Leave Our Wounded Alone, and s2) God Bless Our Troops

My two-sided sign read: s1) Leftists Exploit Military K.I.A. For Blood Dance, and s2) U.S. Troops -Mission IS Just & Good. God Bless Them.

BillF had several signs, but he'll have to tell you what they said, as I was preoccupied by the activities swirling around us.

I did have one self-described socialist peace protester who kept stalking me, trying to make me listen to his rant. I finally picked up my things and tried to walk away from him and he blocked my way, shoving me repeatedly. I tried to turn right and he pushed his guitar case into me, again blocking me. I turned the other way (towards the street) and he pushed into me again, placing his hands on me and shoving me backwards into traffic. I raised my voice very loud and called out for him to stop shoving me and to let me pass. Camera crews swarmed over to where we were and he continued to bodily block my passage down the street and shoved me several more times, with cameras rolling. It will be interesting to see if any of that makes it to broadcast.

I'll post more later but right now I have to inhale a sandwich and hit the road for round two, with Angelwood, BillF and Kristinn (if he can get away from work again).

Wish us well fellas (and pray that there is no more left-wing violence and intimidation).

======= END QUOTED POST OF TGSL ABOUT THE MORNING FREEP

I was partially blocked from seeing the leftist shoving tgslT, but heard her shouting at him to back off. I moved closer to her and saw that the leftist was bumping into her and blocking her way. I lowered my shoulder into this guy's chest and slightly pushed this guy away from tgslT, shouting at him to "stop pushing her," as a dozen cameras moved to record the incident.

Other leftists came and got the guy to back off as I shouted "STOP THE LEFT WING VIOLENCE!" (Credit Doctor Raoul for the slogan.)

I heard me shouting the slogan on one radio station when driving home from the morning FReep.

After the incident with guitar-case guy pushing tgslT, another leftist came over and touched my arm. I shouted at him to stop touching and back off. He did as cameras whirled.

Precisely to avoid such incidents (minor as they were this time), DC Chapter members always try to maintain a good separation distance of 5 or 10 feet when arguing. We make it a point to not invade someone's personal space, but the leftists are sometimes not as well-behaved.

At the morning FReep, one of the hard core leftists was a twenty-something guy who looked like Abbie Hoffman, way back when. I kept expecting him to push his bike into us or do something similar. Fortunately, he just spouted ultra-left wing "Black Helicopter" theories.

My VCRs are running and I think I have a taped radio report on the protest with some mention of our FReep.

Local all news station WTOP ran some comments by Kristinn, but I just heard a few words at the end.

At another time, WTOP discussed the left's Walter Reed protest and said that 3 members of Free Republic counter-protested them. The announcer correctly described us as claiming that "it is disrespectful of them [i.e., left] to exploit wounded and dead for political purposes."

At least 2 outlets actually ran our message. Others ignored it and just reported on the leftists. It will take a while to check out some other outlets.

Thanks for your kind words. It's the least I can do to support our brave troops.

A comment/question that I kept asking both leftists and news media. "Have you ever been to a protest at a hospital before? What's next, a demonstration at Arlington National Cemetary? This is outrageous!"
