The once-majority Serb population of Serbian Kosovo at one time was addicted to cheap Albanian labor, and turned a blind eye to an illegal alien invasion.

Look where that got them.

America is defacto bilingual.

Many retail jobs on the I10 Corridor, and in places like Dallas go to the person with both English and Spanish skills.

Nothing wrong with speaking languages, but when the USG panders by offering forms and drivers tests in languages other than English, it's just plain stupid.

And bilingual education lobby still has clout.

I plan on learning Spanish immediately. How do you say "Put your hands on top of you head" or "Don't move, lie down on the ground or I'll shoot"?

They don't HAVE to learn the language. We will be forced by the multi-cultural forces in our society (hand-wringing surrender-monkeys) to adapt or die out. The amazing thing to me is that the idiots who propose accepting this flood of illegals with open arms shout RACISM at the top of their lungs actually hate their own race. Many of the "Hispanics" are caucasians themselves.

Nowhere in the Constitution is English mandated. Am I wrong about that? If not, what b.s. masquerading as patriotism is driving English-only?

Imho, the best thing America can do for itself is to normalize the border situation with Mexico. The problem is not only that illegal immigration is occurring, but that investment by U.S. companies and ordinary U.S. citizens is not occurring, due to the legal and political climate there. We need to work toward a situation where there can be a truly open border, with movement of people subject to visa restrictions so long as there is strong economic pressure to leave Mexico. Eventually, the economy of Mexico will stabilize and it would become practical to relax controls over the movement of people.

For now, I'd ask Americans of all political persuasions to see beyond the flood of immigrants, to the opportunity for a larger political/economic union, taking into account both the U.S. and the countries to the south. If done in a careful way, this would create a country with more growth potential than the present U.S.

The proposal, in short, is for the U.S. to grow by deliberate accretion, as it did in the last century, and to include more countries of the North/Western Hemisphere.

It's time to see that our future lies in building economic and cultural bonds with people who can help us grow.

We only became the richest country in the world and it was without speaking lots of languages. What multi-cultural or multi-lingual country ever made it to the top? Belgium? India? India is gaining fast now --- but that's only because they speak English instead of those thousands of dialects which divided them.

, the economy of Mexico will stabilize

Mexico is already a very wealthy country but all the wealth is held by a few corrupt oligarchs who should be run out of power so that changes can be made to allow for a middle class to develop. Millions of people don't flee their homelands when conditions are improving and hope is staying. As it is now, thousands are dying trying to leave that corrupt hellhole and crime is skyrocketing out of control. Just look at the growing numbers of abandoned street children in Mexico City ---- hundreds of thousands of them --- the future of that country is not pretty.

It's interesting --- the most bilingual area of the USA is the most impoverished. Some good it's doing.

The U.S. and Mexico need to work out an arrangement where the movement of people and capital and normalize. That may take time; may take political changes on both sides.

We are not free from sin over here. Our financial system is based on the creation of a fraudulent, fiat currency (counterfeiting at the federal level). If other countries seek to isolate themselves economically from us, it is partly because of that.

The Constitution is WRITTEN in English, not Spanish. So is the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation and every other document of our founding. That's because we were, in large part, founded by English aristocrats. English has always been one of our strengths as a nation, one language. Losing that would be a shame.

Your ideas are interesting. How about Baja Norte and Sur and the next two American states. They could hold referendums down there, vote and petition the Congress for statehood, just like most other states did at some point. Then our Congress critters could decide.

Why do you consider a fiat currency fraudulent. It seems to work fine for me. I work, get paid in it, and then turn around and use it to buy new shoes and stuff. Even gold, when I want to.

I hope you'll forgive a personal question. Are you from Texas?

I have heard that there is a huge difference in the way people perceive the immigration problem in Texas and elsewhere. I'm in California, and to put it mildly, I disagree with you. On the other hand, I've heard enough Texans who don't seem to think it's that big a problem to wonder what I'm missing.

  Thanks for any answers,

Drew Garrett

CW2 Ping.

If you'd love to live in a charming place like Bosnia or Kosovo, just stick around the American Southwest for a few more decades.

Worst places to be as it develops:

El Paso, Denver, Phoenix, Tucson, Albuquerque, Carlsbad, Las Cruces, Yuma, and anywhere in California, especially south of SF/Oakland.

Best place to be: anywhere in Texas, other than right on the line.

Nor, for that matter, is Finnish mandated in the constitution. Accordingly, I have just as much right as Spanish-speaking citizens of Mexico do to demand that Finnish be the official U.S. language as well, or instead. Of course, many of them vote in US elections as directed by the Mexico City government, so that may not remain the case much longer.

For now, such demands can be ignored. But someday, the sons of Finland will arise and demand our natural homeland in this country be restored to our independent control! Long live Suomi-Amerika; Kollaa Kestää! Haaka Paale!.

My wife feels the same way. And she's of Mexican ancestry (but with a good amount of Chiricahua Apache thrown in, and they didn't think much of Mexican invasions either).

You oughta hear some of the things the Mexis say about the Raramuri Tarahumara....
