Bake Sale a Success

Posted on 03/19/2004 11:09:04 PM PST by Raymann

Well we had our bake sale today and I'm happy to say it was a success. Our stand was right were most students passed by to go to eat so many of the students here (Univ. of Rochester) were exposed to out message. I'm also happy to say there was no violence and we were not threatened in any way, in fact my throat is hoarse now from all the debate we had.

We where there for about four and a half hours but we didn't make much money but of course that really wasn't the point (as far was I seen all the students who bought cookies were white and we had one Asian, in fact one woman came up and said she was half white and Asian so we split the cost). Now security was on us within 15 minutes and asked us to move but we had a permit so they backed off. Then for the next 2 hours or so there were some from the administration floating around suspiciously but they didn't give us any trouble, in fact after that security came back and said "we're here to protect your freedom of speech so call us if you need any help." At first I thought that was pretty big of them and I really don't have any reason to doubt it but I suspect they were waiting to see if anything would happen and when nothing did they jumped in and supported us. I think if something did happen they would have jumped in and claimed they were keeping an eye on the situation the whole time, but again thats just my suspicion.

Anyway virtually the whole of the College Republicans showed up and and at any given moment there were about 10 to 15 of us there, I of course stayed the whole time. For a while there was also a fellow freeper there who works with the schools rather prestigious med center and he gave his support. Other then that we had no support from the faculty and not that were expecting any but that is a disappointment, whenever the grassroots or "social justice" organizations have a demonstration some professors are always there.

Lastly, we're going to talk about it more at the next meeting but with the success today I think we're going to set up a table every month on Friday's on various issues like global warming, etc. The student reactions today really prove to me just how interested students here are with some controversial and how many of them are receptive to our ideas. Even the ones who disagreed with us usually just engaged us in some good debate (I used to be a debater for 5 years, they didn't stand a chance). And its exactly that kind of response we were going after and like I said earlier we were successful.

If anything else happens later though, I'll keep ya'll informed.

Congrats on the success... I like the bake sales even though I'd probably have to pay 3.00 for a cookie *LOL*

Congratulations! I am glad it was successful and there was no trouble.

I am glad you all had the courage to do it.

Good luck on your future ones.

This is really sad. You would think that a Political Science Prof, even if he did not share your views would be there to support your efforts to enter the political sphere and expand the political horizons of the student body.

I for one support your efforts and wish you well. But then I support your political view.

I am not the least bit surprised none of the faculty showed up. If any one did, they would be ostracized from then on. However, it is very unlikely that there are any that would have attended even if this were not the case. It is the sad state of our educational system that continues to employee those who share a certain liberal world view.

I do give a whole lot of credit to those who had the bake sale. It truly is a courageous action in the midst of the enemy.

Could you provide some background on this? It seems to be one of those affirmative action bake sales, is that right?

What were your prices?
What kinds of reactions did you get and which were the best?
What kinds of cookies did you have?
Did you have trouble getting the permit and did you tell them the type of bake sale, and did you say it was non-profit?

thanks

Well thanks for all the support. First of all, what does BTTT bump mean, I have no clue.

About the bake sale, the prices were:

1. Asian Males - $1.75
2. Asian Females - $1.50
3. White Males - $1.25
4. White Females - $1.00
5. Black/Hispanic Males - $.75
6. Black/Hispanic Females - $.50
7. American Indian - $.25

We didn't care much about getting it exactly right as long as out point was made. The University demanded we sell prepackaged food so we basically bought some rice krispies treats, oreo's, moon pie's, etc. About the response read my first post, like I said there, it was good.

BTTT puts your thread at the top of the news/activism thread so people can't miss it

BTTT means the thread is moved to the top of the lastest posts page so others might be interested in reading it. Here's a CR thread about a previous bake sale which I thought was a great report. You mentioned you debated for 5 years, what were the debates like? Did you win anyone over? Pictures are always nice if you have access to that as well.

Well done. If your university is anything like where I went, most professors are very liberal, and generally clueless about real-world issues (keep in mind my dad was a university professor). Using logic to illustrate the idiocy of political policies offends them because they can't (or won't) understand it.
