Clinton Comes Out Swinging for Kerry

Former President Bill Clinton is spearheading a drive to raise $10 million in 10 days for Sen. John Kerry's presidential bid, with a new letter urging Democrats to bankroll Kerry's defense against "the Republican attack machine."

"Republicans have gone negative with the first of what will certainly be a barrage of attack ads," warned the master of damage control politics.

"In 2004, we're not going to yield an inch to the Republican attack machine when it comes to defining what this campaign is all about," Clinton pledged.

He urged Democratic donors to "give John Kerry the kind of immediate, dramatic support he needs to stand toe-to-toe with the President and force him to debate the real issues in this campaign," then urged, "Let's send donations flooding into Kerry headquarters."

The Clinton missive represents a major breakthrough for the Massachusetts Democrat. Not only is it the first concrete indication that the former president and his wife Hillary are firmly behind him, but it signals the support of important Clinton allies like Harold Ickes, who controls the Democratic Party's presidential Media Fund.

Speculation of a rift swirled two weeks ago when Sen. Clinton offered a less than enthusiastic endorsement for Kerry in a venue where few Americans were likely to notice - during an interview on Japanese TV. Before last weekend, the former first couple had little else to say about Kerry locking up the presidential nomination.

But Mrs. Clinton signaled a change of heart on Sunday, telling an audience in Boston that she agreed with Kerry's description of Republicans as "the most crooked, you know, lying group I have ever seen" and warning that the same "vast right wing" conspiracy" that impeached her husband now has Kerry in its crosshairs.

Beware of an embrace from the Clintons. When they're smiling at you and agreeing with you and helping you, when you're not looking, they twist the knife in your back and walk away and watch you bleed slowly to death. That's their M.0. Kerry is going to be politically butchered by Billary. This is simply Act I of that drama.

A Clinton endorsement might be enough for Kerry to reassess his life insurance options...

"Republican attack machine"

The Bush team really needs to come up with a commercial that has all the clips of the Democratic Dwarves slinging all sortsa mud at GW.

"C'mon Mr. Kerry, you obviously can DISH IT out, but can you TAKE IT?"

The diapered Junior Senator is doomed now for sure.

Let us all jump down on our knobby knees and thank G_d profusely that we are not the befuddled Democratic nominee.

This may be a kiss of death for Ketchup Kerry, but what if it works as well as it could? What happens if Kerry really does implode the way we think? You know this is a set up for Billery to jump in and save the sinking ship. This terrifies me. How many days does it have to be before the election before the Dems CAN NOT substitute a candidate. Can it happen after the Dem nomination is sewed up? I mean, what happens if he steps down two months before the General election?
